I notice that most of top-tier Kamen Rider shows are Sci-Fi like Den-O, Gaim, Ex-Aid, Build and potentially Zero-One and that’s lead me to this question
HOW COME SCI-FI WORK FOR KAMEN RIDER BUT SUPERNATURAL DON’T? Think about it. Every time they do Supernatural on Kamen Rider, most of them tend to be mix bag or even the worst one like Hibiki, Kiva, Wizard and especially Ghost. I mean a supernatural Kamen Rider have a lot of potential and yet most of time, those shows are generally held in low regard with Ghost being the punching bag. So guys, can you give your answer on why Sci-Fi Kamen Rider shows tend to be beloved while Supernatural Kamen Rider shows are not? BTW, I do prefer Sci-Fi over fantasy but I don’t mind the idea of supernatural Kamen Rider..... it just why we haven’t got a Supernatural Kamen Rider show that is held in high regard? I mean, technically Gaim was supernatural.
I don't think it's purely because of their theme but also because of who's writing the show. The theme can play as a factor too tho, idk where I heard this but I do recall a report or article saying that toys based on technology or recognizable objects are far more popular than magic-y toys. |

It's a recurring trend in KR but it more depends on the writer on how they run the series to be honest. And coincidentally, the supernatural ones are run by the less dedicated writer.
And probably because it seems that supernatural theme are more "asspull-y", that there are no limits on what supernatural can achieve, while technology/sci-fi are limited by what the mechanicals and tools can achieve at that time and the drive to constantly improve them. There are acclaimed supernatural series like (CMIIW) for example Kuuga(dunno if supernatural?), Agito, Blade. |

There isn't really anything wrong with supernatural elements, though. Just because some of the more disliked Rider series happened to share that in common doesn't mean it's the reason.

Pretty sure the problems with the more supernatural Riders lie more on production. The concepts are great, and hell, I can even see some real good potential in Ghost (that was unfortunately missed), but again it comes down to production (writers, location filming, budget, actor motivation, etc).

Wait...what about Kuuga or Agito? Those two are generally considered to be among the best in the franchise's history. And I personally loved Hibiki too, though I guess that's more personal taste.
One could argue that Ryuki has supernatural/horror overtones as well. |

Ghost and Kiva need better writing and direction in my opinion. Both of those shows could have been awesome, but never lived up to their cool premise. Ghost was a cliche storm and broke me from Kamen Rider for a long time. Kiva tries too many ideas with the time skips but came off as a hot mess in my opinion.

Sci-Fi and tech are just more popular in Japan. Any excuse to sell a robot figure is a good enough excuse since it will sell.
Series with supernatural elements can work if the series is created with that in mind, but for something as formulaic as Sentai and KR, sci-fi just makes more sense.

If you count alchemy and homonculi (and I mean the fantasy kind, not historically accurate alchemy which was just chemistry before chemistry) as supernatural, then OOO is a supernatural rider too, and from what I hear that season was very successful. Just like Gaim, the riders' equipment looked like technology and was developed by scientists, but the source of their powers was supernatural.
I don't think the coincidence of a few disliked seasons being supernatural means supernatural doesn't work for Kamen Rider. Especially since with Hibiki, Kiva and Ghost, there's other clear reasons why they weren't good (Hibki was supposed to be its own show but got adapted into Kamen Rider AND had a major staff change halfway through, Kiva got too ambitious with the multiple timelines and the main suit weighed the actor down, and Ghost blew the budget on suits and rushed through the first half of its plot too quickly). Also, even the seasons that are purely sci-fi have technology so advanced it might as well be magic. Nothing in W, for example, is based on real science. |
