This looks way more like Shin Godzilla than I was expecting.
Ultraman is a lot... weirder than Godzilla, so it'll be super interesting to see how a focus on a modern, realistic Japanese bureaucracy's response to the Ultraman mythology plays out compared to Shin Godzilla's similar approach to the much more straight-forward Godzilla mythology. I'm totally with you on this. I always prefer suits, puppets, and practical effects. I was just opining on the reasoning from Tsubaraya and Anno's perspective.
Also you have to consider that while original toku fans love the old suits, there is a huge new generation of fans for which CGI is considered superior and expected. Like today's kids laugh when they see the zipper on an Ultraman suit, but CGI is so much easier for them to suspect disbelief on. It's just a given form of entertainment. |

I can't remember if there ever was an answer to that from official sources, but supposedly it's because Hideaki Anno wanted to really emphasize the "Alien" aspect of Ultraman for the film, this is also why Ultraman's proportions are so weird to. It's intentionally meant to look off so that it puts the viewer more in a panicked civilian characters' perspective rather than Ultraman's. Imagine fleeing from kaiju and then this giant, red, vaguely human looking... thing suddenly just manifest out of thin air and start's wrestling with it.

So I saw the poster and I can tell from the dog tag that the name engraved on it is Shinji but can't make heads or tails of what the surname is. My current bet is either Kamimura or Kamimasa.

I was going to say the same. They look fine to me.

Weird, where's his color timer?
Also, while some may not like how cartoon-y the monsters seem, I think it's honestly fine for me since at least they're not trying to hide it. It's not something like Pacific Rim or Godzilla: KoM where they hide the CGI monster in some filters and shadows to look 'realistic'. The only one off-putting here I feel is Ultraman whom is CGI. I preferred if he was a suit, but I guess they wouldn't do that to distinguish him from regular Ultraman. Ultraman getting a Shin movie, made me think what other kinda movies Anno is willing to do. I know he's also interested in a Shin Evangelion movie, but I wonder if he started to delve into maybe a Shin Super Sentai or, hell, bring back Shin Kamen Rider? |

I haven't got that impression, I fear. 3.0+1.0 has the actual tagline of "Bye-bye all of Evangelion." I mean never say never, and you could argue that Eva is essentially cyclical storytelling, and there's obviously going to be spin offs, but I think Anno has said all he has to say with this story.
*sigh* I wish he'd make something like Love & Pop again. |

There's actually a reason for this! For Ultraman's design in this movie, they returned as much as possible to the original concept art by Toru “Tohl” Narita, linked below. This means no dorsal fin, no eyeholes; and of course most notably, no colour timer. Their goal is to approach the beauty of the very initial vision of “truth, justice, and beauty” upon which Narita formed his image of Ultraman.

I can't wait to see if/how Shin Ultraman is included in Ultra canon going forward. Will he be in 2021's Ultra Galaxy Fight?
