I like. I don't think it will be possible to repeat the success of Shin Godzilla, but I hope for a good film.

It's hard to tell from the little we see in the trailer, but I hope they capture the "guy in a suit" look that Shin did so well with its CGI!

Nah, Shin Godzilla was a thematic return to form but visually and plot-wise a very distinct story. This seems to literally take Godzilla back to his origin as an allegory or nuclear war at a time where the hardships and devastation wrought by it were still fresh. Also based on the glimpse he has a very classic/90's-fusion design that's not as abstract or nightmarish as Shin.

It also seems like they're shifting the time period here.
In the original film Godzilla surfaced some time after Japan's recovery from WWII iirc. Here it looks and sounds like he's surfacing literally right after the war itself.

I miss my chance to see Shin Godzilla on the big screen due to time and money back in 2016. This will be my chance to see another Japanese Godzilla film on the big screen.

I do dig that we're kind of taking Godzilla back to his days of being a force of nature. I love the heroic Goji, but his roots is as a walking warning of the dangers of nuclear war.

I think Toho also takes into account that there is also an active Hollywood Godzilla now. They will not be able to shoot a more spectacular kaiju fight, corny because of the difference in budgets. But they have another significant advantage: Japanese screenwriters don't go on strike.

Looks promising. While I do appreciate taking Godzilla back to his roots, between this and Shin Godzilla I do worry that they're going to get stuck in this holding pattern of only doing solo Godzilla movies (i.e. no other monsters, just miming the original). They can be some of the best in the series, but I also think this works when they are the exception, not the rule.
