Since I didn't see a Godzilla thread yet, I thought I'd start one.
And in reference to the tread title, I turn 17 in 5 months and have been trying to get into Godzilla, but I haven't been able to find any movies or anything on the 'net, so I thought maybe some of you guys experienced with this stuff could recommend me stuff to watch and where to buy them from (And what releases, because I know some Tokusatsu DVDs released here can be pretty Eeeeeeh in quality) The last Godzilla movie I remember watching was a fairly new one, but all I really remember was it having scientists working with a newborn creature of some sort...do any of you have any idea which one that may be? |

^ Possibly Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2. Made in 1993, got a US DVD release around 2004.
If you're 17 and you like this genre it is absolutely required to see the Japanese cut of the first Godzilla. There is no genre without that. And standing all on it's own it is a fantastic sci-fi movie and movie in general, which is not true of most of its legion of imitators. I'll make a few more recommendations from the list of Godzilla films readily available on DVD in the states. General high quality: Mothra vs. Godzilla, Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack Old-school cheese: Monster Zero, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla New-school cheese: Godzilla: Final Wars Also, Netflix Streaming is trickling out Godzilla films from the Classic Media DVD collection, including the 1954 original cut of Godzilla. |

If you're into older stuff, the original, either the Japanese Gojira or Americanized King of the Monsters is a great place to start. From there, the Showa films I'd recommend are vs. The Thing, vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla.
If you're a stickler for what's new and shiny, however, it has to be Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. |

If you want a good modern Godzilla movie, I'd check out Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. It's the movie that got me into Godzilla. Also, it's an oldy but a goodie, the original Gojira is still one of the best.

I would recommend NOT starting with Godzilla's Revenge.
Other then that shitpiece, you can start anywhere you wish, they're all GOLD to me.

Which one is 'Revenge', I get the titles confused sometimes? Is that the one where the kid dreams it all up? That one sucks.

Definetly avoid Revenge & Vs. Megalon as well.
As someone said Watch the original and once you understand it's message watch the American Cut. (The american cut is actually quite exceptional....but it throws you into the deep end of the pool emotionally speaking right at the start) My wife has seen the Japanese cut several times with me and understood the film....I tried to show her the American cut but we had to turn it off because she was crying within the first 3 minutes. Showa Era: Vs. King Ghidora, Monster Zero, Vs. Sea Monster (That chick is SO HOT!), Son of Godzilla, Destroy all monsters, Vs. Hedora, Vs. Gigan, Vs. Mechagodzilla. Also Terror of Mechagodzilla....but make sure you have the most recent release...because everyother release cuts about 30 seconds at the end...and the ending makes NO SENSE without it. Hesei Era: All of them. but especially Vs. Biollante & Vs. Space Godzilla (That last one gets a lot of undeserved flack) Millenium Era:..... Ehh, Final Wars....I guess.
