Appropriately, this episode's plot really does feel like it came straight out of a Showa sentai. And it's a really good one!
All the zaniness for most of the episode was really fun, Tsukasa letting Minako fawn over Inubrother in particular was by far my favourite bit. But the seamless shift into the drama for the climax brings all the bittersweetness you'd want out of a touching ghost story. I was actually expecting the twist to turn out that Minako was actually pining for a fictional character from her favourite manga, but I'm pretty happy with the more 'straightforward' resolution to the story. |

I think I might have to add this to the "Best Toku episodes"-list. It was simply fantastic. The comedy and drama were on point.
Donbrothers is absolutely killing it. |

Looking at how empty the discussion are, there aren’t a whole lot of engagement. When was the last time sentai got a decent conversation. Don start out strong, but the plot with gold/silver, pink/black/beastials, red/kaito/Jin the adopted father, and now purple/some AI mother of the villain. Seem one plot thread get place in back and forgotten. It’s normal that we don’t even talk about some of these plot points anymore. It keep stack up more questions than answering and when there answer it’s very basic one.

A good bittersweet episode, I enjoyed it. A nice change of pace- Donbros's MOTWs are usually background stuff to whatever the squad is doing this week (ex: Kyoryuger MOTW) or is used as a means to reveal something about a certain character (Jetman MOTW), so its nice for a MOTW plot to take center stage for the entire episode. Feels more traditionally Sentai than your average Donbros ep, but that isn't bad at all! It's nice to know they can pull off eps like this too.

(Besides, hasn't Sentai typically always get lower engagement in these threads compared to Rider? (Mostly due to the existence of a Sentai-centric forum being the place where most watching Donbros watchers might flock + since the first half of a Sentai mostly takes place during a Rider's endgame, more people are inclined to talk about how that show is wrapping itself up than this, lol. Plus it's an episodic plot, and good ones are like good sandwiches: You're not gonna write a full-blown culinary review on a sandwich, you say "hmm! good!" and go on. I'd wager people just think dropping "I liked this episode!" wouldn't be worth making a post on it. The fact that this thread has 12 excellent votes for this episode's rating, correlates with this statement. ) |

If it's any consolation though, here are a few of my miscellaneous thoughts about this episode: Could Saruhara and Kijino have used their magic glasses to see Minako? Considering how she can summon a Hitotsuki and physically interact with Don Robotarou and Inubrother, it seems like she's more tangible in the Noto Layer than she is in the human world. It's humorous how Inuzuka revealed his identity so casually to a girl he just met, while his own teammates are still completely out of the loop. Classic Inoue! Tadokoro Shinzou's actor is the same guy who voiced Ginis in Zyuohger! Don Dragokuu's use of Ninninjer Alter in his fight scene with Murasame was a cool surprise, since I didn't know those Alters could grow to human-size. I hope Murasame gets some plot development soon. While I enjoy his action and style, all he does so far is show up and fight people without even talking to them, which is kind of boring and repetitive to me. Engineki is the first Hitotsuki based on a 00s Sentai and it happens to be first one I ever watched!

I feel like Shirakura's bit on the blog this week, where he mentions how both Inoue and Morota apparently felt like they could've put more of a spin on this one than they did, despite Shirakura himself claiming he cried twice, kinda sums up this episode perfectly. Because, you know, I kinda think all three of them have a point? Donbrothers is a show that always seems to focus on doing things in an unorthodox fashion, and yet, everything about this episode is as straightforward as can be. The only norm Donbrothers is rebelling against here is the one it created for itself. That being said, maybe this isn't that unusual? Ever since episode 15, something about Donbrothers I've become consciously aware of is that, for how wacky and strange it's always being, a lot of its core storytelling actually sticks a lot more to the fundamentals than you might realize. Sure, if you focus on the current jumble of overarching plot threads or the way the merchandise-driven stuff is worked in, it doesn't look that way at all, but in terms of stories -- how characters with emotions and desires grow and change from the beginning to the end of each narrative -- I might go so far as to suggest that Donbrothers can be downright traditional. At the very least, this episode in particular is certainly as traditional as this series has ever gotten. It doesn't surprise me to hear that Inoue apparently wondered if he should've gone a little crazier with it. But the thing is, I've also come to realize that those strong fundamentals are maybe what I love about Donbrothers more than how weird and different it is (and I do love the weirdness!), so it surprises me even less to hear that Shirakura was exceptionally pleased with how this one turned out. And, well, as for my personal opinion: I mean, come on, it's a toku thing about Ghosts directed by Satoshi Morota. How I am not gonna love that? Honestly, the only -- the singular -- negative thought I had about this one was that I really wish they made more than one version of Don Onitaijin's combination stock footage. I've already been thinking for a while that they're struggling with the ad-lib spots in a way Zenkaiger never did, but for a story like this, a designated "serious" version where nobody's mouth moves really would've helped the mood. The sound editing there got a bit awkward, for sure. But like, outside of that? It's a wonderfully human little standalone tale that delivers on wacky comedy and bittersweet melancholy alike. Basically everything that makes Donbrothers great. That's maybe something worth emphasizing here. Especially with bits like Dons Murasame and Dragoku's contractually obligated fight scene that serves no narrative purpose, this is the kind of standalone "filler" type episode that would ordinarily have the air of some random guest writer taking a stab at a show, but here, this is still 100% the same guy who's written every episode of the series. Despite the self-criticism, it's like, you can really feel this is a story Inoue wanted to tell. Flip that earlier statement around, and Jirou's role is only as awkward as it is because Inoue wrote a random story about a ghost instead, you know, something that actually required the latest toys to be there. It's uh... it's okay if I just let the episode mostly speak for itself here, right? I'm trying to think of how to actually dig into it, between how funny it is, and how sad, and how sweet, but it's just... it almost feels somewhat crass trying to unpack it too much? Like, for example, I really love the detail that Minako has such a strong mental image of this guy she's never actually seen, and how that both makes for funny jokes while also genuinely saying something touching about her feelings for Shinzou, but for some reason, it's like, I'd kinda rather just let everyone ponder this episode on their own. Suffice it to say, it's a really well-realized installment of a consistently great series, and since it *is* such a standalone story, I can even see this being a go-to recommendation in the future if anyone ever asks for a single episode that makes for a good sample of what Donbrothers is all about. (You may think this would be misleading since this episode is so "normal", but honestly, I'm pretty sure it mostly just looks that way to people who are already used to how this show rolls.)

From the premise alone, I knew where this episode was going, and yet it still amazes me how beautiful this episode turned out.
It's simple, it's easy to figure where this episode is going, and yet, I loved it, way more than I thought. Zenkaiger was great in how off the walls it was, every moment had me smiling, this is somewhat like that, and yet it's not just being goofy (which I don't mind at all, since I adore Zenkaiger for that), it has something that honestly feels like something Ultraman does a lot, which I am all for. It was funny how Minako just apparently likes hot guys, so just about every other guy she fawned over. Loved the bits about how their dates went, from Tarou being both a great date and a not so good date, Inuzaka being doggo, and Kaito being the actual Prince Charming (I was wondering what was up with the getup in the preview). This show is like a more serious Zenkaiger, which I've been enjoying immensely. Next Episode: Wait. Usopp? What are you doing her? |

Didn't Minako die the exact same way someone did in Zi-O? Hilarious coincidence as I believe Inoue only wrote for the Kiva episodes
