Two movies subbed in one week? That’s a new one.

Oh, hey, was just thinking of making this thread!
So, uh... that was... certainly a movie. There's a lot here I like; and the bones of a good story are here in Aruto's connection to his father; said father's involvement in creating Zero-One; and the resolution of Aruto not succeeding anyone but instead being his own origin (which as a moral, is really good and forward-thinking). Unfortunately I'm not very positive it works. The movie jumps around almost randomly and haphazardly; as if it had a vision and a lot of random "wouldn't-it-be-cool-if" ideas with little concept of how to structure them or create a cohesive story. Zi-O barely has a place in this movie -- it hardly continues these characters' story; the new Timejacker is an afterthought; no-one beyond the main four returns; the history of the Heisei Riders is little more than a namedrop and a Momotaros voice cameo; and everything gets reset by the end probably for Next Time: Geiz. Sougo and Aruto don't exactly have a connection with each other throughout the movie and this cast which I was very excited to see return ultimately just... ended up being extra Kamen Riders to help fight and occasionally spout a catchphrase. Woz doesn't even get to rejoice, like, come on! At least we finally got to see Tsukuyomi fight... and... I guess she can do that one energy ball attack Burai did once in Zyuranger and never again. As for Zero-One, despite every cast member featuring; all of them are just alternate universe versions that get wiped away after the credits, so it's difficult to form any connection beyond "yeah, I guess this is how Fuwa would turn out in a Terminator AU". That said, it's pretty interesting to see more sympathetic sides of Hiden's two stooges; the series treats them as jokes but this movie oddly went out of its way to make them dedicated and empathetic heroes. Can't say I'm complaining. Really though, this is a movie about Aruto, Soreo and Will with everything else being window dressing. And like I say, there's definitely the core of a good story in here, but it's a bit messy and I'd be disingenuous if I said it all comes together and ultimately works. You only really get a good grasp for the base concept because the execution really fails to sell you. If I didn't know any better, I'd almost theorise that the base story here was originally conceptualised as 2-3 episodes in Zero-One before having to be thrown into a Zi-O crossover. Another Ichigo, um, exists? It took 'all of the Rider powers' from Sougo, but he never got Showa Rider powers, and he's able to use the full extent of Grand just fine? So what-- gah, it's Zi-O. I should know by now that at its best and its worst, you just don't question this series. Talking of Grand Zi-O, uh, best scene in the movie! Aruto going "WHO THE HECK ARE THOSE GUYS" got me laughing so bad, and it's nice to see the Grand Zi-O powers actually used in a satisfying way again. Only took, like, the 6 months since its debut!

Glad we got another Grand Zi-O appearance, but other than that the movie had too much going on.
I think I actually liked Geiz Majesty better for the secondary rider ca meos. |

That was a fun movie, not the best Movie Wars, not the worst either. But it's nice to kinda just return to the older-new format given we only ever got 1 Single Story Movie War styled movie with Ghost and Drive. The rest have been more ensemble pieces and while that's fine, it's a nice change of pace that they dialed that back since we've had one of those for the past three movies.
Structurally I think the movie works pretty well even if there's a few kinks, it's primarily a Zero-One story that focuses on a "What-If" event thanks to Time Jacker interference. And that's the thing, Finis is mostly there just to provide how it happened and to act as one big last wall for the heroes to overcome to return history to normal. They don't overstay their welcome and while they are indeed the big boss monster, they aren't in it enough to be the main villain. Because that's what Will is. So as a result the Zi-O Cast takes a more passive role in the events, with Sougo becoming a sorta mentor figure. Which is a bit of a shame but they are still enjoyable in it. Especially getting to see Tsukuyomi and Woz bust a lot of heads. Geiz isn't too impressive, but he has an entire movie after this so you know, him being downplayed here isn't that bad. Also can we like trade the alternate versions of the VP Stooges for the ones in the show because man were those two more likeable here. But anyway, action was fun, there was just a lot of cool moments and bits in it. Hopper digging it's way out due to the Ark being in space instead of Zea. Tsukuyomi's energy abilities being expanded on to where she can just manipulate other forms of energy before turning them into something else. Yua and Fuwa's excellent teamwork and the fact they got to do the finishing blow on Another Zero-One. Not to mention all those little foreshadowing bits that were present, the idea of fighting against Hiden, Fuwa having a nightmare about being a Humagear, Aruto and his business cards. Most of which have only occurred in these past few episodes while this was released around episode 16, with most of this stuff not getting addressed until 13 to 14 episodes later. It's just really neat and interesting. But MvP of this movie is probably gonna go to Soreo Hiden, dude was just really great as a Rider. And I like how it's implied that Finis literally only got involved right when the Ark was going to launch and that's how history got changed. So as a result in Zero-One lore, there is a Kamen Rider known as Ichi-Gata that was active during Daybreak's incident. The suit is just a nice homage to Rider 1 with 01 aesthetics and the fact that it releases an energy scarf trail during it's super speed/finisher moments is really, really cool. But yeah overall pretty fun, it's not my absolute favorite Movie Wars styled movie, but it definitely ranks higher than quite a few of them. |

Kurona stole most of my thoughts, so I'm just gonna do a quick summary
The Good! - The Zero-One character stuff, especially that between Soreo and Aruto, very good. - Ichi-gata looks great. As do 001 and Another Zero-One, to be fair. Kinda wishing 001 had shown up in the latest bit of the show, even if just to job hard. - Woz - Nice to see Yua not working for Gai for the first time in months - Like, all the Zero-One stuff is reasonably solid, there's a good film in there! If not for... The Bad - I'm guessing Finis came from the same unspecified group as Tid, because where did they come from? Good question. - The Zi-O cast is very underused, and I'm glad Geiz Majesty shows more promise for them than this did. They show up, they fight, they don't even get any funky new forms (Seriously, not even an Ichigo Armor for Zi-O?) Also he now has Showa powers which he forgot all about, which is a big metaphor for Toei or something idk. - HOW DOES BLOWING UP GEIZ'S TIME MACHINE FIX ALL THE PROBLEMS? This might be a subs issue, but I don't get it. - Speaking of subs issues, I don't quite get why Aruto's dad was fighting him at the end. To make him prove how strong he is, or something? It didn't quite click. So yeah. Not the worst movie wars film (Hi Drive/Ghost, thanks for existing), but nowhere near the best.

So does anyone else think the music associated with Ichi-gata, especially when they put an emotional spin on it, sounds a lot like the soundtrack to the Tower of Heaven video game? Probably just me.
Anyhow, it was a fun enough crossover film. Although like Kurona already said, it's not really a 'crossover' for most of it because the Zi-O cast might as well have been glorified cameos. |

Or, to put another spin on it, just as Zi-O did to its returning riders in early episodes, so has happened to the Zi-O riders themselves. Circle of life and all that.
It doesn't make sense, because it's supposed to be a cross-over, not a cameo, but *shrug*. EDIT: Also, let's all agree that AU Gai got killed by the Ark-controlled Humagears. Let's see if your plans are still going at 1000% now, dumbass.

Like, imagine you're this evil mastermind CEO who hates your rival's funny robots and it's getting in the way of selling your own stuff. So you play some 6-dimensional chess and come up with a galaxy brain idea that involves making your rival's funny robots hate humanity so that eventually people want them to be gone forever, simultaneously selling not just your economic product of the Zaiaspec but the warmongering product of the Kamen Rider/Raider! Everything's going well... until this, like, time demigod comes out of nowhere, turns one of the Funny Robots into a biological monster, and essentially turns your infected satellite from rogue isolated agent to world-conquering Skynet levels that leads to the end of all humanity and your own power and wealth. For, like, no reason. And you swear you've seen this weird giant spider bike thing going about everywhere. What the flying f*ck just happened????

Gai's hyper brain manipulation was going fine until a Zi-O villain up and made things too confusing for any mortal mind.
