So, i've been thinking what the most important series of Super Sentai are, in terms of influence (note: not best).
My list would go like this 1. Goranger (for starting it) 2. Battle Fever J (for bringing mecha into it) 3. Zyuranger (Power Rangers, 6th hero, and expanding thematically) 4. Kakuranger (second main mecha) 5. Carranger (saving the series from being cancelled) What do you guys think? Do you agree with this order? Would you replace anything with a different series?

Why is Power Rangers being brought up when it doesn't affect Sentai that much in terms of importance?

I think you could argue that both Jetman and Zyuranger were pivotal for Sentai. Jetman set the tone for future Sentai shows, while Zyuranger globalized Sentai.

According to Weekly Georgia's interview with Shirakura (web magazine, mobile only) the sponsors had the red flag up to cancel the show already. Shirakura and a couple of new staff actually got permission from the sponsors and Toei, fired the chief director (who was also Kikaider series's chief director) at the time, and broke the 'industry rule' of having 'odd numbers team only' (3, 5, or 7 members) by adding a single permanent member. The decision was successful, and the sponsors were happy with that. Downside of the decision was many of the old producers and directors left the company due to Shirakura's action. |

Jetman to show that a kid's show could be successful while having adult themes and story lines.
Zyuranger for presenting the first sixth ranger as a regular character and not a one-off. Kakuranger for having the first female and non-red leader. Sun Vulcan for the first mecha that combines. Go-Busters for giving everyone a perfect example of how a show can be considered a failure on all fronts (although it is one of my favorites). |

I think Go-Busters is the most important sentai, as a reflection on the failings of the Japanese market. Go-Busters is the only sentai series in the whole franchise to attempt a complete overhaul, to break the clichés and to update the franchise and all they get from Japan is a massive 'NOPE'. For whatever reason, their culture, more than any other although only marginally seem to revel in homogeneity.
The series of shakeups in the series which lead it to derailing horribly until all the haters think they were always right. The series after Go-Busters weren't horrible but they don't impress me in nearly the same way Go-Busters did.

I agree with Battle Fever J for adding the Mechs, I haven't seen Jetman but I could agree for the tone, Carranger for saving the series, Go-Busters for showing what not to do sadly, and Kyoryuger for changing the formula for Sentai's right now. If the next ones after ToQGer don't follow the same formula then I'll take this back.
