Super Sentai is sort of an odd beast in that any particular series of it is made up of two distinct parts. This combination is part of what makes the series so great.
On the one hand, we have the Henshin Hero style part of the story, where our heroes transform into their colorful costumes and battle monsters and villains using their powers and arsenal, including hand weapons, firarms, vehicles, armor, and so forth. In this sense, the Super Sentai is similar to shows like Kamen Rider or the Metal Heroes. On the other hand, we also have the Giant Meka aspect of the show, where a Super Robot (or Robots) battles a giant monster, often in the midst of a city, using fantastic strength and terrible weapons. Here we see the inspiration from Kyodai Hero shows like the Ultra Series as well as Super Robot anime such as Mazinger Z and Brave Raideen. So, simple question: which part of the Super Sentai appeals more to you? Do you get excited to see the heroes engage the monster in the streets? Or does your blood get pumping to see the "heavy metal" hit the scene?

Simple, not so much. It's a tough choice because I enjoy both aspects, but being a long time Gundam and kaiju fan,I'd have to say the mecha aspect.Nothing beats seeing two giant monsters or a monster vs giant robot scenario.

Depends on the series. Gokaiger it was the Mech Battles, Goseiger it was both, Kyoryuger it's both. Especially if Nossan is involved. (I to eat yogurt while leaning on doorframes)
Same goes for MMPR. Zeo it was all about the Zords, Turbo I skipped, In Space I skipped, Lost Galaxy it was both. It just all depends. |

the Henshin Heroes fighting the monster. I like the martials arts, weapons and the different styles of fighting. Only when the Mech battles are good do I enjoy them.

Most of the time I prefer the Henshin Hero aspect, but when a series has good mecha battles like Boukenger, Gekiranger, or Go-Busters, I'll enjoyed both aspects.

Giant Robots.
What? It's the reason I liked Power Rangers when I first became aware of it, so it's my favorite part of Super Sentai. |

Back when I was watching Power Rangers, the giant robot battles were undoubtedly my favorite parts. More specifically, I enjoyed watching the transformations as they were beautiful to my eyes.
Now, as they use extensive CGI that simply cannot replace models, I find myself liking the giant robot battles less. If anything, they feel too tacked on after a while, as the climax is often during the monster of the week's first death. On the other hand, Super Sentai choreography and battles are more exciting than Power Rangers, so the Henshin Hero aspect is definitely my favorite part.

Henshin Hero. Seeing the rangers fighting themselves is my favorite part.

Henshin Hero.
I think almost unanimously the mecha parts of the show suck. I can kinda appreciate their craptasticness in the early 90s shows or earlier where a dude in a box fights in a cardboard city against a rubber puppet but as the rest of the show progressed the mecha stuff didn't apart from making the suits from what looks like lego. Not to mention that I think a majority of the mecha designs are just hideous, recent sentai is criticised for 'stacking' but I think the problem goes way further back, where streamlined and functioning individual robots which would look pretty cool would then pile together into a huge mess. It's probably been a good fifteen or so years, maybe longer, where we've had a combined Super Robot that actually looked like a mech and not just a dude with lots of shit hanging off him like Buckaroo. Although I did love Ace's mech form in Go-Busters as it looks like an actual mech. It's the little things as well, mechs never have so much range of movement, if you want to convince me that is a robot don't move like a person. And if you need to build the suit out of a light material, fine, but don't give the suit actor a range of movement that has all the external bits flapping up and down showcasing how flimsy it all is, it's I assume supposed to pass off as metal so the whole thing shouldn't be flapping around the place unless you really need a new mechanic. The actual Rangers battles on the other hand have come a long, long way and the kind of stuff they can do in the show now is just insane. It's come a long way from dudes in spandex with cardboard cut out to make weapon shapes and now is often better than what most big budget american comicbook movies do and I just love it.

I can't answer this with those choices. It varies from show to show. Some shows have great mecha battles while others make them an after thought.
PS I was disappointed when this thread wasn't a chance to gush about 90's Sentai, my favorite part of Sentai. Last edited by Blade Raider; 07-03-2013 at 11:41 AM.. |
