Takeru seeks new ways to bring out the true power of his heroes. And Makoto is still keeping secrets, it seems...

Ugh, the stream was lagging horribly for me so I have no real idea what is up with the episode. I just stuck around to see if we would hear any Megauruoda sounds in the preview...so of course the stream just froze as soon as the preview started. Nice!
Egh, blergh. At least I got to hear the Eyecon say Destroy in that one Ganbarizing ad. |

Text dump n bound sorry about that, as well as for any grammatical or spelling errors I probably made.
I have to say I didn't really think this episode was that good. The pacing felt very fast, which is a criticism others have had of the show, or at least certain episodes, but I haven't felt it up until now. The plot with Makato trying to along the powers of Houdini while cool in concept in how he was restricted due to the chains, just felt like it happened to quick I never really got a feeling of why Houdini refused to lend Makato his powers, and when he did give Makato his powers it felt completely arbitrary because I didn't really feel like Makato had changed anything at all about himself or had beaten Houdini in some manner. I mean Makato was still shouting at him to give him power to help save his sister, how was the different then Makato shouting at him to save his sister earlier. I did like the Houdini henshin and fight though, the henshin with the bike driving up and then turning into the jacket was cool as was the finisher. Takeru's plot with trying to talk with Mushashi felt, at least to me, like it was meant to be a sub plot over a few episodes, but it just got resolved at the end, and I guess that's okay, but still I don't feel like we got a very detailed explanation as to what was going on, though future episodes will probably expand on that. Also I kind of feel dissapointed that they didn't give Onari a bigger role in the plot with him being able to talk with the Goemon eyecon, but who knows maybe he can, and that'll go somewhere in the future. (also just a random note I liked the use of I wanna say the fish eyes lens for the scenes in the eyecon, it was a nice touch that gave it a sort other worldly feel). I mostly just feel "Eh" towards the return of Javel, while his fight at the beginning of the episode was nice, in both reestablishing him as a threat (though how he was able to go toe to toe with boost when that previously kicked his butt is a question, I'll just chalk it up to either he knew what he was up against this time or that he was cutting loose some more) and in how it showed the more sadistic/ warrior side of him. I did like that he appeared to sort of resent Aran for restricting him, hope we see more development of that in the future. I honestly was expecting him to not get killed again, with the riders victory instead coming from killing the Gundari instead. but Javel being killed a second time in I want to say 4 episodes is pretty funny. Kanon was certainly present, I'm very much hoping she gets more character development and involvement in the plot in the future, because currently she just sort of feels present, and kind of like a plot catalyst. So Overall I'd say the episode was okay-ish, it made me laugh a few times, though that may be just because I'm easily amused, but still felt too fast for it's own good, and it might be hard to take Javel seriously in the future considering whats happened to him. |

Terrible episode. This one really brings out the worst this series has to offer: Annoying secondary characters doing nothing but being annoying, plot convenience en masse, boring and CGI infested fights.
It starts out rather sweet with the guys celebrating Kanon's release from the hospital, and in these situations I can tolerate Onari being weird, because it's just people being happy. But otherwise this is just the setup for us to learn that Makoto can't use Houdini. And you know what? That's an interesting setting. At first we saw that the Riders had to ask the ghosts to join them, then Eyecons started to pop out of random people and the Riders could use those without any problem, no consequences. Then Ryoma showed up and didn't want to be used. That was kinda cool. And now we have an Eyecon refusing being used and Takeru advises Makoto to talk to Houdini. Yeah, that's cool, do that! But wait, no time, because your sister is still nothing but a damsel and Javel is back. He beats Makoto up, Takeru does the boost, the end. Makoto is angry, Javel takes the princess to his castle and that's that. Meanwhile, one of those giant Ganma shows up and Onari being on the trip he always is decides to chase the dragon. Okay. No one else? Let's just leave Onari to deal with that? Good idea. And then the biggest turd of this episode: Makoto decides talking to Houdini is done by being run over by his motorcycle. Frequently. WTF? You could argue that Houdini doesn't want to talk, but still: Why? You have a character who never believed in ghosts and was a master escape artist. Now he's a ghost and trapped in a Japanese childrens toy. How can you not build on that setup? Let Makoto travel into the Eyecon, let him prove that he's more than just a fighter, let him help Houdini to be at peace with himself and use the chains to symbolize that something is still holding Makoto down. Let Houdini agree to fight with Makoto so they can shatter these chains together. ... Or just fight against your motorcycle. Sounds good. Except it isn't, it's boring and cheap crap. Javel goes inside the dragon, Onari is still on drugs, Takeru trusts Makoto to not die while being punched by Javel, and then Houdini appears. Inside of the bike. Again... WTF. Let the parka appear out of the driver, let it posses the bike and it makes some sense. But it's already in the bike? Nice toy commercial, but no. Makoto then CGI's Javel's CGI to death and it looks like shit. The whole parka being an actual suit was surprising, but they don't use it anyways. They probably can't, but still. After that Takeru decides to get some forced development of his own now and travels into Musashi's Eyecon. For like 30 seconds where he tells Takeru that they're still bros but the other Eyecons won't be so easy. Wow, thanks for the foreshadowing I guess. So yeah the episode was crap. Nothing about this was enjoyable, so much wasted potential. Even Onari had his moment, where he was apparently able to talk with Goemon but as it turns out he was just full of crap. Thanks. Other shows would've given me reasons to like or respect the annoying side characters by now, but Onari is just continuing being the stupid clown I guess. Like, even Drive made me appreciate the crazy SIU a little by giving them spotlight. And Ultraman X used an entire episode to make the bloody annoying lab girl relateable. But this show will probably never do it. At this point I only continue because Aran as Necrom could shake things up, the Ganma world could be interesting and Takeru "uniting" the Eyecons could be cool. But am I interested in this show as it is currently? Do I enjoy it? Hell no. |

I'm with Deepsea and Kiwami on this one. The episode had some good moments, but the whole thing with Makoto and Houdini really didn't make any sense. What does being locked up in chains that apparently don't weigh you down or restrict your movement and being chased by a motorcycle have to do with Houdini? Makoto got buried under rubble twice in this episode, wouldn't it have made more sense for him to earn Houdini's respect by finding a way to escape using his own skill? Also, why the eff does Houdini have flying motorcycle powers? That makes absolutely no sense.
I really hope this show pulls a Drive and starts really improving in quality, because man is it not good right now. |

To those who complain about Houdini's power is flying
Turn out Houdini was into aviation and he want to be first man to fly over Australia You aware Houdini always get hurt a lot but he can take the pain, I guess that was Houdini teaching Makoto for...... TAKE THE PAIN! GREAT! Thank a lot your guys! You make me think about Seal's Fly like an eagle song! Last edited by vin13ish; 01-28-2016 at 12:03 PM.. |

Actually I just realized a way they could sort of save this episode and justify Makato not spam using Houdini (since you know CGI budget and all). Have it so in the next episode in one of the fights Specter (probably against Necrom) goes to use Houdini, but it doesn't work again.
Then have an episode where Specter and Houdini actually talk and Houdini explains that this episode was him giving specter his power so Kanon didn't die, because he's not a massive jerk who would let a child die even if everyone involved was ignoring the obvious solution. Have Makato and Houdini have a bonding time through out the episode and earn each others respect, and then come in and save the day somehow. Also explain why Houdini is in the bike which admittedly might have something to do with Makato's time in the Ganma world and his relationship with Alan since it seems to be implied that that has something to do with how he got his powers, but who knows. Actually Houdini being unwilling to allow Specter to use his power could also tie into him being trapped in the bike by the Ganma, as well as just generally not liking his situation of being trapped and being a ghost I mean no one probably cares about my idea since, I'm not a writer for the show and thus can not influence how things will play out but hey it's an idea. also this is very true.
