First episode had a distinct "toku" feel to it.
Like it felt like it could have worked just as well in live-action. Similar pacing, character beats, set-up moments, etc. I also loved how the monster of this episode had traits reminiscent of a guy in an actual monster suit, specifically the flopping head and emotionless face. It seemed to make it more unsettling as a result. The trope of using the show's OP for the climax of the first fight was also great. Actually had me grinning from ear to ear watching it all play out. Only real thing I didn't like was the elongated scene of the class room frozen in shock after the special dog was squashed. Went on for way too long and felt like obvious time-wasting. But outside of that, impressed at how authentically toku it all felt. |

Well I know what I’m watching when I get home while waiting for Toonami to start!

I really enjoyed the episode, it felt very toku-like.
That being said I didn't like the way some scenes were done like the cuts when Yuta and Rikka when talking in the store, it felt like the video was corrupted or that it was lagging. Also as Shin Henshin pointed out: Yeah, I get why they wanted to emphasize that scene, since it would come down at play later, but yeah, it could've been shorter.

See that scene in particular felt like something that would have worked a lot better in a live-action setting. Since we've seen multiple scenes throughout toku where there are multiple cuts within a single scene. In animation it doesn't work as well and can be a bit jarring. Was a good attempt at replicating it, though.

So, this show has a true simuldub (released at the same time as the subs) and whoever is playing the virus villain is channeling Tim Curry's Kilokahn voice so hard and I love it. I don't think it's Tim Curry, but I find myself questioning if it is him. Sadly can't find a VA list beyond who's in the dub trailer.
As for the episode, I felt it was a little too slow in places. There's one shot in particular that I couldn't tell if the video was still playing because it was a single frame with no sound held for way, way, to long. Otherwise, I had a good time. Good fight, good designs. While I might be sounding negative, I want to watch more, and that's a good feeling to have after one episode. Last edited by Blade Raider; 10-07-2018 at 12:04 AM.. |

I have to agree that the first half of the episode was a little dull, but it improved towards the latter half when the action finally started to pick up.

Huh, I expected much more out of this after I’ve read what people said about it. The first episode was dull, generic and boring. A really pathetic start because it wants me to drop this show immediately more than anything else really.
And considering I have much better stuff to watch I might just do exactly that. If this was Toku I could get a kick out of monster- and hero-suits or special effects, but generic looking anime designs and these awful 3D-models they use for action sequences just don’t do it for me. |

Turns out, director Akira Amemiya is a massive Transformers fan.
To such an insane degree- every human character in SSSS Gridman thus far is based on a Transformers design from the "Shattered Glass" alternate universe. https://www.allspark.com/forums/topi...attered-glass/ |
