Good question man, though I will say this, I thought the toys were a LOT better than the localization as Syber Squad. I've been meaning to check out a subbed version of Gridman because I did not like the Syber Samurai dub at all!
Loved the designs and the toys always looked good. |

Loved the designs and the toys always looked good. The major problem though is the editing and the creation of the show in general. It's lazy. There's quite a few continuity errors. The single largest issue is footage reuse. There's about 6 kaiju designs, and most of the battles are THE EXACT same footage either flipped or colored slightly differently. Was Gridman this way? Stock footage for transformation/special attacks is expected, but this is entire fights. There have even been a few scenes in the real world that were simply duplicated. The crowning achievement of laziness is an entire 5 minute scene that is the same at the beginning of two different episodes with M(r)s. Starkey (the lunch lady) and two girls. At any rate, the DX toys are phenomenal. Wish mine weren't in storage at the moment. |

No. Gridman is fourteen episodes shorter than Superhuman Samurai and many episodes were padded out by reusing monster fights for extra action. Reusing actual American sequences so glaringly is a hilarious new one to me, may have to get the DVDs just to see for myself.
That said, there's way more than six kaiju in the series. Some are revived, but there's a couple dozen unique monsters at the bare minimum.

I remember the Samurai Trooper toy line was kinda weird. Rather than fully posable figures they are some weird spring joint gimmick make the characters look really bloated. The only one I had from that toyline was the power up Ryo.
Btw theres another toy line made by Takara in a similar vain at the time but with smaller toys callled Kikou Keisatsu (Armoured Police) Metal Jack with humanoid figures that combine with vehicles/animals/robots to become robots. Note how Red Jack Armour's face looks kinda like Gridman's. Especially in the box art.

Got my Ultra Act Gridman in (Took me a while eh?)!
Overall they look really cool. But Thunder Gridman is the weakest. Those damned legs dont want to stay connected. Also if you use the 'show accurate' helmet-over-gridman's-head look the heads are hilariously large. also my Thunder Gridman has one broken part. The 'arm' that connects the shoulder pad to the backpack came stressed and the ball joint wouldnt move at all. But on the other one its actually a bit loose so I wonder why one of them was stressed right out of the box?? Overall great looking figures. Shame the better armour up set is a Web exclusive. |
