It seems like I have to say this whenever you reply to my posts: stop twisting my words. You do this every time.
I'm in no way implying that their approach here is necessarily a good thing, or the right way to go about things either. I am ONLY arguing against the statement that it's an objectively unrecognizable, loose representation of Power Rangers, and a manipulative cash grab on the same level as Jem and the Holograms. Quote:
If you are really so incapable of understanding the difference between wanting something that respects the source material, and the actual source material, you are not worth talking to. That is just a flat out childish thing to say. That's like saying if they made a Bruce Wayne Batman that was super Bayformer overdetailed and had an organic cowl with no ears or nose and no cape or bat symbol and it had no actual design cues from Batman except the exposed mouth, anyone who complains clearly just wants the Adam West suit. We've done body suited superheroes before, and better. Look at Black Panther. Full bodysuit that isn't spandex. Looks badass. Except, one, they don't look just like the show. They still have the organic, more detailed look, just used effectively and with taste. They even ditch the belts, boots and gloves and just keep the center chest diamond. And second, it's not unoriginal if it's the the same fucking brand. Making Optimus Prime look like Optimus Prime isn't unoriginal. Making Optimus Prime look like Voltron is unoriginal. If your source material is the actual source material, that's not a lack of originality, it's the all too rare philosophy of "make shit look like what it's based on." I'm not a huge fan of the changes, but clearly someone took the time to come up with this so it doesn't look like "kids dressing up in cheap spandex to fight people in rubber monster suits." It's perfectly fine to not like something, but calling it "lazy" or "effortless" or "lacking creativity" is just lazy in itself, really. |

Exactly. It's effort, but completely misguided effort. Kind of like a lot of the problems with, say, Megaforce. There is effort in that series, but in all the wrong places, like making sure they exactly replicated the sets from the Sentai for the new footage... and then doing stupid things like having Pre-Zyu suits with no explanation and ONLY swapping out Akaranger for the MMPR Red, while leaving the rest of the Pre-Zyu suits intact, in the completely NEW footage that they had to film just to do that...
It's not lazy, it's stupid and misguided, and, mark my words, this movie bombs, it'll be due to them wasting their efforts on pointless crap. Although... after the zords, this design isn't so bad. It has all the basic parts it needs to resemble what it's supposed. Is it perfect, or even good... no, but it at least passes muster, IMO. It's butt ugly, but you can at least see where the notes were made. Short, red and has a disk for a head... I'll give it C... minus... but still a pass. Suits>Alpha>Zords, when it comes to looking right. |

Maybe the correct term would be "different" ? Either way, you understood my point. They want to use MMPR as a crutch without actually recreating MMPR. Mocking one's opinion without adding anything to the conversation is always appreciated though

You know what was creative? Those vehicle-like zord concepts that were speculated to transform from practical vehicle modes to animal-like mech modes. That was a great idea, as it kept the giant robot dinosaur concept but put a clever and pragmatic twist on it. And they didn't look like generic TF movie characters, the T-rex at least still evoked the colours and shapes of a blocky, but functional robot so much that despite only ever seeing the vehicle mode, it still clearly felt like it wa sthe T-rex zord. They weren't the best designs ever, but they were a step in the right direction as far as making this film feel distinct. And that's really the crux of it all. Yes, technically the suits don't identically resemble Iron Man in details or aesthetic. However, the fact that everyone keeps comparing them to Iron Man tells us enough. To people, the Power Ranegrs aren't armoured, or covered in lots of little metal spikey details. They're people in bodysuits, and they don't have to be spandex. Marvel, again, has plenty of characters in "tights" that aren't cheap spandex suits. The fact that thay chose a look that feels directly in spite of the original designs is why people don't like them. When they made Man Of Steel, for as much as I dislike that costume, they didn't armour him up and give him a ton of little contrasting colour details in the form of layered pieces of metal. They kept it a bodysuit, added a texture, and added minor details and embelishments here and there. But he still looked like Superman. And that was also an alien costume. |

I'm trying really hard not to have kneejerk reactions to whatever is announced or revealed from the 2017 movie. I even like the suits now and the zords' extra legs for whatever reason they decided to do that. But what am I supposed to do with this? It looks like an anthropomorphic robotic frog. Honestly? I agree about the eye-stalks. If they weren't there I'd like it more. As it is.. Just what the living hell were they thinking?

He kinda looks like a robotic E.T.... The over-all design is nice, but the proportions and bulging eyes definitely hurt the design... a lot. Makes me wish they had gone with that concept art we saw of a tall and skinny Alpha with a small head. The one that kinda looked inspired by "The Day the Earth Stood Still".
For once I'm actually kinda hoping they don't make a toy of Alpha, lol...
