So I'm currently in the middle of writing feature for a UK magazine about Ultraman, but despite looking around I can't seem to get a clear picture on the dispute between Tsuburaya and Chaiyo - or at least the point its at now anyway.
I understand where the dispute originated, how it originally gave Chaiyo international rights to the first six Ultra Series and then how Chaiyo were subsequently prohibited from creating their own Ultras, but after that its a bit of a blur. I've read that in 2008 it was ruled that Sompote Saengduenchai wasn't involved in the creation of Ultraman and thus Chaiyo had to stop profitting from Ultraman, but then in 2009 Tsuburaya had to pay Chaiyo damages for violating their overseas copyrights? Are those two court cases just two separate issues of a bigger thing or am I missing something here. Apologies if I'm asking stupid questions - copyright disputes aren't really in my area of expertise If anyone has any more information or links about the dispute and where exactly it is these days, I'd be very grateful! Thanks in advance!

Honestly I wish I knew more about this whole mess. The first I've heard about this was on Akibaranger's TV Tropes page, under characters.
Then again copyright's never been a strong point of mine so I'm as lost as you are Zeo. |
