A friend of mine recently told me that his interested in checking out Super Sentai and he asked me for a recommendation.
I thought I shouldn't start him with any from the 70's, 80's or 90's since he might find it too dated and gets turned off by the franchise. So I was thinking something from the 2000's and I thought Gokaiger might be good since he will see the suits from the previous 34 teams and some idea how the other series were like. But then i thought since this will be his first series a lot of the callbacks and the cameos of the legend sentai will be lost on him. Dekaranger is my other option since I don't know if he will have the patience to sit through an entire season and Dekaranger with its episodic format might appeal to him more. Though I may not be giving him enough credit since I know he has seen a couple of KR shows from start to finish. What do you guys think?

I always tell people check out Akibaranger. It's so meta and fun and tongue in cheek it's great. And for me the way it references so many of the other Sentai shows made me want to watch more Sentai shows.
I'm not sure I would've started watching and enjoying Sentai as much if I hadn't started with Akibarranger. I know it's the "Unofficial Sentai",..but I love that show. (I've only watched Zyuranger, Dairanger, and Akibaranger in completion. With random episodes of other shows (and some Ninja Steel MMPR) here and there,..so….my Sentai experience is limited.) |

I think out of the recent batch of seasons this past decade the show is mild enough to serve as a decent starting point. The assortment of rangers we get are also diverse peronality-wise and Yamato/Zyuoh Eagle feels like a well-balanced red ranger who is not too extreme. Also... MINECRAFT MEGAZORD. And they got one of the most badass tsuika senshis(additional warrior) with Zyuoh The World. It is also an anniversary season that does not require heavy knowledge of past seasons.

I'd say Gokaiger works, yeah. You really don't need to know the older Sentai to get most of the references, and it can serve as a decent primer on all of the other shows in case your friend wants to try something else afterwards. Plus it's just a really good show.

Whatever you do, do NOT recommend Kyoryuger or Ninninger as an entry series.
Gokaiager's pretty good, although I'd say your friend would be fine with shows like Magiranger or the (currently) ongoing Lupinranger vs Patranger. ALSO, some Sentai shows have crossover episodes with Kamen Rider, so unless your friend is a fan of Kamen Rider, probably avoid those crossovers to avoid confusion. Probably ranting too much by this point, but try showing him the Super Hero Getter song so that he could decide. After all, that song pretty much sums up a key point of a previous series in one sentence without giving away too much spoiler details. As much as possible, show him the updated 2016 version so he has more options to choose from. |

I'm not sure what I could offer as a recommended starting point, seeing as I don't watch much Sentai.
However, as someone who actually DID try to get into Sentai with Gokaiger, I actually heavily recommend against it, it wasn't a very enjoyable experience for me personally as an entry point. |

I’d say go for it. Gokaiger was the first series I watched, and the cameos actually gave me a really good idea on what Sentai I would want to watch next.

It was my first series too. I'd been watching Linkara's History of Power Rangers and I'd watched some MMPR and Wild Force as a kid, so I had -some- connection to the suits. In fact, that's who I'd recommend it for the most as a starting point -- someone who has some sort of connection to Power Rangers. Obviously Sentai has vastly different plots and characters - especially when it comes to Go-Onger - but it's still nice to have that vague connection and recognition.
