I love the finale of episode 1. The sense of scale that we get from the "Silver Giant" smashing the small Space Beast in one punch is excellently rendered. The suitmation, the compositing, the CGI all come together very nicely.
Speaking of the CGI, it's passable, but not great. About as expected for the timeframe. I do like that they are using the CGI only for things not really feasible with physical effects. The full scale suit introduced in episode 2 is wonderfully weird, filled with tons of great little details. Komon is an interesting take in that he is the newbie outsider to TLT and the Night Raiders, and has to learn to be part of the team. Typically in an Ultra show, the hero might be new to the team but is otherwise very competant; seeing Komon learn the ropes is a nice touch. I really appreciated his training sequences in episode 2. TLT and Night Raider are interesting units as well. Obviously they are plays on the old Science Patrol/Ultra Guard/Monster Attack Team archetypes, but I like this spin into the covert ops trappings. Their meka is pretty neat so far, and I like the underwater base (shades of Lightspeed Rescue, oh yeah). So far I am really enjoying this modern spin on the old school Ultra show format. So glad this won the poll, and I hope everyone else is digging it as much as I am.

I cheated a little and got a jump on this week by watching episode 1 yesterday. I really wanted to keep going, but I decided to pace myself.
It's a really good premiere episode - we get some set-up for the world and the heroes, but a lot is still left up in the air and there are some mysteries already working into the plot. I assume we'll get to know the Night Raiders better, as so far the only one we know much about is Jabi. But it's Jabi, and that means she's more awesome than the rest put together anyway. I'm liking the effects so far - the CGI looks much better than anything Rider or Sentai pull off, although I liked the more armored look of the Next suit more than Nexus's obvious fabric costume. Love the helmet, though. The Night Raider's jets look a little too toy-ish for my tastes, though. Two other things that stuck out: 1. Apparently the Moe Howard look is still alive and well in Japan. 2. If your girlfriend keeps drawing pictures of couples, she is trying to drop a hint. Also, Mele is... not in this show. But still hot. |

Up in the morning? Good timing because I just got done watching. First things first, that opening tune is catchy as hell. Now onto the episodes, I really like the mystery factor to this show. I enjoy it when the viewer can be just as lost as a character in the show. Also enjoying that these episodes don't have a flow fomula to them like Super Sentai or Kamen Rider. Big example would be the episode 3 ending on the people being trapped in the tunnel with a bunch of space beasts. As for the space beasts, they are very unique and monsterous in design. Also enjoy it when enigmatic predators learn and become savvy as demonstrated by the giant beast taking hostages to force the Night Raiders to hold their fire. While we haven't seen much combat on screen yet, but it looks we'll start to see more next week.

You're saying that like there's a woman on this show that's hotter than Jabi.
Watched the second episode - will probably save the third for tomorrow, although it's hard to keep pacing myself on this show. It was another really good episode, although it looks like the first three episodes together form our overall introduction to the series. I'm starting to pick up on some of the other Night Raiders, but so far Komon and Jabi are the only ones that are making much of an impact (and yes, I know her name is Nagi on this show, but she will always be Jabi to me). It looks like they're going to be the main two characters anyway, though, as Jabi is the one that keeps noticing Mysterious Ultraman Guy. Definitely interested to see what happens now that Jabi has decided to just indiscriminately attack Nexus. It's Jabi. I don't like his odds. |

I was overall fairly unimpressed with those opening three episodes, if I'm honest. The action sequences were great, Nexus was cool and the Night Raiders were badass but everything else was just kinda bland.
I don't believe that clichéd or generic are negative criticisms in themselves, some writers and directors are just better than others so one can make a great version of the story another can make a terrible version and honestly I felt here like I was watching a SyFy original movie rather than some of the sci-fi greats it was imitating. Even the stuff it did well, like trying to establish a believable world, was rushed to such extremes that it stopped meaning anything. I've never taken part in a Let's Watch before so I wanna stick around but I hope this show gets better.

Nexus 1-3! My thoughts thus far.
1 Dat theme song rocks. The first episode definitely left me with questions. Since we started this whole thing with The Next I'm wondering where/if loose threads from that come into play. Kazuki seems pretty cool and I haven't seen enough of everyone else yet, though choosing someone like him to join the Night Raiders seems like an odd choice based on the information given. It's cool to see the non-ultras be able to put up a reasonable fight on their own, so kudos to the Night Raiders. At the moment I don't have much else to say other Kazuki's "girlfriend" is hot 2 The Raiders certainly have impressive weapons. Definitely cool if a bit ham fisted when on the fly though. Leather jacket/Nexus is intriguing but I need to see more of him to know if I think he's cool cool. Glad to see the monster evolved from that terrible CG though the suit is not impressive. I do like th concept of the beast begining primatively and evolving to fight humans properly though. But I don't understand the point of the vehicles when they don't use them to fight the giant monster.... And this bitch Nagi is already wareing thin on me. Shooting Mexus? Really? The dude who just saved two helpless civillians that you were more than happy to sacrifice? She's going to be one of those characters isn't she? 3 Very cool battle. Just what I've come to expect from Ultraman. Even if the beasts flying form was pretty unconvincing. Still don't like Nagi though, I'm sure her backstory will explain the attitude but I'm not a fan right now. And I was wondering when they'd bring up The Next. I guess they won't since they can apparently mind wipe people at will. I'm sure they'll explain how but it seems a little convenient at the moment. Nexus' host is is still an interesting guy. Aside from Zero I was never aware that the changers used to become an Ultra were weapons as well. But that's more thanks to my limited knowledge.

Enjoyed this more with each subsequent episode. The first felt like a bit of a slog to me but in episode 2 with Komon as a member of the Night Raiders it got more intriguing. I liked the format of the show, it isn't just MOTW but seems to be more continuity-laden.
My one main problem is the Ultraman Nexus suit, which after seeing The Next feels like a few giant steps back. |
