TimeRobo Alpha
I'm probably going to be a bit biased when it comes to the Timeranger mechas since Time Force is, to my recollection the first Power Ranger show I had any major exposure to. Still though, I think one thing you can say about Timeranger was that it tried to do some really unique things with its mechas and the Time Jets are a perfect example of that. 5 jets that can combine in 3 different ways, all of which are distinct in terms of shape, size to even the colour. There hasn't been a Sentai mecha since that has tried to do the same thing the Time Jets did which thus makes them stand out. TimeRobo Alpha is considered to be the base formation and thus the actual main mecha of the show. As the main mecha, I think he looks great. Compared to Beta which we will get to later, Alpha has a stockier frame with his wider shoulders and larger legs. He very much looks like he was made for more direct combat. His more centralized colour scheme helps to mitigate this feeeling of him looking like a combination of various things, which was something you could tell with other main mechas. Granted I didn't mind that but it helps make Alpha unique. The larger emphasis on silver, something all the Timeranger mechas share, also gives him a bit more of a futuristic look. And I must say, Press Blizzard is a cool finisher. TimeRobo Beta The second formation of the Time Jets, TimeRobo Beta. I really am amazed that despite the components being the same, Beta is almost completely different from Alpha in every way, right down to even the colours. With that said though, I think most people will agree that Beta isn't as good as Alpha. His design just doesn't seem as well put together as Alpha was. Beta is supposed to be the speed form, more quick and agile than Alpha. The thinner legs and forearms do invoke this but then you get to those massive shoulders which look like they could really restrict mobility. The upper body in general looks kinda heavy which again conflicts with his intended purpose. Despite all of that, I'll admit, I still kinda like him. While his design has issues, I can't fault him too much for it since due to the nature of his gimmick and how complicated it is, one form was probably gonna look a little worse than the others. Even still, I think he looks okay, plus that sort of triple spire sillhoutte going on with his nosecone head and the shoulders is quite unique. He has a very nice mix of blue and silver in his colours. The whole aspect of the Time Flyer turning into his weapon is also quite interesting. TimeJet Ganma The third formation of the Time Jets but instead of a robot, it's instead a massive jet. TimeJet Ganma is basically just Icarus Haken 2.0. I mean seriously, they are almost exactly the same. That isn't exactly a bad thing mind you. Icarus Haken was already a cool design and this is just a futuristic version of that. Providus So who thought that the best idea to send things into a time portal was to have a giant mecha punch them into it? Providus looks okay. He very much has a worker/builder design to him, not as futuristic as the other mechas which makes sense considering what his intended purpose is supposed to be. His whole aspect of being a non-combat mecha is unique, so while Providus is not that spectacular in terms of design, he still stands out compared to other Sentai Mechas. Also him having one arm larger than the other is funny to me. Time Shadow Time Shadow is pretty great looking. It accomplishes what Beta was trying to do of being a sleeker and more agile looking mecha. Granted, part of the reason for that is because his alternate form is essentially a stealth bomber which is something we haven't seen before. I really dig the colour scheme of the robot form. The major use of black emphasizes that sort of the stealth design he has and the all the yellow accents look really nice. The arms blades are pretty cool as well as the head, which looks like a cross between a bird and fighter pilot helmet. It being completely AI controlled is a pretty unique aspect, though LinerBoy already beats in being the first one to do it. TimeRobo Shadow Alpha/Beta I'm putting both combinations between TimeRobo and Time Shadow in their own section since they're sorta similar to each other and it would be more interesting to compare them. While TimeRobo Shadow combines in the almost the exact same way in either form, there are little differences in both forms which I like and they suit the theme both forms are going for. Alpha was more focused on power and thus suited for direct combat, so his combination has part of the wings become shoulder cannons. Beta on the another was built for speed and thus suited for more evasive combat, so his combination keeps the wings full as is. Then there's the Pro Divider which becomes a gun for Beta and a sword for Alpha, again suiting the weapon both forms commonly use. The new chest plate and head visor being different on both of them is a nice touch and helps to differentiate the two. As far as which one I like more, I actaully have to give it to Shadow Beta. Maybe it's because I saw it first but the combination with TimeShadow helps bulk out Beta in certain areas, making his design more consistent with itself. I also like his twin horn visor more than Alpha's single horn visor. V-Rex Robo It's a little weird that after having completely futuristic looking mechas, the last mecha introduced would be based on something from the past. I mean thematically it still fits and helps distinguish TimeFire from the other Timerangers, so I can't really nitpick about it too much especially since V-Rex looks awesome. Considering the last dinosaur based mecha was all the way back in Zyuranger, V-Rex is a pretty substantial upgrade from all the ones back then. I mean it's a mechanical T-Rex with laser cannons on its back, how is that not cool. V-Rex Robo is equally as cool looking. It's armed the teeth with a missle launcher for an arm, a rocket fist on the other, and having literal laser cannons for shoulders. Also there's TimeRobo Alpha riding on V-Rex's back. Not exactly the most creative of combos but I can't really say that a giant mecha riding on the back of a mechanical dinosaur isn't cool looking. I know this one took a while come up. Life has been getting pretty hectic lately especially with school and such, so expect the frequency of these to be a bit slower than usual for the next few months. |

I really like the two mode gimmick TimeRobo has, but I have to be honest and admit that I've never really cared much for the overall aesthetics of the TimeRanger mechs. I can't really put my finger on what it is about them, but they've always left me kinda cold.

I really love all Timeranger Mecha. I love futuristic design and all mecha has time machine functions.
Its really unique when Time Fire are only Timeranger member who has dinosaur-themed mecha (V-Rex Robo). The other Timerangers has jet mecha. This really similar to Gokai Silver as only Gokaiger member who also has dinosaur-themed mecha (GoZyuJin). I feel some of Timeranger Mecha is really similar to Jetman mecha: - Time Jet Gamma is similar to Icarus Haken - Time Robo Alpha is similar to Jet Icarus - Time Shadow is similar to Jet Garuda - Providus is similar to Tetra Boy. I like the idea of having 2 different mecha made from the same 5 pieces, but I always felt Beta was incredibly lacking. Nothing about it really conveyed speed, from the large spire shoulders, to the huge upper body, to the not at all aerodynamic head design.
Alpha is cool, and Gamma is alright. Time Shadow is pretty neat, and actually does convey speed, but the combinations I really don't like. The feet combine horribly, the main mecha was always so stocky that you could never see the wings, and I think both helmets look silly. I do like the chest piece, though. V-Rex is cool. Shame about his toy. Don't care about the punching bot.

Timerobo is pretty much a better take on the concept Jetman was using. The same applies to Carranger and Turboranger. I remember I was not used to seeing the 3 people robo for the next 2 seasons.

For me Time Robo Alpha and Beta feel very utilitarian which must be due to a good percentage of the color scheme being silver and black. I do love the idea of two bots in one and Time Jet Gamma is an awesome Icarus Haken 2.0.
As for Time Shadow I think it is a nice addition mitigating the blandness of Time Robo Alpha and Beta when it combines with either form. Providus is a fun little idea being a big component of the launch pad. V-Rex Robo is downright awesome and feels like Guardian Beast Tyrannosaurus and Ryuseioh was blended into the second coming of Dragon Caesar.

Time Robo Alpha is my best pick.
Honestly, Timeranger checks off almost everything I want in Super Sentai mecha. You have 5 jets that combine into one jet or one of two robots. The mecha forms do not belie the fact it's made up of 5 jets, either...very retro design. The only missing is a carrier but I can let that go if everything else lines up nicely on the 80's Super Sentai nostalgia train. Still waiting for a return of the "retro" Sentai designs. There's been some slight nods recently but I want to see them go all in again. |
