I saw the movie a few days after it came out in Shinjuku. My opinion on this movie is biased as fuck since I saw it in Japan in an IMAX showing and was hyped as all hell. I definitely loved it. Its not my favorite since I still prefer GMK and 54. As someone who just loves things Hideaki Anno does even the ones I dislike I still kinda dig this was everything I hoped for. Godzilla is finally the big bad ass force of destruction I like to see him as. His atomic breath has never been this crazy insane and powerful and the movie as a whole is just absolutely stunning on a visual level.
Since my japanese is quite limited I only understood the basic plot and have to wait for subs for the greater details but I still liked it a lot. Its a Godzilla movie that could have only come out in a post-fukushima japan and it conveys that extremely well. The last shot of the film is extremely Anno and I still dont know what to make of it yet |

I personally hope my theater in Columbia, Maryland shows it. I'm not going to drive a whole hour to see it. I personally can not wait for it. I do feel a bit let down that it's a solo film, but I guess the sequels can have something new.

I kind of was hoping it'd be more of a classic Godzilla film, but everything i've heard about it sounds awesome. I just don't like the huge hips/tiny arms thing.
Eh, we only have two solo films (unless you count stuff like Rodan, then we have like 5) so I'm very glad to see that it's a solo film. We never even got a solo millenium film.

So might as well post my spoiler free opinion of the movie. Loved it, might be my favorite Godzilla movie, though the movie is going to be very divisive. If 1954 was an answer to the atomic bombings, this is an answer to the Fukushima disaster.
Godzilla has about the same screen time as 2014 but the screen time is more spaced out ( so he appears in the beginning, middle and end). I liked all the human characters , except sadly for Satomi Ishiharas character. She is supposed to be a political rising star but the character just comes of as unrealistic compared to everybody else. Also her English is pretty bad, which wouldn't be problem if she weren't playing a second generation Asian American, it gets to a point that her co stars speak better English than her. Now to the main star Big G himself. This is perhaps the most different incarnation of the character since 1998 . Practically everything is changed from his powers to his origin. I liked most of the changes personally. Shin is more comparable to an Angel from Evangelion than your standard Godzilla. The way he walks, the way he looks he isn't even supposed to look like a living breathing organism but rather something much worse. His atomic breath is the most powerful one yet in the franchise and the scene were he uses his breath for the first time might be my favorite one in the franchise. The movie ends on a very weird, Anno like ending which will definitely be discussed. Personally I though that it was a set up for the sequel. The reactions in Japan have been great both critically and financially. The movie is already the highest grossing Godzilla movie at the Box Office, It might even gross more the 60 million dollars which is huge for a Japanese film. |

If you've lived in Japan for as long as I have (10 years) you'll love it for way it ridicules the Japanese government in their response to natural disasters. It's totally a plagiarism of their response to the Tsunami of 2011.
But if you're someone who lives outside of Japan and just wants to see Godzilla smash stuff, then you're not going to like this more as it doesn't really feature Godzilla that much. Personally, I loved this movie and Anno's views of contemporary Japanese society. It's a slow paced bureaucracy that never gets off its ass and does anything. Godzilla is not really the star, but moreover Humanity is the lead role. Last edited by Bueno; 08-26-2016 at 06:18 AM.. |

I finished watching Shin Godzilla for the first time last night and I loved it. Probably the best Godzilla movie in the last 30 years. I found the movie to be enjoyable from start to finished.
