Did this last year and had fun with it, so let's set this up again. This thread is for everyone to look back at the shows and movies of 2012 and discuss what stood out for them as being the most impressive for you.
A couple quick notes: Personally, for 2012 series I'm counting anything that aired a new episode this year: Gokaiger, Fourze, Garo MaikaiSenki, Gobusters, Akibaranger, Wizard, Power Rangers Super Samurai, and anything else that I don't remember or know about. For movies I'm counting anything that came out this year (all the Gokaiger films, Superhero Taisen, etc.) as well as anything that came out last year but wasn't available as a dvd/fansub until this year (Movie Wars Mega Max, OOO Wonderful, etc.). If you want to include stuff like Ultimatum or Gavan that hasn't been available for viewing outside of Japan yet, go ahead. Best New Show of 2012 Best New-to-You Show of 2012 (aka, what older series did you watch for the first time and absolutely fall in love with?) Best Rewatch of 2012 (for those who rewatched one or more shows they'd already seen before) Best Movie of 2012 Best Movie of 2012 that's not Movie Wars MegaMax Best Male Lead Character Best Female Lead Character Best Male Supporting Character Best Female Supporting Character Best Actor Best Actress And, to try and separate the last six from "zomg, ______ is soooo hot:" Biggest Toku Crush of 2012 Best Villain Best Returning Character (Gokaiger cameo, Rider movie appearance, cast of Garo, etc.) Best Suit Actor Best Writer Best Director Best Producer Best Visual Designer And some more miscellaneous categories: Best Hero Suit Design Best Monster Suit Design Best Weapon Best Vehicle/Mecha Best Fight Scene Best Dramatic Scene Best Song Best Piece of Merchandise Biggest Surprise And, because not everything in 2012 was sunshine, rainbows, and foodroids: Single Worst Thing in 2012 Tokusatsu So, let me know what you guys think, I'm curious to read the results. I have my own picks, of course, but I'll post them later to avoid cluttering this post. Last edited by Switchblade; 12-26-2012 at 03:54 PM.. |

Best New Show of 2012: Because my options are limited, it's gonna have to be Kamen Rider Wizard. However, I'm sticking with it (Unlike Gobuster), because I want it to be good, and it's slowly getting there...
Best New-to-You Show of 2012 (aka, what older series did you watch for the first time and absolutely fall in love with?): This is really, really difficult. While Geki wasn't new to me, I only just now finished it this year, but then there's Kamen Rider Blade, which was just amazing too. However, at the end of the day, I'll give it to Juken Sentai Gekiranger. It had a lovable cast, the best villains I've ever seen, a great story, and most importantly, it taught me that Sentai wasn't all style over substance. Best Rewatch of 2012 (for those who rewatched one or more shows they'd already seen before): Surprisingly, Power Rangers Dino Thunder, during Nick's marathon of it. I had forgotten how well written the Trent story arc was, despite minor flubs here and there. The cheezy dialogue, while still rough, wasn't as bad as trying to watch, say, MMPR or Ninja Storm again. Best Movie of 2012: Easy. Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Movie War Mega Max. Loved revisiting OOO. Loved seeing Ankh again. Loved the new guy and his very Imagin esque personality when controlled by the Future Medals. Loved the Legendary Seven showing up. I still think Gentarou's shallow (And entirely physical) attraction to Nadeshiko was horrible, but whatever. Him meeting up with Shotaro was hilarious. The climax wasn't good, but it wasn't bad enough to bring the rest of the movie down with it. Best Movie of 2012 that's not Movie Wars MegaMax: Umm...I'll give it to Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger Vs. Space Sheriff Gavan: The Movie. While I loathe Gokaiger, that doesn't mean it's terrible. It's series was disappointing, but the movies they put out tend to be rather enjoyable. Vs Gavan introduced me to a cool character, had great action scenes, and Kenji Ohba is quickly becoming one of my favorite Toku stars. Best Male Lead Character: Of 2012? Eiji in Mega Max. There's just too much to love (Yes, I know I'm biased because I'm an OOO nut and Eiji fanboy). Best Female Lead Character: I almost put Rinko here, but then I realized she's a horrible female lead. I'm gonna put Hina, in Super Hero Taisen. It was as if they written in Natsumi, but couldn't get her actress, so Hina was used instead. And it was good. Best Male Supporting Character: Ankh, in Mega Max. Never explaining where he came from or how he came back, and just slid right back into the groove of things. Love it. Best Female Supporting Character: Koyumi, because she's gonna die. And I will laugh. Best Actor: Sota Fukushi, Gentarou's actor. I love the energy and spirit he puts into his character. The constant smile and cheeriness clinches it. Best Actress: Yuko Takayama, Rinko's actor. While the character herself isn't anything special, she's trying damn it. She revels in the silliness of the character and she's just a joy to watch, even if the character is pointlessly shallow. Biggest Toku Crush of 2012: I don't think I had one for 2012... Best Villain: Diend in Super Hero Taisen. ...Just kidding It's actually Long, from Super Hero Taisen. I know he was just a lackey and nothing more in that movie, but I'm gauging past actions too, and he should've seriously been wrecking everyone's shit single handedly, instead of being Marvelous's bitch. Best Returning Character (Gokaiger cameo, Rider movie appearance, cast of Garo, etc.): The Goseigers making cameos. While I wanted to say the Gekirangers, they were just phantoms in recent movies, while the Goseigers at least had some character to them. Best Suit Actor: Unfortunately, I don't know suit actors, and none of them stand out to me. Next question. Best Writer: Naruhisa Arakawa, writer of Vs. Gavan. Best Director: I have no clue who, but whoever was director on Gen's death in Fourze. Best Producer: What does a producer do on a technical standpoint to warrant a "Best"? Best Visual Designer: The Visual designer on Wizard! If there's anything I can say about Wizard, it's that the enemy monster designs are great. And some more miscellaneous categories: Best Hero Suit Design: Honestly, Gobuters. I love those suits. Shame about the show, though. Best Monster Suit Design: Gavan Bootleg Best Weapon: I really loved Poseidon's Spear in Mega Max. Best Vehicle/Mecha: The WizarDragon, hands down. Best Fight Scene: This one is tough. So many of Fouze's fights at the end were awesome, but then there was just so much cool stuff to see in the movies, too. Toss up between Meteor Vs. Leo and Fourze Vs. Sagittarius Best Dramatic Scene: Gen's death, Tachibana pulling the plug on Meteor's powers. Loved that scene. Best Song: Super Hero Getter ~ Now and Forever Ver. Best Piece of Merchandise: SHF Fourze Base States Biggest Surprise: Fourze's ending not sucking. And, because not everything in 2012 was sunshine, rainbows, and foodroids: Single Worst Thing in 2012 Tokusatsu: Kamen Rider x Super Sentai: Super Hero Taisen. It's a title of LIES! It was Decade vs. Super Sentai and GokaiRed vs. Kamen Rider.

Sentai, how are Doc and Ahim supporting characters if Moune and Gosei Knight are lead? (Matrixbeast don't answer this )
Best New Show of 2012: Akibaranger Best New-to-You Show of 2012: Garo Best Rewatch of 2012: Power Rangers Zeo Best Movie of 2012: Megamax (199 Heroes came out subbed last year so I'm not counting it) Best Male Lead Character: Nobou Akagi/Akiba Red Best Female Lead Character: Mitsuki Aoyagi/Akiba Blue Best Male Supporting Character: Shun Best Female Supporting Character: Hakase Best Actor: Sota Fukushi Best Actress: Kyoko Hinami Biggest Toku Crush of 2012: Kyoko Hinami Best Villain: Enter Best Returning Character: Tsukasa's Hair Best Hero Suit Design: All three Akibarangers Best Monster Suit Design: Messiah (first version) Best Weapon: Barizun Sword Best Vehicle/Mecha: Go-Buster Ace Best Fight Scene: Mecha-wise: Go-Busters episode 44, suit-wise I'm undecided Best Dramatic Scene: The Fourze Finale Best Song: Machine Itasha Best Piece of Merchandise: Figuarts Akiba Red Biggest Surprise: Go-Busters getting MUCH better Single Worst Thing in 2012 Tokusatsu: The lack of screen time for the Samurai Shogun Mode I wish I could answer more on the production side of things.

EDIT: For the record, I didn't count shows that I started last year. Otherwise, almost all of my answers would be the same as last year.
Best New Show of 2012 There's really not been that many interesting shows that started this year, so I'm just going with a tie between Wizard and Gobusters. Best New-to-You Show of 2012 Agito. I've already talked enough about this. Best Kamen Rider ever made. Best Rewatch of 2012 RPM. Even better than I remembered. Best Movie of 2012 Gokaiger vs Gavan. It wasn't subbed until this year, so I'm counting it. Best Movie of 2012 that's not Movie Wars MegaMax Still Gokaiger vs Gavan, but only barely. Best Male Lead Character Beet J Stag. The J is for Juicy. ...Wait, do Buddyroids have genders? Best Female Lead Character N/A unless Gokaiger counts. Best Male Supporting Character N/A unless Gokaiger counts. Best Female Supporting Character N/A unless Gokaiger counts. Best Actor Enter. Best Actress N/A unless Gokaiger counts. Biggest Toku Crush of 2012 Unless Gokaiger counts, Nao Nagasawa. Had to change that after Switchblade reminded me Daimajin Kanon existed. Best Villain Enter. Best Returning Character I guess Gai, just because he gave me one of the few funny moments in that piece of crap called SuperHero Taisen. Best Suit Actor Whoever is in J's suit. Best Writer Best Producer Best Visual Designer Hell if I know any of their name. Best Director Koichi Sakamoto. Yes, I know someone's name. Why? Because he's just that good. Best Hero Suit Design I assume this is new designs, so Wizard's 4 base forms. Best Monster Suit Design Esaseroid is the first thing to come to mind. Best Weapon The daggers the Gobusters use, I guess. There's not a lot in ways of weapons. Best Vehicle/Mecha Ace, and Toei is aware of it's awesomeness. Best Fight Scene There's no way I can't say the last episode of Gokaiger here. Best Dramatic Scene Most of the drama was to cheesy this year. With more time, I could probably find something from Garo, but it never quite topped the first series in terms of drama. Best Song "Waga Na wa Garo" aka Garo Makai Senki's 2nd intro. Best Piece of Merchandise You'll get my answer to that later. Biggest Surprise I guess the reveal of a 3rd Garo series. Single Worst Thing in 2012 Tokusatsu Akibaranger! ...I'm kidding (kind of). SuperHero Taisen is garbage and by far the worst thing of the year. Last edited by Blade Raider; 12-26-2012 at 04:02 PM.. |

Best Dramatic Scene: Matrix sparked my memory about Fourze. And it's more than just that scene. Those whole two episodes where Ryuusei has to decide to betray his new friends to save an old one, Gentaro's death, the coming of Cosmic States. And the final two episodes. So much. And the episodes with Gemini, those too.. So alot of Fourze goes in this catagory.
And Zeo: Because I am Sentai and I say so |

Okay, so here are mine.
Best New Show of 2012: Garo Makai Senki. It was new Garo, of course it takes first place. Best New-to-You Show of 2012: This is probably the hardest one for me since I've seen a lot of great older shows this year: Jetman, Dairanger, Dekaranger, Kamen Rider X, Hero Yoshihiko, etc. But in the end I have to go with Daimajin Kanon, which just won me over completely from start to finish. Best Rewatch of 2012: Don't really have one. The only show I rewatched this year was Decade and I didn't finish it past the Hibiki arc. Best Movie of 2012: MegaMax, no contest. It probably wasn't 100% perfect, but it's about as close to that as one could possibly get. Best Movie of 2012 that's not Movie Wars MegaMax: 199 Heroes. Even with the drag factor of the Goseigers it was a really fun movie and it was great seeing some of the older actors hanging out together - the bits with Oume, Ryou, and Umeko were some of my favorite parts of the whole thing. Best Male Lead Character: This is another tough one. I'm split between Captain Marvelous and Kouga. I think I'll go with Kouga on this one just because he finally manned up and kissed Kaoru this year and it was about goddamn time. Best Female Lead Character: Misaki Kanon from Daimajin Kanon. She started off as soul-crushingly introverted and depressed, but watching her gradually recover her real self over the course of the show was just a joy to watch. Best Male Supporting Character: Melub from The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King's Castle. Watching him unveil the week's new spell was a highlight of every episode, not to mention that bit when they're fighting the archer and he's narrating what they're all watching happen. Hilarious. Best Female Supporting Character: Again, there was a new Garo series this year. Kaoru may not have had as much to do this time, but I still love the character and was really happy to have her back. Best Actor: There are a lot of good arguments out there for Sota Fukushi as Gentaro and I can't argue. The sheer range of emotions he had to represent and how great he was at them, he definitely gets the nod here. Best Actress: Karin Ogino from Akibaranger. Her character was effing crazy, but she still managed to pull it off believably and, when needed, put some real emotional depth into it. Biggest Toku Crush of 2012: I think Yuko Takayama is really pretty, but this year I have to give it to Nao Nagasawa. I know that's not a new discovery for most people, but this year it finally clicked for me. Best Villain: There weren't a lot of strong villains this year, but even in a better year I think Enter would stand out as being really awesome. Best Returning Character: Rei from Garo. In a big change from the first series he got to headline a lot of episodes in Makai Senki, pretty much elevating him to co-lead status. Several of those were among Makai Senki's most memorable episodes, too. I don't know a lot about the production stuff, but: Best Writer: Naruhisa Arakawa, favorite toku writer ever. Best Director: Keita Amemiya Best Producer: I don't remember his name, but the guy behind W, Fourze, and Mega Max - the one who handles all the Foundation X stories. Best Visual Designer: Keita Amemiya Best Hero Suit Design: Kamen Rider Wizard. Love that costume. Best Monster Suit Design: Again, there was a Garo series this year. Best Weapon: Going with the Gokai Saber/Gokai Pistol combo again. Best Vehicle/Mecha: Go-Buster Ace, that thing is still really awesome. Best Fight Scene: The entire order of the Makai Knights vs. Ganon and her demon minions. Holy crapballs, that was epic - even with the lame generic Knight CGI suits. Best Dramatic Scene: The end of the training camp flashback in Makai Senki (I'm not 100% sure if that aired in 2011 or 2012, but I'm still picking it). I will not even begin to spoil it, but daaaaaamn. Best Song: Sing Your Heart Out, the fantastic opening theme to Daimajin Kanon. Best Piece of Merchandise: I didn't get much this year due to funding problems, but I'd probably go with the SIC Kiwami Tamashii Side Basshar anyway. Biggest Surprise: Another Gokaiger movie? With Kamen Riders!? And Decade is back!?!? That sounds so awesome!! There's no way they can mess that up! Single Worst Thing in 2011 Tokusatsu: Oh. |

Oh, I'm going to have trouble with some of these.
Best New Show of 2012 Kamen Rider Fourze, hands down. One of my favorite superheroes in the first place, so his show has to win 2012 for me. Best New-to-You Show of 2012 (aka, what older series did you watch for the first time and absolutely fall in love with?) Tough choice between the first half of Kamen Rider Hibiki and Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger. I'll preemptively give it to Gekiranger, but that might just be because I finished it recently and it's sticking to me. Best Rewatch of 2012 (for those who rewatched one or more shows they'd already seen before) Fourze. Watched it again within a month from its final episode. Call me obsessive. Best Movie of 2012 Didn't like any movies this year. Best Movie of 2012 that's not Movie Wars MegaMax Ibid. Best Male Lead Character Masato Jin, if he counts as a lead. Otherwise, Sakuta Ryuusei. Best Female Lead Character I'd go with Hina if she counts from Superhero Taisen or OOO Wonderful. Best Male Supporting Character LOVE WARRIOR DAIMONJI SHUN Best Female Supporting Character Ran Kurokei from Fourze. Best Actor Tie between Masato Wada and Sota Fukushi. That's some hardcore character dedication. Best Actress Karin Ogino. Again, great character dedication, for multiple personas. Biggest Toku Crush of 2012 No, thanks. Best Villain If we can count stuff that's new to us, Kurojishi Riox100. Otherwise, the Virgo Zodiart. Best Returning Character (Gokaiger cameo, Rider movie appearance, cast of Garo, etc.) Hidari Shotaro in MegaMax. Best Suit Actor Whoever played Kamen Rider Meteor gets my recognition. Best Writer Kazuki Nakashima. That's feel-good writing if I've ever seen any. Best Director Best Producer Best Visual Designer Gotta skip these, not sure. And some more miscellaneous categories: Best Hero Suit Design Shogun Mode from Power Rangers Super Samurai. Best Monster Suit Design Cygnus from Kamen Rider Fourze. Best Weapon Barizun Sword. Best Vehicle/Mecha I'll say Great Gobuster. Best Fight Scene Final battle scene from Fourze, right before the graduation ceremony. (The one where Gentaro does a traditional rider kick.) Best Dramatic Scene Hiromu convinces his sister that his fate is to be Red Buster. Best Song This one's really tough. I'll whittle it down to Fourze Henshin!, Beginning of Fate and Bounce Back. Best Piece of Merchandise SH Figuarts Fourze Base States. Biggest Surprise Wizard actually being palpable and not a bunch of grimdark fantasy guff. And, because not everything in 2012 was sunshine, rainbows, and foodroids: Single Worst Thing in 2012 Tokusatsu Superhero Taisen. |
