The biggest issue I have with Winspector is that all of the characters sans Bikel are pretty one dimensional. We NEVER get to learn why or how Ryoma was picked to be Fire.

That's a shame. Personally, that never really affects my enjoyment of something, so I think I still might enjoy it, but I see why one wouldn't like it.

This is on the list of things I will never own due to price. The price of Bikel, the price of Walter, and the set itself.
I'm still surprised this even got made, but I guess they really wanted to see if Metal Heroes could replace the gap Sentai left for Figuarts. The one aspect about this set that does bother me is the badge. Slightly sloppy paint in the photos aside- I really think that it (along with the appropriate hands) should have been included with Ryoma in the first place. |

I wanted to think a couple years ago when the Winspectors started being released and the Janperson & Kabutack prototypes were shown off at Tamashii Nations, that Metal Heroes really were going to fill that gap. And while we've definitely gotten a lot in the last couple years with the Winspectors & the two new Gavan Renewals, I still don't know if we'll get more. It's certainly the golden age for that franchise right now. So who knows what could happen at this point. Quote:
My guess is that they did not have the luxury to do so since the metal hero department went over-budget with Jiban the previous year they had to take a more minimal approach in terms of production(thankfully, the show was a hit that year and toys sold like hot cakes while Fiveman was sadly bogged in mediocrity despite some cool elements to it).
And Yeah Jiban ran far over budget but hey you know, it's the most elaborate of the Roboco-esque heroes. It's a great watch all in all.

The set was indeed very pricey at the time of release but has since dropped drastically. Thus ensuring I'll probably never seen the Winsquad, Winchaser, or Brian. But yes I was surprised as well. Wayyyyyyy back when in the old days of Megahouse and their Toei Action Works line, they actually released a massive Winspector 3-pack. It included all the Multi-packs, the cuffs, the Gigastreamer combinations, literally every accessory that was in this figuarts version and all of the ones that came with the individual figures as well. That set used to fetch around 20,000-30,000 yen normally. But it's dropped in price in response to these newer updates as well.

He wasn't drive by any special trauma in his backstory, though we do find out about one in the end. He simply was the perfect candidate for the team. It doesn't matter at all why he was selected by Masaki, simply that he is the captain, he's a good man, and he will do anything to save others. That's the core of his character through and through. And Yeah Jiban ran far over budget but hey you know, it's the most elaborate of the Roboco-esque heroes. It's a great watch all in all.

And they certainly did. Aside from the dramatic vehicle chase in episode 1 and a few other spots of mass destruction later on, they were able to tell compelling one off stories with very modest effects and budgets. Of course the success and profitability of Winspector is what ultimately led to Solbrain being quite a bit more showy. And Winspectors immense popularity is what brought the trio back for the crossover.

The vintage toys are excellent, both the DX Winsquad and the Winchaser are just fantatsic and quality made toys. They even scale well with the Figuarts today. I have the DX Winbadge as well and it's a really fun interactive device. And while I don't own any of the weapons I've been searching for the Daytric M2 for a while as it again is a very nicely made toy that doesn't come up for sale often. This was just a great toyline and it really allowed them to expand when Solbrain came along. That's why we not only got a big DX transforming & Motorized Soldozer, but also multiple large scale vehicles and even a base. They pulled out all the stops.

Say, they never had Brendan as an exclusive right? The first time I saw Winspector it was that two-parter with Red Flash/Jin's actor as a guest role and it was what got me hooked on this show many years ago.
