I'm in the same boat, in which I never read too much into rumors and leaks until something concrete lands. Especially when there are bold claims like I'm seeing here, I just never liked reading too much into some of these speculations.

Sure, modern seasons are better at integrating the mech battles into the story -- we're well past the days of the 70s-90s, when they were just excuses to overuse stock footage and pad out the runtime of the episode -- but they're never my favorite part. I'm interested to see how the creative team approaches these new digital-world battles, but I'm not particularly hopeful that they'll break the mold in a significant structural way. Something I loved about The High School Heroes -- a fucking fantastic series that far too few people are talking about -- is the lack of giant mech fights. I think HSH can be used as a proof-of-concept for how a mech-less Sentai series could work... and, if the Sentai heroes continue to look like mechs in their ground-level forms, I don't see the lack of traditional, giant-sized mechs in the series impacting the toylines that rely on mechs for sales. I generally agree with you, but once December hits and the toy retailers meeting has happened... the rumors are pretty rock solid. In fact, it's past the point that I'd even refer to the new batch of info as rumors. These are firsthand reports, backed up by numerous sources, of what was announced and revealed at this week's toy retailers meeting. Last edited by Kamen Rider Lucha; 12-03-2021 at 03:52 PM.. |

I'm not so big on mecha fights, except anniversary stuff where they bring out old mecha are cool and I like some of the 70s-90s ones for the old effects and early computer graphics, plus they can be shorter which is nice! Maybe the introduction of a giant robot did seem more groundbreaking in 1979 than now though.

It's not saying there's no mech battles, it's just saying they will be different.

I pretty sure giant robots are still used in DonBrother series.
I think the Super Sentai giant robots as merchandise is the most popular Super Sentai toy. I am fine with CGI Giant Robots especially if the fighting style is epic just like Good Cool Kaiser VSX |

While I don't know personally which sentai toys sell the best, I often hear people talk about how sentai mech in Japan are not as popular as they once were, largely due to there being cheaper but more complex robot toys on the market (specifically shinkalion has been doing really well as sentai toy sales overall have plummeted) I don't really have first hand experience of thus but I remember Taka from kotetsu toys has a video where he talked about it (I think it's one of the ones about sentai making less money each year), and I've heard other people from Japan mirror the same sentiments, basically "kids who watch toku don't want a sentai mech as their one big gift for the year, they want a rider belt or an ultra changer", it seems to be a common sentiment Personally I think removing mech but replacing it with cgi fights makes some sense if they want to make really big changes but also don't want sentai and rider to get confused for each other I'm no authority tho, so like I said it's all hearsay until the press release Last edited by TheJaz; 12-04-2021 at 07:24 AM.. |

It's essentially replacing the large robots with small robots, right?

tho I was sort of unclear on if the CGI rangers look mechanical in any way when in their "other dimension" fights or whatever they were called? Maybe the last set of rumours/leaks touched on that and I forgot It seems like Rider action figures sell well, so maybe they're trying to create more of a figurine market for sentai and see how that does? Zenkaiger already felt a bit like that with the mechs being characters and all EDIT: this is the part of was forgetting about "The Legendary Avataro Gear Alters can summon mecha and allow the team to combine with those mecha" Last edited by TheJaz; 12-04-2021 at 08:14 AM.. |
