At the risk of overcrowding the forum with retrospective threads, it's time for my annual tradition of looking back on the previous year and the shows, characters, and moments that stood out to us. So, as per usual, I've abused my OCD-level obsession with lists and rankings to compile far more categories than is really needed to look back on (I took the Toku Crush one out, though; partially because some people have found it creepy, but primarily because Yukari Taki wasn't in anything this year).
As always, for releases of this year I'm counting any series that aired any episodes during 2019, including: Lupinranger vs. Patranger Super Sentai Strongest Battle Ryusoulger Kamen Rider Zi-O Kamen Rider Zero-One Ultraman Taiga Power Rangers Whatever The GoBusters Adaptation Is Called, I Legitimately Don't Remember Force And again, for movies I'm counting anything that came out this year as well as anything that came out last year but wasn't available as a dvd/fansub until this year. If you want to include stuff that hasn't been available for viewing outside of Japan yet but you're pretty sure is going to be really, really awesome, go ahead. I remember having a decent amount of fun making one of these and reading them last year, so here's hoping another will prove the same!
Best New Show of 2019 - I'm sure this is going to be the common answer but it's Kamen Rider Zero-One. The show has just completed it's first major arc and I've been totally hooked from the beginning and very cautiously optimistic for it to continue being great. The cautious part comes from me thinking it'd be very easy for it to go off the rails in a way I wouldn't like. Best Movie of 2019 - The only toku movies I recall watching this year was Build New World: Kamen Rider Grease (which was a straightforward and fun action movie which featured a cast I still really like) and much longer ago Heisei Generations Forever? The latter was more bombastic for sure but I don't think I will count it as a 'this year' film, so my answer by default goes to the Grease movie. Best Male Lead Character - Kairi and Keichiro are my two favourite reds ever, in part due to their individual characters and also their up-and-down rivalry and friendship, even if the show itself never dug as deep into them as they could have. Might as well add for Best Female Lead, uh... It's going to be Tsukasa of the Patrangers by default. I like her more than Umika, and other shows female leads are either just okay to me (Asuna) or haven't done enough to leave an impression on me (Yaiba). Best Male and Female Supporting Characters - Izu for the latter, who I only hope has something interesting developments as Zero One goes on! I literally can't think of anyone for male. I was tempted to say Woz but he's just barely too major for me to consider him a supporting character. Best Villain - It could have been Oma Zi-O if the show didn't totally drop the ball on that front. I guess for now I'll go with Horobi and Jin as a unit, who have been equal parts menacing and fun to watch. Yes, metsubojinrai.net in 16 episodes wins out over anyone else to me. Special mention goes to Kreon for usually getting a laugh out of me though. Best Returning Past Character - This is clearly just for the cameos in Zi-O, right? I think it'd be cheating to say Decade since after a point, he was basically a recurring character, so I'm going to say Shouichi's appearance in that show was the best. Best Actor and Actress - I feel bad for not remembering their names, but I really think Kairi's actor from Lupin vs Pat gave the strongest performances I can remember throughout the year. Actress I'd give to... Another Kiva and her manhole obsession. If I'd have to give it to an actual important character, I guess Umika's actress by default. Best Writer and Director - I don't usually follow that kind of information enough to make a decision, but I suppose the only answer that would make sense from me at this time would be Yuya Takahashi because of Zero One so far, even though I know he hasn't done every single episode. Best Suit Design - Zi-O II. Honourable mention to MaxRyusoulRed. Best Weapon/Vehicle/Mecha - Weapon, I'd give to the Zi-O II's Saikyo Grade which combines with his first blade to make that giant broadsword. Mecha I'd give to Mosa Rex who had one of the best debut fight in Sentai ever. Best Fight Scene - I was going to say something from Lupin Vs Pat or Ryusoulger for sure since those shows are both really great and consistent in terms of action. In fact I want to give honourable mention to Ryusoulger's recent Christmas episode and the untransformed fighting going on there! But for a fight that really got me excited, well... I'm going to be predictable and say the parallel fight scenes in episode 2 of Zero One, starting from bike action then moving to Zero One and Vulcan finishing their fights in style. EDIT: I completely forgot to give honourable mention to Yamato taking on three other rangers in Saikyo Battle. Best Dramatic Scene - Geiz's death in Zi-O last episode. I knew it obviously wasn't going to stick, but it still got to me hard! He said Sougo's name!!! Best Comedic Scene - Most of Ryusoulger's christmas episode, or maybe the hammer from the first episode. Biggest "WTF did I just watch?" Moment - Episode 43 of Zi-O when Schartz (I don't remember or care how to spell his name) laid out the entirety of his 'backstory' and 'motivations' within the span of five minutes, and I put quotations on both of those because there's no way either of those were planned from the beginning. Best Song - Next New World from Zi-O is really good... I'm also a big fan of RyusoulGold's thanks to it's triumphant association with Mosa Rex's debut. Has that song been released anywhere yet!? Best Piece of Merchandise - I would objectively say one of the figuarts, but as far as the regular toyline stuff goes, I wanna say the Authorise Buster is both a really nice heavy-duty firearm and a heft battleaxe. Biggest Surprise of 2019 - I'm stumped. It was a pretty surprising year all around, I think. Biggest Disappointment of 2019 - Everything in the final arc of Zi-O, but especially the ending! And yes, 'disappointment' is apt because I actually came to be really invested in the show. The Onari Memorial Award for Single Worst Thing in 2019 Tokusatsu - I guess I can't just say Zi-O's ending a second time, but there really isn't anything else that has really spurred that much negative emotion in me, not Nada's death or anything. Best New Show of 2019: After watching only the first episode, I've very recently picked back up Kamen Rider Zero-One. Thanks to life for causing me to basically skip out on the first arc as it aired, but still, it's solid as hell, and I'm enjoying it.
Best New-to-You Show of 2019: I skipped it's initial airing because I was experiencing a Toku burnout, but after finally buckling down, Kamen Rider Ex-Aid takes the spot. It's a rather wonderful series that I'm both disappointed I didn't watch as it aired, but also probably glad, since my burnout would've probably made me far more negative towards it. That said, I definitely love Ex-Aid! Best Rewatch of 2019: One of my earliest series that I honestly and legitimately forgot 90% of the plot to. Kamen Rider Kabuto. Quality wise, I know it's a nonsensical mess of convoluted bullshit, but it has it's moments and Kagami is so great he's basically the true lead of the series. Best Movie of 2019: Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I don't have much to say about it beyond the fact that it's so nice to see these famous monsters battle it out once again. Godzilla is great and all, but his ensemble cast is what made the franchise timeless. Best Male Lead Character: Thank you, Super Sentai Greatest Battle, for bringing back one of the best leads. Yamato, originally from Zyuohger, but also the lead here. So refreshing to see a hero who's head isn't up his own ass Best Female Lead Character: Tsukasa, from the Patorangers. A competent hero who knew when to pull back and let the assumed to be villains help out. Strong, funny, and just an all around solid character that definitely deserved more focus than she got. Best Male Supporting Character: Another Patoranger character, this time, Hilltop. Just loved the guy, and the Beverly Hills Cop and Robocop references we got out of him were just sublime. Best Female Supporting Character: Hmm, probably Mothra, because goddamn, I love Mothra Best Villain: This one was rather difficult for me, but ultimately, I'll say Wyzul, from Ryusoulger. I love his energy and enthusiasm, and his mix of being a genuine threat as well as being rather comedic is nice, and unlike some villains, his comedic elements don't feel forced or out of place. His antics are just nice. Kreon gets a special mention, too. Best Returning Past Character: MY BEST FRIEND, KAGAMI in Kamen Rider Zi-O. You know you did something right when you brought back 2 of my favorite characters (Blade and Chalice), and yet it was Kagami that won out. Zi-O was a let down for me, but it's Blade and Kabuto tributes were shining beacons for me. Blade's especially as it brought a less bittersweet resolution to it's original ending. Kabuto's, though, was about the same level as letting Asumu transform. Kagami becoming acknowledged by the Kabuto Zector was truly an amazing moment for an amazing, but overlooked, character. (I don't do behind the scenes stuff, so I'm just skipping over the actor/actress/writer/director categories) Best Suit Design: As much as I love Zero-One's simplicity, as well as the creativity from some of the Another Riders in Zi-O, I think I'll have to go with Gaisorg, from Ryusoulger. The Wolzard vibes are strong, and that's not a bad thing. The design is so solid, and evil rangers in dinosaur sentai just tend to do it right. Best Weapon/Vehicle/Mecha: Probably have to be Good Cool Kaiser VSX from Lupinranger vs Patoranger. I legitimately hated this design when first revealed. Just looked absolutely ugly. However, the CG they used to put it in action really helped sway my opinion on it. Additionally, it's sparring use helped keep it from feeling tired (Only 5 appearances, including films). Legit made it's appearances an event, rather than the same old, same old. Best Fight Scene: Lots of options, tons of them. Both franchises have definitely been upping their game when it comes to fight scenes, which is great. I think I'll give it to ToQ 5gou vs Dekamaster, however, in Strongest Battle. I didn't really care about ToQger, but there was something in that fight, from it's theme really shining through, to their dialogue together, that really had a sense of energy that a lot of battles didn't have. Best Dramatic Scene: This year didn't really get emotional on me, but I'd personally have to say Yaguruma losing Kageyama once again. Best Comedic Scene: Ryusoulger, when Kou busted out the mind wiper. Damn, that got a laugh out of me. Biggest "WTF did I just watch?" Moment: It's not from 2019, but it's from a film I watched, that being Zyuohger's summer film. So, Misao hooking up with a rhino girl is definitely that. Best Song: Lupinranger vs Patoranger's theme, er...Lupinranger Vs Patoranger is pretty nice. Best Piece of Merchandise: CSM BLAYBUCKLE WITH BLAYROUSER AND ROUSE ABSORBER. This is my red rider bb gun, as in, I'm never gonna get one...If I'm talking merch that I'll actually own, probably KishiRyuOh 3 Knights. Solid figure. Biggest Surprise of 2019: I'll be real with you, chief. It's Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid being a fairly competent game. Solid fighter with a decent core. If it had more characters at launch, I think it really could've made a name for itself. However, the 3v3 system with only 6 characters? Not a good call, chief. They probably should've had 12 minimum at launch if they wanted to roll with the 3v3 system. Biggest Disappointment of 2019: Lupinranger Vs Patoranger. There was tons of promise from the get go. Lots of original ideas being used that really set up a nice dynamic...Then they just let Lupin hoard the spotlight, refused to give Pat's power up to them, and even had entire episodes with the Patorangers missing entirely. It was a mess, which doesn't surprise me as Sentai tends to be, but it's a mess stemming from something with such promise, which is why I'm so bothered. The Onari Memorial Award for Single Worst Thing in 2019 Tokusatsu: 2019 didn't really have anything offensively bad, really. There were let downs and disappointments, but nothing that really bothered me. So, I'll put Decade's return in Zi-O here. Because damn you, Decade. I hated you in 2009. I hated you on rewatch in 2011. I hated you then, and I still hate you now.

It might be a surprise but Power Rangers features quite heavily this year, I have been generally satisfied with the direction of it since Dino Charge.
Best New Show of 2019: Difficult. I think I'll say Power Rangers Beast Morphers. Ryusoulger is OK but it's a bit too much up-and-down and I'm not too keen on the 6th ranger-related stuff, and Kamen Rider Zero-One again is just too variable in quality to really say I absolutely love it. Best New-to-You Show of 2019:So I recently finished Timeranger a few days ago, and I absolutely loved it! It's very close between that and Time Force, maybe I prefer the ending of Time Force just because it's not as earth-shatteringly sad but yeah. Best Rewatch of 2019:I very rarely rewatch things other than Christmas episodes every Christmas so at one point this year I rewatched Boukenger so that wins by default! Best Movie of 2019:I don't think I've seen any released this year, so I'll have to go with Lupinranger vs Patranger en film from 2018, which I watched this year. Best Male Lead Character:I'm not sure if this includes every transforming hero or just the main character but I think I'll say Keichiro/Patren1go because he did really make me laugh! Best Female Lead Character:I think I'll say Zoey/Beast Morphers Yellow because she has had some kind of cool moments, plus I find her and Roxy both quite attractive! Best Male Supporting Character:I think the uncle from Zi-O, he just really made me laugh with how perplexed he is at everything! Best Female Supporting Character:Tatsui Ui from Ryusoulger, I actually prefer her to Asuna! Best Villain:Maybe the snake thing from Beast Morphers, the guy from Lupin VS Pat who said he wanted to see their identities is close though. Best Returning Past Character:Maybe Shouichi from Agito in Zi-O, that was a well-done tribute and I was pleasantly surprised they actually used music from the show in the final battle scene! Best Actor:Maybe Devon's actor(Beast Morphers Red), he's done a good job so far portraying his development. Best Actress:I think I'll say Izu's actress from Zero-One, it is early in the show but she does fairly well. Can't come up with a best director, best writer, best suit design or best weapon/vehicle /mecha. Best Fight Scene:I think again I'll go for Shouichi's comeback in Zi-O! Best Dramatic Scene:Easy. The Lupinrangers being unmasked. The way it went with the music and everything, just perfect. Best Comedic Scene:Not sure, probably something involving the uncle from Zi-O. Can't think of a Biggest "WTF did I just watch?" Moment though there probably is one. Best Song:Sister MAYO-Que bon! Ryusoulger No Best Piece of Merchandise because I actually don't buy things like that anymore. Biggest Surprise of 2019:Maybe the last few episodes of Zero-One, I've actually been preferring Zero-One to Ryusoulger a few weeks since Nada's death episode. Biggest Disappointment of 2019:I think Nada dying in Ryusoulger. It just struck me as unnecessary. Also the end of Zi-O was a bit weird, I don't know why but the fight didn't seem very engaging. And I won't say a worst thing in Tokusatsu this year because nothing's been particularly bad. |

Best New Show of 2019
This one is actually difficult in 2019. Because I have to choose between Ultraman Taiga and Kamen Rider Zero-One. Ultraman Taiga is another fantastic entry to a franchise that keeps on giving. Zero-One made me excited about Kamen Rider again after being bored for an entire year by Zi-O. In the end I have to give it to Taiga though. Zero-One was entertaining and exciting, but Taiga had episodes which really made me happy. It's hard to explain, but watching Taiga is such a treat, it made me feel great and Zero-One, while being entertaining and overall great, didn't manage that. So yeah, it's Ultraman Taiga! Best New-to-You Show of 2019 I didn't watch anything new this year... that sucks. But I guess Kamen Rider X because I just started watching it? Best Rewatch of 2019 Kamen Rider OOO. It was great rewatching that one, such a good show. Best Movie of 2019 I... haven't watched any I think. But: I'll cheat and mention "Kamen Rider Drive Saga - Kamen Rider Brain" instead. Because it was amazing. A really funny parody of Kamen Rider in a nutshell with a great fighting scene as well. Best Male Lead Character Hidden Aruto. Mostly because he does crazy, weird noises with equally grotesque faces - but I still like him. He's Onari but in a good way. Best Female Lead Character Izu. She's the best. A well written robotic character which is not that easy to do, and she also defined the single best way to deliver new tech to our hero - high-speed charges slowed with braking high-heels, all delivered with the most generic tire-screeching noise ever. Izu rules. Best Male Supporting Character That's difficult because both Homare Souya from Taiga and Isamu Fuwa from Zero-One are excellent. Fuwa shines to me because of his serious nature and a generally tragic past, but he also can't help but laugh at Aruto's jokes, even though he tries his hardest not to. I think that's such a charming thing to add to this character. But Homare has such a strong character as an alien with a dark past who lives in the closet and is afraid to tell his human friends about his true self in fear of rejection. And I think I'll give it to Homare, because while Fuwa is great there's nothing that sticks out t me yet. He's good, but not great. Homare on the other hand had a number of fantastic episodes dedicated to him. They even had a great follow-up to his coming out where he meets aliens which still live in hiding and are fed up with the humans, they really went up and beyond with this character. Best Female Supporting Character I want to say Yua Yaiba because starting Reiwa with a female Rider early on is awesome, but sadly the competition is too overwhelming. Both Pirika and Kana from Ultraman Taiga are great. And I think I'll give it to Kana, because I rarely see seasoned female police officers in Tokusatsu, and her character as a motherly figure with a traumatic experience who works on trying to prevent further occurrences of such an event is fantastic. Hell, this woman opened up her own private security organization because the helplessness of having to go alongside official protocol had her sacrificing an innocent life. That's deep. Best Villain Oh boy. Whoever else tries to compete, you ain't got shit on Tregear. This guy effectively works on making freakin' Evolto look tame. He's, for the lack of a better term, absolutely nuts. I could go into detail but just watch Ultraman Taiga, if not for a fantastic Tokusatsu show, then for one of the most devilishly evil villains ever. Just to give you a taste: The show starts with him killing the protagonists while kicking the butts of the entire New Generation Ultraman hero lineup. No joke. Best Returning Past Character If nothing else Zi-O had some great tribute episodes. And I think the very best returning character in one such episode was Shouichi Tsugami. Like, there were lots and lots of great returning characters, but seeing the real Kamen Rider Agito again was so good. The character was acted out perfectly, and when he transformed on-screen with the original background music playing along - that felt great. It took me back to watching Agito for the first time and I cannot imagine how great it must've felt for someone who watched Agito when it first aired. Best Actor Yeah that's Fumiya Takahashi. The whole energy necessary to portray Aruto's crazy jokes is insane, plus, he made it possible to have a character with such a crazy quirk that is still believable in tragic and serious moments. It not only takes good writing but a great actor like him to make this work. Best Actress Noa Tsurushima, no contest. Her role as Izu is as hard, if not harder, than Takahashi's, because she needs to have a straight face at all points. I have seen background material were she cracks and laughs up instantly when Takahashi does random shit; just imagine how much composure and discipline it takes to not laugh at the insane stuff that's going on in front of the camera. It's also not easy at all to portray a robot without falling into tropes or being just another forgettable performance. I also quite like how well she can portray the instances where Izu shows signs of sentience, it's subtle but noticeable in a good way. Best Writer The guy(s) behind Ultraman Taiga. Sorry, I still suck at names when it comes to the production teams. Best Director The Taiga person. Beautiful scenery shots, amazing usage of miniature angles (there are some crazy good shots from within miniature buildings in Taiga its insane) and overall a great usage of camera work. Best Suit Design That goes to Zero-One no doubt. The suits in that show are drop-dead gorgeous. Zero-One himself is such an amazing return to form, finally another grasshopper themed Rider, and he looks amazing. Plus, the Metsubojinrai.net Rider suits? Wow, just wow. So good. Best Weapon/Vehicle/Mecha Ultraman Titas' body is the single best weapon one could conceive. ... Just kidding, I mean it's true, but I'll nominate an actual weapon instead: I was quite surprised to see the distaste for the Attache Calibur. I love it. Not only does its gimmick of being a briefcase that transforms fit perfectly with its corresponding Rider, but it also looks great as a sword IMO. I love the overall shape of it and it works well as a weapon, it's not too toy-etic for it to look silly. Best Fight Scene That's another hard choice because both Zero-One and Ultraman Taiga have some awesome stuff going on. Taiga had a fantastic night fight scene with some gorgeous miniature work. But Zero-One... the first fight-scene alone was cool. The CGI was a bit distracting but still very nice. The second episode has everything one could ask for though. Two Riders fight with different styles and in different environments, there's a very cool bike scene involved which sadly become rarer and rarer as time goes one, and they both end up at the same locations meeting each other for the first time in their transformed states. This one wins it for me. Best Dramatic Scene Man, the clash between Zero-One and Taiga does not stop. Zero-One had great dramatic scenes, but Taiga wins it because of one thing I haven't even touched upon yet: Ultraman Taiga features audio dramas alongside its main episodes. And the stuff that goes on in there is legitimately heart wrenching. The show itself doesn't hold back either, the episode were Taiga is tainted by Tregear and all of his friends work to rescue him is great as well. Best Comedic Scene Hear me out, this is the one category were Zi-O will win something. Yes, Kamen Rider Brain was hilarious, but Uncle Junichiro was perfect. The scene where he just fixed a radio and they announce that a meteor will smash Tokyo made me laugh so hard. Plus, seeing him riding the Den-Liner was so adorable. Biggest "WTF did I just watch?" Moment There's so much crazy stuff , but I think the scene from LuPat were they imagine eating so much they'll get fat and then a hummingbird or whatever uses its beak to pop them? It was weird. Best Song The ED theme from Ultraman Taiga. There were a lot of great songs in recent Toku, all opening themes ruled (even Zi-O's) but the one song I couldn't get out of my head was the ending song from Taiga. It's so beautiful and complements every episode so well. It's the one theme I never, not even once, skipped. I sat through it every time and enjoyed it every time. What's so great is that along the song plays a recap of the episode you just watched, it's a great way to say goodbye and relive it once again in quick succession. It's too bad they changed the ending theme, I miss it. Best Piece of Merchandise You know what, no Figuarts from me this year, I bought most the DX-releases of Kamen Rider Zero-One this year and I love them. The Hiden Zero-One Driver is a fantastic belt and the Progrise Keys are great trinkets. Biggest Surprise of 2019 Kamen Rider Brain being a thing and being stupid awesome as well. Biggest Disappointment of 2019: Zi-O as a whole. Some tribute episodes were amazing which is all an anniversary show needs really, but everything else was so lackluster. The characters were bad, the story behind it all was bad, most suits were terrible and I'm just glad it’s over. The Onari Memorial Award for Single Worst Thing in 2019 Tokusatsu: Zi-O Trinity. An absolutely hideous, god-awful suit with a gimmick that makes no sense whatsoever. |

What I know about Ultraman could be written on a piece of confetti, I might watch Cosmos at some point though! Also that moment with the woodpecker bursting the guy's stomach probably is my WTF moment of the year actually if it was in 2019!

Best New Show of 2019
Yeah, gonna go with Zero-One as well. Very strong start; it's nailed the pacing; and it really gets how to do character-of-the-week within a heavily serialised format. It unfortunately doesn't handle the massive deluge of new toys to sell, but at this point no series could. Aside from that and Shining Hopper being a categorically awful design, Zero-One's just been killing it so far. Best New-to-You Show of 2019 Not too long ago I would have struggled with this because I watched a fair few good things this year... but I also watched Kuuga. Which managed to break its way into my Top 3 Riders because of how different it is yet how well it nails what Kamen Rider is all about. Goddamn, it made me cry during the last credits sequence. Absolute cracker. Best Rewatch of 2019 Heisei vs. Showa. I made this part of my Faiz watch and I wasn't expecting to like it given my awful memories, but there's a surprising amount to love here. The core emotional story of a dead kid wanting to say goodbye to his parents and the drama that results for that is extremely mature even for this series and it nails it so well. The Faiz and X stuff is in my opinion the best Faiz thing there's ever been (except the HBV, of course) and is so good I wish it got its own movie. Tsukasa is always a complete joy to watch, but he might just be at his best in this movie as he eats an ice cream of his own face and swagger-walks into a bunch of projectiles. The ending fight is stupid, pointless and ruins what could have been a wonderful ending and is really why I think we look back at this movie badly; it was truly awful and regressive. Otherwise there's so much in this movie to like I think I will actually call it the best SHT from now on. Really good stuff. Best Movie of 2019 This is a tricky one. Due to the situation we're in with DVD releases all the movies we got this year were ones from last year, and all the ones that came out this year aren't out except Grease; which I also haven't seen. Just gonna say Heisei Generations Forever. Just a huge amount of fun. Best Male Lead Character AND THAT'S A SHOW... BY ARUTO!!!! My other picks are Sougo and the Sentai guys who aren't terribly inspiring, but that doesn't mean Aruto's just winning by default. If anything he's done a really good job at setting himself apart, and the bad jokes are a really fun indulgence for me. Super interested to see where this dude goes! Best Female Lead Character Does Asuna count? If not I'll pick Izu; but I've really liked Asuna's energy and what she brings to the team. I'm frustrated she hasn't gotten much in the way of development but she's just a fun, quirky, food-gobbling strongwoman and I'm here for that! Best Male Supporting Character We've been spoiled on secondary riders this year, so can I just say all of those? Geiz, Woz and Fuwa all have so much going for them -- our actual secondaries here have a real chip on their shoulder with the main rider which makes seeing their developing friendships really entertaining, and Woz is just a complete treat. Really liked all these boys! Best Female Supporting Character Alright, I admit we haven't seen that much of her; but I'm digging Yua Yaiba right now. Maybe I'm just caught up in the whole "finally a main rider who's actually a girl", but she's showing a lot of promise and I like her struggle between being loyal to Zaia and being the good person she clearly actually is. Stuff like going out of her way to protect kids in the school episode stand out to me as little details I really like; I'm excited to see her become a true Kamen Rider. Best Villain Ryusoulger's sort of been knocking this category out the park. Kreon is a terrible little bastard and I love him; Wyzul is extremely entertaining and energetic; and then Pricious comes in to be one of the coolest (probably final) villains I've ever seen. Thank god I don't have to pick something like Schwartz for this; Ryusoulger knows what it's doing! Best Returning Past Character Is there any question of it being Tsukasa Kadoya? This role's just perfected at this point and it's always a joy to see him swagger in, fuck things up and steal croissants in the background. What an absolute character. Best Actor Keisuke Watanabe -- ie Kamen Rider Woz. His performance and energy is one I can't forget any time soon; from his facial expressions to his body language to his pronunciations... it's just something so his own. And this is apparently his first non-stage role? Bloody hell he owned this. Best Actress Noa Tsurushima, ie Izu. She nails Izu's role completely with all her little quirks and mannerisms and warmed me up to the character so easily! Best Writer Oh hey, the Ex-Aid dude came back to write Zero-One! Awesome! I'm picking him. Best Director Uhm. Hm. Who directed that first Ryusoulger mech fight? That was really good. Whoever did that Best Suit Design LIGHTNING HORNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Piercing Needle With Incredible Force. Best Weapon/Vehicle/Mecha Hei, SEI! Hei, SEI! Hei, SEI! Hey, Kameeen Riders! ULTIMATE TIME BREAKK!!!!!! Tyramigo was also pretty cool. Best Fight/Dramatic/Comedy/WTF Scene Gonna skip on this one because I'm really bad at picking these specifically. This year was great all around for these! Best Song Zero-One's theme song has 404 Not Found in its lyrics. Winner. Best Piece of Merchandise SHF Build RabbitRabbit! I also got Seihou OOO and by god it was hard to choose between the two, but RabbitRabbit just hits it out the park. Stunning figure. Biggest Surprise of 2019 AQUAAAAAA!! Aqua Aqua Aqua Aqua <3 <3 <3 I can't believe they decided to bring back Michal Minato of all characters but I am so here for it. The best movie rider, and he got an arc in this, and we will definitely not talk about what happened in his last Zi-O scene because he definitely went back home and lived a happy life! Biggest Disappointment of 2019 Yeah, I'm gonna go with Lupinranger vs. Patranger too. Such a cool concept that outside of a few moments, just never realised itself and just fell into the usual Sentai pattern. 'Disappointing' is a perfect way to put it, actually -- I'm not angry about it; I don't even think it's a terrible show; it's just disappointing. The Onari Memorial Award for Single Worst Thing in 2019 Tokusatsu I really don't want to say Zi-O's final stretch... but aaaaagh. The Another Zi-O II stuff was painful and pointless; Grand Zi-O as an awesome powerup got so wasted and shafted; and all the absolute nonsense technobabble about the worlds joining and Decade "only putting half his power in the watch" was just stupid. There were some standout moments for sure -- Tsukasa and Daiki are great as ever; I liked that last scene of Sougo with his uncle; and Oma Zi-O's transformation was a hell of a thing. He punched Dragblacker in the face once and made him fucking explode! DUDE!!!! But all in all, it was a travesty of a finale. I really, really wanted more from it.

Best New Show of 2019
Kamen Rider Zero-One. Great show, great batch of merch, great theme song, and made NEON YELLOW the new hot color to don. Best New-to-You Show of 2019 None. Best Rewatch of 2019 Ultraman Geed. Best Movie of 2019 None. Best Male Lead Character Aruto Hiden. Former failed comedian and current CEO of Hiden Intelligence/Kamen Rider Zero-One. His comedy sucks, but the man has a heart of gold and a heroic spirit like no other. Best Female Lead Character Asuna/Ryusoul Pink. I just love how strong and bubbly she is. Best Male Supporting Character Junichiro Tokiwa. While seemingly clueless for most things he does manage to squeeze in a word of wisdom or two. Best Female Supporting Character Kana Sasaki, the great matriarch of EGIS that we ever need. Best Villain The T-800 of Kamen Rider, Ansatsu-chan/Dodo Magia. Best Returning Past Character Kazuma Kenzaki/Kamen Rider Blade. The king returns! Seriously it was either him or Shoichi/Agito and it was not an easy choice cause both returns were just glorious. Best Actor Keisuke Watanabe as Woz. Just fun to watch. Best Actress Noa Tsurushima as Izu. Not easy portraying a humanoid robot but she is doing great so far. Best Writer Kento Shimoyama for writing the Blade and Agito episodes for Kamen Rider Zi-O. The man deserves a raise or a bonus or something for those episodes. Best Director Ryuichi Ichino. This seems to be his debut as main director and boy did he deliver. Looking forward to his future endeavors. Best Suit Design Ultraman Taiga Tri-Strium. Great tribute to papa Taro while maintaining that Taiga flare. It's not flashy like his GARO form, but that is what I like about it, the designers trimmed away any excessive dead weight while keeping it slighty robust. Best Weapon/Vehicle/Mecha Breaking Mammoth, the next generation Suika Arms. Best Fight Scene Ultraman Taiga episode 16, Ultraman Taiga Tri-Strium's debut battle. Not only did he demonstrate what his new form can be capable of by destroying the kaiju of the week, but gave Tregear a figurative kick to the groins right away pretty much. Best Dramatic Scene Episode 1 of Ryusoulger as a whole. Best Comedic Scene Anytime Kanaro fails at finding a lover. The man is pure comedy GOLD. Biggest "WTF did I just watch?" Moment That one scene at the end of Lupinranger VS Patranger where the people Lupinrangers rescued are scouted as the next Lupinrangers for a brief period to rescue them back. A truly heartwarming and "WTF did I just watch?" moment if there was any. Best Song REAL x EYEZ by J x Takanori Nishikawa Best Piece of Merchandise CSM products. Don't have any but they are getting impressive per each new release. Biggest Surprise of 2019 Jiraiya of Sekai Ninjasen Jiraiya being a LEGIT HEAD NINJA. Biggest Disappointment of 2019 No Narutaki in Zi-O. ONORE DIKEIDOOOOOOOO The Onari Memorial Award for Single Worst Thing in 2019 Tokusatsu No Narutaki in Zi-O. ONORE DIKEIDOOOOOOOO

For the most part, the competition for a lot of these categories is super tight for me this year, so just know ahead of time that if you're surprised I picked something over some other thing, the other thing may very well have been a close second. Or third. Or fourth. You get the idea.
Best New Show of 2019: Tokusatsu GaGaGa, the show so good, I'm snubbing Taiga just so you all know what a mistake you've made by ignoring it. And before someone tries to argue semantics on this one since it's mostly a drama, every episode of this show has legit hero tokusatsu scenes in there somewhere, so it counts! Look, this series aired all the way back in January, and it's been in my mind and in my heart this whole time. It came largely out of nowhere for what turned out to be an extremely memorable, short but sweet run of seven episodes. It took what could've been a very niche, and yet also trite premise, and went above and beyond to tell a heartfelt, thoughtful story about navigating the complex and often scary web that is human socialization. It's a show about being a nerd, but it's also so much more than that, transcending its own concept to create a series so intensely relatable, I maintain you wouldn't even have to be into tokusatsu yourself for it to resonate with you. But everyone here already is, which is all the more reason to go give it at least an episode or two already! Best New-to-You Show of 2019: Madan, freakin' Senki, Ryukendo. I already did a huge post about this one, so I don't have much to say I haven't already, but this show totally rocked my socks off. It's the purified essence of hero tokusatsu, and so much fun I feel happier merely remembering that I watched it, let alone how much fun that part was. Best Rewatch of 2019: Now, given the absurd volume of Rider shows I went back through this year, you might expect me to pick one of those, but there is absolutely no way I can give this to anything other than Lupinranger VS Patranger, the Sentai so nice, I watched it twice. Like, literally as soon as it was over, I started going back through an episode or two a week because I simply refused to accept that it was over. This show has quickly become an all-time favorite for me, and while nothing can ever replace Go-Busters as my favorite Sentai, I think LuPat might actually beat it out in terms of raw entertainment value. The slick action, the punchy dialogue, the developed characters, the atmosphere that is equal parts traditional Sentai goofiness, serious crime drama, and somewhat irreverent comedy, LuPat is a combination of just about everything I could ever want in a show, and that makes it so, so hard to put down. Really hard to put down. Look forward to 2020, when LuPat is also going to be my best rewatch of the year. Look, what can I say, the show's a masterpiece, alright? Bandai had to make that Memorial Set because it killed it so hard. Best Movie of 2019: I'm pretty sure I saw the LuPat movie this year? Which is good, because I can't think of a single other toku flick this year that left me particularly satisfied. Heisei Generations Forever was a little uneven, the Ultraman R/B movie had a bunch of great individual pieces that lacked cohesion, and both of the Build New World movies turned out to be total flatlines, and huge middle fingers to me for ever being invested in Build. I actually just got done watching Grease right before writing this, assuming it'd at least be in the running for this award, so the wound is pretty fresh right now, but you know, fool me twice... Best Male Lead Character: Hiroyuki from Ultraman Taiga. I can't actually articulate this one too well, because on the surface, he's just a blandly nice, heroic dude, but something about the execution just makes him work so well. He plays off the more complex world around him in proper audience surrogate fashion, and as such his eagerness and enthusiasm just kinda rub off on me when I'm watching the show. He also mixes a polite, borderline submissive attitude with unshakable, hotblooded determination whenever there's some good to be done, which is a fun contrast. Best Female Lead Character: Nakamura from Tokusatsu GaGaGa, because I haven't cheated enough yet! In all seriousness though, she's an even better audience surrogate type of lead than Hiroyuki, and being the main character, is kind of the nexus of all the things that made GaGaGa such a winner of a series for me. The kind of worries she has about everything in her life are portrayed in exquisite detail, and one of the things that most impresses me about the whole show, that really speaks to how realistic it can be despite being a feel-good dramedy above all else, is how it's never afraid to show that for how anxious she can get about how other people perceive her, she's often just as guilty of making assumptions about people based on her own limited perspective. It's all very three dimensional, and the kind of thing that made this show stick with me so much. Best Male Supporting Character: Homare from Taiga. What a bro this guy is. Like Kiwami said, he's got a really developed character with being an in-the-closet alien and everything, which all ties into Taiga's great central theme about coexistence and everything and is great, but really? I mostly like him because he beats the crap out of people. Okay, it's like 50/50. Or maybe like 33/33/33, with the other third being all the great focus episodes. The point is, when Homare goes into action hero mode, on top of being plain cool, he exemplifies what I love about the heroes in Taiga, which is just how dang hard working they all are. EGIS makes the A-Team look like chumps. Best Female Supporting Character: Kana from Taiga! Have I mentioned how much I like the EGIS crew yet? Because as the lady who created the whole outfit, it goes without saying she's great too. For the longest time I was totally sure I was going to go with Asahi from R/B again on this one, since she's gone on to even greater heights since last year, but as the last stretch of Taiga went on, it became impossible to come to any other conclusion. Kana is the real hero of the entire series. Yeah, the Ultramen are there saving lives, but Kana is out there turning them around. She's the absolute best boss you could ever ask for, with a shockingly inclusive hiring policy that's maybe not so shocking at all when you realize how bottomless her compassion for her fellow sentient lifeforms runs, be they human, alien, or whatever else. The bit that immediately locked her into my choice for this award was a line from episode 17, which has a plot where she's trying to protect a kind of scummy lowlife alien guy she knows, who has a bad habit of getting caught up with the wrong people, and selling out the right ones for his own benefit. I haven't seen the episode subtitled, so I don't know what Genm Corp did with it, or if either of us is doing justice to how beautifully succinct the original dialogue is, but she tells him "you're part of a bad crowd, but you aren't a bad person". This comes after the part of the episode where this guy screwed everyone over, no less. Taiga was a show all about learning to understand and live in harmony with the people around you, with some surprisingly heavy real world parallels in its depiction of how hopeless life as an alien on Earth could be, and that line from Kana in that episode, just like her entire mission throughout the series, is more reflective than anything else of the kind of message I think Taiga wanted to convey. In a show where massive titans from other worlds combat unimaginable threats with awesome powers to protect the Earth every episode, what ended up being the most inspiring thing to me was that simple human kindness. Best Villain: Tregear from Taiga, just in case it wasn't sweeping these awards hard enough already. After retiring Belial at the end of Geed, Tsuburaya was in the market for a new overarching bad guy Ultraman, and they came up with something special. Tregear turns everything about your everyday main villain totally on its head. Rather than try to make him seem more evil by going bigger, they went the exact opposite direction, creating a villain whose pettiness is matched only by his cunning. Something as simpleminded as taking over the universe would never satisfy Tregear. He doesn't dream of taking lives, but of destroying them. Nothing makes him happier than seeing the miserable sight of someone who's been made aware just how little they and their pathetic dreams matter in this cold, uncaring reality. He wants to laugh at you. He wants you to wish you were dead. And if you're lucky, he might even grant that wish before moving on to his next source of entertainment. All of which is to say, he is a spectacular antagonist. Best Returning Past Character: There were a lot of great guests this year on Zi-O, but I've gotta give it to Shouichi in the Agito arc. His actor slid back into the role like he never left, and as cool as everyone else was, they can't compete with how warm Shouichi is. He's the perfect guy for a nostalgic return like this, because even back in his own series 19 years ago, he was already about making people feel like they were home. Seeing him again put a huge smile on my face to a level nobody else managed, and it doesn't hurt that the episodes he was in were absolutely amazing besides. Best Actor: Sou Okuno as everyone's favorite overlord in Zi-O. Seeing fresh young actors grow exponentially in talent over a year is often one of the most delightful parts of Kamen Rider, and I can't think of any leads lately who had such a pronounced evolution over their series. Him at the start of Zi-O and the end are practically night and day. Sougo was a really, really complicated character, and unfortunately, not always for reasons that seemed entirely intentional on part of the show's staff. It was a demanding role, which called for a lot of range, and I really believe Okuno rose to the challenge throughout the year. As the story progressed, he developed a very consistent set of mannerisms for Sougo, and whatever emotions the episodes called for, he proved he could hit with aplomb, often nailing subtle little inflections that really elevated the show's best moments. Best Actress: Noa Tsurushima as Izu in Zero-One. Speaking of demanding roles, playing a robot who has to also emote frequently, but not in ways that make it seem too much like you're emoting... it's a tightrope. One that she's walking skillfully even this early on in the show's run. I vaguely remember from the announcement press conference her saying she watched a lot of like, news broadcasts and the like to get a feel for how act in a composed and mechanical manner, but, whatever she did, it's paying off. She already has an almost perfect grasp on the particular mechanical, unchanging cadence the character requires, and is equally good at keeping a straight face in scenarios where it can not be easy to do so. Best Writer: Junko Koumura, for the six or so episodes of Lupinranger VS Patranger that aired this year, but really just for everything. And I mean everything. You've gotta understand, I've loved her writing since Kamen Rider Wizard, so to see her getting better and better since then has been so satisfying. What her work on LuPat in particular cemented for me is that I think she may very well be the best dialogue writer working in toku right now. This applies just as much to Zyuohger, really, but the impeccable flow and characterization present in so many of LuPat's conversations is a massive part of what makes the show so amazing. Some of those chats between Kairi and Keiichirou in particular are just magical. Best Director: Teruaki Sugihara, who is generally awesome, but also has the particular honor of directing the best action scene in all of Zi-O, the big throwdown at the end of the Agito arc in episode 32, which is destined to go down as one of the all-time great moments in Rider history. And the rest of those episodes aren't too shabby in their own right. Best Suit Design: I really want to say Rising Hopper, for being an almost objectively perfect design, but I figure that's not too interesting to talk about. And... Yeah, we've reached the obligatory contrarian section of my picks for the year. But forgive me, I honestly do love Zi-O Trinity that much. Part of it may be how much dang fun it was in the show building my attachment to it, between Seiji Takaiwa getting to do a version of his Climax Form body language that's somehow even better, the stretch of Zi-O where it was in use being a string of one memorable episode after another, and Sougo adorably acting like he was in a super robot show and always exciting being all like "Let's combine!" in every fight scene while Geiz and Woz roll their eyes, but it's my favorite Zi-O design by far. It's a great mix of bulky and sleek. The black and gold mix really well. Having the word "Rider" engraved on all of said gold bits over and over again is such a gaudy extension of the show's usual design sense I can't help but respect it. And most importantly, something about the whole heterochromia thing super jives with me. I just think it looks cool, alright? It's another one of those designs where I thought it looked super ugly in the catalogs, but as soon as it was in the show, I was almost instantly won over. Best Weapon/Vehicle/Mecha: I will give Zero One's designs their due with the Attache Calibur, though. I have a thing for weapons that fold up into briefcases, and the fact that this one belongs to an actual corporate executive makes it more appropriate thematically than I think one of these has ever been, to the point where Zero-One almost looks cooler holding while it's closed. Not that I know what looks cool or not. After all, I just said I liked Zi-O Trinity! Best Dramatic Scene: It's hard to narrow this one down, but I'm going with the prelude to Zi-O and Geiz's showdown with Another Zi-O from episode 28 of, uh, Zi-O. I always find myself thinking of that scene to the point where it's sort of become iconic of the series in my mind. I love how restrained the show actually is in what is THE big turning point for Sougo and Geiz's relationship. The dialogue doesn't go over the top, and that makes the drama hit that much harder. Geiz starts out just mildly roasting Sougo for showing up to their agreed-upon fight already beat up, despite Geiz himself already being beat up, keeping his emotional distance as usual, and it really naturally slides into Sougo admitting how much knowing Geiz and Tsukuyomi has meant to him, a bit of earnestness that itself leads into the actual dramatic turnaround, where Geiz finally reciprocates after half the series. There's not even any music for most of it. It's an incredibly well executed scene, and while there are a lot of scenes on this level in Zi-O, this one sticks with me the most. Best Comedic Scene: It doesn't really translate all that well, but the bit in episode 31 of Zi-O (which, yes, means another bit of greatness from the Agito arc) where the Zikan Despear's "kamashisugi!" sound plays after Woz embarassess himself with the overly dramatic speech I have screenshots of above is definitely the hardest I've laughed at anything toku all year. It's one of the very, very few times one of the gags Rider likes to do nowadays where they use sound effects from the belts and weapons comedically actually landed for me. Although I think Zi-O pumped that that well a lot less than other recent shows, so maybe the fact that it was an actual occasion is what made it funnier. Biggest "WTF did I just watch?" Moment: Zi-O's Kiva arc. Stretching the definition of "moment", I know, but both of those episodes were such a trip. Why Inoue? Why manholes? Why Ginga? Who Ginga? You know the show had entered the Twilight Zone when the plot revolves around Sougo's crush on a woman instead of the usual extremely conspicuous chemistry he has with Geiz and Woz. Best Song: This category has so many strong contenders this year I'm bluntly refusing to pick one. I've opted to instead select a veritable Trinity of songs that all stuck out to me for their own unique reasons. Zi-O, Toki no Ouja, which we technically first heard at the very end of last year, but come on. Anyways, this song was composed by Toshihiko Sahashi himself, and as such it follows the trend I really loved about his motifs for Zi-O, which is that it doesn't have an overtly heroic sound, despite being the rousing hero theme for Sougo. The song also became something of the backbone of the entire soundtrack with how often remixed bits of it were worked into other tracks, so this is also an award to Zi-O's entire soundtrack in spirit. Plus, the lyrics were written by Rider song super veteran Shouko Fujibayashi, whose poetic touch was sorely missing from most of Build's songs, as cool as they were. Go! Now! ~Alive A life Neo~, the appeal of which is a lot less complicated. A sequel song to one of my favorite Rider openings ever by all the same people? With lyrics that still do the cool thing where the first verse is more from Shinji's perspective while the second is from Ren's? Sign me right the heck up! Rider Time: Ryuki was worth it just because I got this out of it. Buddy, Steady, Go!, which is repping Taiga's excellent themes. Don't get me wrong, both ED's are spectacular too, but the opening is like, the ultimate motivational jam. I cannot describe to you how much I love lyrics like わからない事は猛勉強, 情けない自分はもう結構. Best Piece of Merchandise: As usual, this comes with the caveat that I'm not actually getting my hands on much of this stuff (although you'd better believe I didn't pass up the chance to get some belated Go-Busters merch thanks to Beast Morphers), but I'd like to shout out any of the mecha from Ryusoulger. I was always huge into LEGO as a little kid, and I like toys that actively encourage creativity, so the whole shtick this year is something I have to applaud Bandai for. I'm sure it rubs some people's adult collector senses the wrong way, but I can tell you right now, if someone handed those things to me when I was like five years old, they would've been my favorite things ever. Biggest Surprise of 2019: I can't actually think of a lot that truly caught me off guard this year, so I'm gonna echo Kiwami and say Kamen Rider Brain becoming a thing and being awesome. I knew Drive was fairly popular, and I knew Riku Sanjou generally doesn't make things that aren't awesome, so neither the announcement or the result were truly surprising, but it was definitely an oddball spinoff to happen. Biggest Disappointment of 2019: This one's easy. Me coming up with the genius idea to do a gag for April Fools where I'd post in the current Zi-O episode thread with one of my usual, overly analytical reviews about the similarly numbered of Power Rangers Zeo... on April 2nd. A once in a lifetime opportunity, gone just like that. Would it have been funny? I don't know, and worse... I'll never get to. The Ferbus Memorial Award for Single Worst Thing in 2019 Tokusatsu: I don't actually get that upset about a lot of things when it comes to tokusatsu, but let me tell ya', that Gold Ranger debacle in Beast Morphers. I don't condone physical violence as a solution to problems, but whoever decided Beet Buster and his robot look "close enough" to a f***ing praying mantis definitely deserves a very stern talking to. They literally already came up with a better solution to this non-problem back during Ninja Storm! What is wrong with the people working on these shows?! And then you have the gall to say Silver's motif is a scarab beetle, when rhinoceros beetles are scarabs and stag beetles explicitly aren't?! Did somebody on the staff just actively want to feed children factually incorrect information about wildlife or something? The carrot thing was fine. I get that one. Pop culture and healthy eating, whatever. But this? For shame, Power Rangers. For shame. Uh, just in case it's not obvious, I'm playing up the bit here, but this really was a baffling thing to watch play out.
