Do you prefer individual issues, compilation volumes, or do you prefer graphic novels? Do you think graphic novels are comic books of a sort or not?
As "food for thought" (if you can call it that), an article on graphic novels (but not a particularly glowing testimonial, with a lens on economics and societal implications): https://www.jacobinmag.com/2019/12/g...gentrification |

Size mainly, which also tends to affect how the overall story flows.
Regular issue comics are smaller and are oftentimes part of larger overarcing scenario. Compilation volumes take a bunch of these issues and put them together into one book. And graphic novels tend to be bigger, one-off stories. To give a TV comparison: Comic Strips = 1 episode Compilation Volumes = An entire arc/season Graphic Novels = A movie |

I like both equally because It really depends on who is the author of the book. If I had to choose, I do like finishing a series quicker than I would with a long ongoing series. So probably Graphic Novel.

I don't mind getting both single issues and compilation volumes. I get the logic of both, while simultaneously understanding complaints regarding either or.
Graphic Novels tend to be more rare and unlikely. I haven't yet gravitated to things like SAGA, but a buddy of mine LOVES it! I also believe that detractors, like the one behind that article I mentioned before, don't understand the logic behind any of the variations. Honestly, that article hit me kinda hard, as it depicted Graphic Novels as comics of a different and near-inconsequential sort, getting overly critical of specific genres! |

I have no real preference between compilation volumes and graphic novels, I love both!
But I could never handle reading a story through individual comic issues, I'm a completionist so the risk of missing or losing an issue would stress me out too much. Plus, most of the comics I'm excited about these days originated as webcomics, and those pretty much never get physical releases as individual issues, it's always compilation volumes. Same goes for the manga I read, when it even gets an official English release at all. Which isn't to say issues are bad or that I have anything against them! They're just not what works best for me. |

The bad part in my area is that there are so few choices. BAM is the only viable option, and they stopped selling new singles sometime ago. Compilation Volumes and Graphic Novels and Manga are retained, but the employees clearly don't know one from the other. I and a friend ended up helping someone find some DC volumes when the associate failed. Ultimately, the associate walked away as we were having more success! |

If I'm going to read one I'd rather have a book with complete stories.
I've been buying the Ultraman Manga volumes for my Daughter and plan on reading them soon. |
