The Zenkaigers' latest foe has a very unusual power; turning the entire city into a "Retro" aesthetic.

I know for a fact things weren't always better in the past because this is the greatest episode of Sentai ever put to CRT TVs!
No but really, between the impressive and thorough set-work, really funny jokes, and very sweet and touching character moments with both Yaachan and the Kikanoid gang, and an intriguing tease with Stacey, this episode felt like it was brimming with stuff and the runtime even felt lot longer (in a good way) to me. |

A really fun episode. I loved how everyone immediately adapted to and fell in love with the retro change (And Yacchan pointing out that it was a strange mix of eras, considering some things felt right out of the 50's, while others were clearly 70's and etc).
Speaking of, Yacchan was super great this episode. The cool grandma who does all she can to make others smile. Makes a lot of sense why she runs a candy store, now. The interesting hook between her and Stacey has me all the more curious, now, too (Though I do doubt they're actually related). Anyway, this episode was just full of great moments. From Zox being completely unaware of his morpher changing while he does his full dance, to the Zenkaigers not falling for the nostalgia wave due to enjoying their lives more in the present, to Retro World straight up using Ultraman's Specium Beam, there was so much I loved. Honestly, the only part I didn't enjoy was the mech fight forcing them to only use retro slang. It's not like going from English to Olde English (Or, in this case, Japanese to Classical Japanese). Like, I don't get why it forced them to only speak in outdated slang, was all. That aside, strong episode with tons of fun (And further cementing Gege as the real boss of the Tojitendo), with a strong set up for Stacey's future plots and a great time for Yacchan to shine!

Not gonna lie, OT changing the subs from white to yellow when Retro World got people yearning for the past was a nice touch.

I think Tsuburaya Productions's gonna sue somebody with that Specium Beam imitation.

Oooooh this was a good one! I guess the first thing to praise would the be the effort put into the production here. Once again, this in an episode that required some pretty elaborate set dressing for its gimmick, and that alone would be worth commending, but the attention to detail for the retro theme even beyond that is pretty fantastic. The text in the title card is all static and fuzzy, Cutanner and Ricky only being shown as their prop versions when they're under the monster's effects, the muted colors like we're watching a poor VHS transfer or something, the extremely effective timing of the change in aspect ratio... the list goes on and on and on and on. Seriously impressive stuff, and that's not even mentioning that Shoujirou Nakazawa brings back the Zenkai Space or whatever the official name is for a second. Not related to the retro gimmick – quite the opposite, actually – but I really wanted to note that somewhere. It was good hearing that distinctive sound again as the team run around inside of explosions. What was also nice was how this one turned out to be like Revenge of the Kikainoids in structure, giving them a way to outshine both Twokaiser AND Zenkaiser that highlights how strong the character work in this story is. It's a story where everything is all about longing for the past, be it for that child, for Kaito, or even for Stacey, who gets a minor but very effective role here to start showing the more sympathetic side of why he is the way he is, which is sure to pay off in the near future. It's this very smart blending of the monster's gimmick with the central theme, and it allows for such a satisfying way for the heroes to turn things around at the lowest point when most of them realize the past kinda sucked for them. It's not a story that beats you over the head with a moral, especially since it reminds us that Kaito genuinely is missing something, but it's a very smooth acknowledgement that not everything is worth being nostalgic for, delivered in a way that was completely true to these outsider characters who all found something in each other. On top of that, it's also a bit of a showcase for Yatsude, which was also a delight. I tend to be pretty fond of when Sentai has these sorts of parental figures played by experienced actors, and she's no exception! There's such an irresistible warmth to her performance, and an energy that always plays off the more excitable members of the cast *just* right. That's true even in episodes where she barely does anything, so to see that given a spotlight here was cool. You really can believe Kaito learned a ton of his positive qualities from her. So yeah, between all that, and being the first episode since Twokaiser's debut to keep Zox firmly out of the spotlight, I utterly adored this episode. Probably one that'll be hard to top!

Not necessarily. It served to highlight that "Things were better back then!" isn't always true, and some people are living the best parts of their lives in the now.

That's a very smart thing when it comes to the Kikanoids, when it comes to nostalgia, not everyone thinks the past is the best thing in the whole wide world, they where some crappy aspects of there lives that they don't want to revisit, which I'm sure some people resonate with (which I understand, let's leave it at that). That's the thing about Junko, she thinks outside the box.

This episode reminded me of Crayon Shin-chan: The Storm Called: The Adult Empire Strikes Back
If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it- one of the best animated films of all time. It released in 2001 and essentially teased adults about the toxic allure of nostalgia. 20 years later and it is still incredibly relevant. No spoilers or anything, but just like this episode of Zenkaiger, the reality is that nostalgia is just an illusion, one which benefits from the way it cannot ever be reclaimed. Live in the moment!
