Let's assume for a minute that the new Garo anime is highly successful. There's nothing saying it won't be, but for the sake of argument let's say it is. Highly rated, the merch sells awfully well, everyone's happy.
What could this mean for other Toku Shows getting their own anime adaptations? There are a couple pros to deciding to do a season of Sentai or Kamen Rider as an anime instead of live action. Price being the biggest. No having to spend budget on sets, costumes, elaborate villains, special effects, locations. Pyrotechnics. You could do more visually than you can with a LA show. You can have the Mechs look however you want without being bound by what the prop department can do. Same with the villains. And there are plenty of production houses to choose from. You could choose a different house/style each season to change it up. I don't think though we'll see one right away if we do see one. What I think might happen is they'll do a special full-length movie as an anime first. See how that works and then go on from there. What do we think? |

My guess is it would be a side project in Toei's case. They'd probably make something like SD Rider as a quirky ongoing project running along side whatever traditional shows are airing.

I can see it now: Heisei/Neo-Heisei SD Rider and then Later release Showa X Heisei SD Rider.

Honestly I kinda want the GARO anime to fail because I'd hate to see Rider and Sentai get moved to animation. Why? I'm a HUGE film nerd, and about 99% of the reason I love tokusatsu is the imagination and effort that has to go into making a comicbook fight sequence, week in, week out on a VERY tight budget.
A lot of toku by your usual standards doesn't look all that impressive but they kind of things they can do on screen, the kind of things they've been doing since like the 70s, America has barely caught up to that in AAA movies with heavy CGI. As a construction tokusatsu is just so wonderful, and all that magic is lost through animation.

It may happen, but very unlikely.
Last time we heard Toei's president Tada Noriyuki said he wanted to make the 6am slot to have another tokusatsu program, and Toei-Video is really pushing Space Sheriff for some reason. Now with Hikasa Jun swapped position with Shirakura and being the representive director / president of the TV production division I see there will be more wacky tokusatsu programs coming in. Toei is a drama/movie production company. Toei tokusatsu programs are training grounds for new staff, and new talents. They will only increase LIVE productions to get more profit, not less. For Garo it is a different case. It is a 'self-funded' project, and doesn't restricted to things that Toei has. Amemiya is a digital artist. As long as he has the right men and the right sponsor beside him Amemiya won't hestitate trying out risky projects. |
