All this talk about fansubs makes me wish we got an simulcast of the show especially since there releasing the toys in America. And it's like what the point of the toys if where not getting the show along with it?

Shirowe may seem weak due to his early death here, but we should remember that this is a DGP finale and he placed third out of 32 participants. This guy must've kicked a lot of a** offscreen!
Michinaga's kind of mean, but I respect how he's honest about his selfish motivation and willing to call out others on their hypocrisy for trying to appear more heroic than they actually are, when everybody's in the DGP for their own desires. Excited to see how his rivalry with Ace will play out. Neon is cute and I can totally understand why her fans, including Sara, find her so endearing for wanting to enjoy a normal life as a popular streamer, without the inconvenience of her family's high profile. And she's a love interest for Ace? Intriguing! Keiwa is pretty cynical for someone who wishes for world peace. I can relate a little to his struggle to find work, since it's real competitive out there, but maybe that halfhearted attitude is the reason why nobody's taking him seriously. I mean, he doesn't even like Neon's channel! True to his bio, our protagonist Ace is very mysterious. As the winner of the DGP, he wished for a world that looks identical to the one that just ended, so his true desire must be something else. He's clearly a professional in the field though, showing skilled precision with the Magnum Shooter 40X. Geats becomes the first Rider since Geiz to use form changes in the first episode of a Rider show (not counting Revi's chubby legs), which means he's also the first Rider to set that precedent for the Reiwa Era, like how Decade set it for the Heisei Era! Anybody else find it a little annoying how Keiwa and Neon, who were civilians trying to survive an apocalypse, feel inclined to call out the animal motif of every Rider that shows up? I hope that doesn't become a recurring thing. It's nice that the reset is established as part of the plot from the start, so we'll see that inevitable reset ending coming this time. It feels good to be excited about watching KR again, after Revice left me feeling disappointed. It's too early to judge Geats yet, but I hope it can maintain the quality of this episode, it was a lot of fun. My only concern going forward is a rumor I heard about a lack of secondary writers. I wouldn't want Takahashi to get burned out again, unless Takebe is just that confident she can bring out his talent. Quote:
At least Revolve On is self-inflicted, so you don't have to worry about getting "tickled" from behind.

Maybe I live long enough to see it happening someday. Quote:
But yeah, if you're the ones releasing subtitles then of course you're much closer to the entire audience, to the point where when said audience is being overly negative about your work, stepping back is a relatable decision. |

I actually think that's the reason why. If you were one of the lucky few to survive the attack, then you're probably good enough to be a Rider.
Granted, that completely ignores the fact that most characters that survived did so because Riders opted to save them for the points, but hey, every game has it's flaws

That was probably my favorite first episode since Build, and might even be my favorite first episode in the whole franchise! Takahashi delivered on a crazy romp, intriguing mysteries, and interesting characters right off the bat in an absolutely packed first episode. I'm just sitting here grinning like an idiot, I loved it that much. If I were to nitpick anything, I'd say Keiwa's moment of despair was a bit much and there was too much CGI, but I had so much fun I don't really care.
I went with GenmCorp subs. I really do like their style of subtitles, but I'm pretty afraid their schedule will slip like they have in the past...

I loved them! Would be really nice to have them back!
I would hope for either Excite or Over-Time then. I mean beggars can't be choosers, I fully support these people spending their free time doing what they want instead of putting out subtitles for me, I can survive a whole year on scraps if I need to, but I would definitely wish for someone familiar to put out subs. Also here's a twitter thread on who is and isn't subbing Geats

Not satisfied with what's before, I'd decide to watch a Rider show that's currently running again in Geats.
So the first episode sets up things rather quick. Outside of a handful of characters getting to know about the gimmicks and threats, it's already set in the ongoing Desire Grand Prix with many things already happened, at least basic ones, like Jamato threats, multiple Riders fighting for points (only Keiwa and Neon are non-Riders at that point, and they become one at the end of episode) and even one dying (Takeshi Goutokuji/Shirowe), a boss in Fortress, the world in peril due to the war, and even a winner of previous DGP in Ace. The quickness is quite successful in adding tension for the viewers, at least me. The episode seems to focus not on the primary Rider here, which was also done in some previous series like Faiz. But it's done on Keiwa Sakurai, the established secondary Rider instead. He's the one established as a do-gooder who would put others above himself and have noble goal of making the world better place, the one with Kamen Rider sensibility. It extends to his sister Sara to point out that he'd donate the money he won at lottery instead of using it. It's not that character types like him are inherently flat or one-dimensional of only wanting to do good and nothing else, it can be a lack of effort from writers to flesh those types out, but that seems to be Keiwa's problem, to get himself failed in a job interview due to having no drive for himself. At least that is addressed in-universe as his struggle, but at least I'd want for Keiwa to be able to get personal drive, while also not compromising his ideals. Despite Keiwa's disinterest to Neon Kurama, or at least her channel, she's the one who got paired with him at the survival they have to go through. As what's said in preview, she's a rich and beautiful celebrity streamer (... in contrast to Genta) that wants to live a normal life, which is shown in her bodyguards trying to forcibly take her home. What she escaped was her bodyguards, but she seems to be still streaming and interacting with fans while going outside home (as a way to escape her family's obligations), so that seems to mean that she won't 100% leave celebrity world, but more of being free while running it. She seems to be decent for a good amount of time, but can get irritated quickly like pinching Keiwa for confirming if it's a dream or not. Michinaga Azuma/Buffa seems to be so far, the most morally lacking individual in this series (of course it'd not be him for whole series). Other than how he's someone who's only out for himself, and would do anything to accomplish his goal, without regard of the consequences, he's also someone who projects his seemingly dim view of humanity (or dunno if it's only DGP contestants) to everyone else, like accusing Takeshi as only making himself look good by saving people. It's something that can be pulled in real life by for scummy people to think that anyone who acts like a decent human being has some sort of ulterior motives, of which, it's more like about how it's them who would certainly never help any one without some self serving reason. Tsumuri so far is only giving Desire Drivers and ID Cores to who she thinks are worthy. Not much that can be said about her right now, like what's her criteria to be chosen as a Kamen Rider, what is she aiming by choosing so many people, etc. But for me, she seems suspicious so far (is she the main heroine?), not unlike... Sid from Gaim, both plunging people into war by giving them powers. And for the primary Rider, Ace Ukiyo, he's someone outwardly extremely confident, with constant smirk, and unflappable nature facing any challenges (or... there are no challenges for him). While he has some degree of arrogance, dunno how mean to others he'd be for the following, or that he'd be not really mean to others just full of himself, so far the only 'tactless' thing he did was making quick advances to Neon (which'd probably mean Ace has casanova traits too). Compared to Tendou, he seems to bond with people easier, outside of wrong first impression to Neon, as Tendou's typically rude and condescending except to certain few like Jiiya. While Ace here is encouraging to the people he interacted. The mean one would probably mock Keiwa's rant about the world's current nature (and I do expect some of that for Ace), but Ace here would persuade others into trying instead. Ace talks about creating a new world, though dunno how he'd accomplish that, like if he'd have no qualms wiping out the population for that, or seemingly not with him inviting Keiwa to try a new world. Regarding his henshin to Geats, for someone using ranging weapon, ironically he often jumps straight to his opponents... despite ranging weapon being created so he wouldn't need that. Or that's purposely done to show that he can tackle any situation, combat or ranged. His Rider's powers and gimmicks has some resemblance to Build in it's asymmetrical double color, Zi-O in how he spins the belt, and Accel in revving the Driver. So the Riders in Geats aren't actually all blank black, it's their incomplete forms, and Geats here had used Magnum and Booster power, which is Geats' main form, and apparently can have their positions switched. CMIIW for this, but Magnum provides his Magnum Shooter 40X and Booster provides his Boostriker? Dunno what's the benefit of switching positions yet. His Rider Kick Grand Victory is standard so far, the bike's only used to infuse flame to his kick, less spectacular use compared to for example Drive's SpeeDrop.

Does everyone feel like not only Geats being like Fortnite & Apex Legends, but also vibes of The Hunger Games & Maze Runner?
If Geats was adapted, I could picture taking place in a far future, a virtual world from a game or another Earth from the multiverse. I feel Ex-Aid & Geats will crossover eventually with the game vibes. I look forward to seeing how Geats goes through. I can just imagine Ikki invited to compete in the crossover. Vice would be his prize. |

Wow, surprisingly well-paced first episode. A healthy balance of drama and action, leaning towards the latter but in a way that doesn't feel forced. Having Geats' debut take place during the last act of an initial battle royale is genius because it A.) Gives us a valid reason to show off the Rider at his strongest (initial) state and avoids the whole "civilian suddenly knows how to fight" issue and B.) It gives us a rundown of the series premise without needless exposition or weird contrivances. Juxtaposing Ace's overconfidence with Keiwa's more idealistic personality was great, reminded me not only of Kabuto but also of Donbrothers, where the civilian Haruka is more the focus while the experienced Momoi is more the foil. There's a lot going on here with all of the characters. Plenty of mystery and I'm really excited to see where this goes next.
Action-wise, wow. This was an impressive debut fight for both Geats and Buffa. The CG looked pretty decent, it didn't really pull me out of it like it usually does. Geats transformation gimmick is awesome and the sound effects seem minimal compared to recent years but still very effective. I love the jazz-inspired music too. If I have any complaint to make it is that the Jamato look really, really comedically low budget. Really solid first episode, up there with Zero-One for me. It's nice to be excited for Kamen Rider again! |
