Amazing episode! Can't wait to see how this "5 year plan" goes. So far it seems like a really deep and thoughtful approach went into everything.
As for side media nods: We had Zabee cast on armor helmet designs on one alien, which was more poignant in how he kept taking the mask off. Including his meteor like pod(the meteor of the worms in Kabuto), which gives us the cable creature which was essentially made of worms and how it was sent ahead of time. Also some interesting "Darkness Falls" nods with a tooth collecting alien, which is also nodded by the cable creature in it's darkness movements. Which also gives us some Predator nods about trophy hunting, and the mask removal too. Loved the building her sonic screw driver montage, was very Build with Sento, but also very the Doctor being the Doctor and had some Tony Stark Ironman elements including his classic second season 90s intro with the hammer. Also some spoon elements nodding a host of things, and Matrix nods there too with how there became no spoon. Construction site final battle with a 'leap of faith' element and two cranes attempting to meet in the middle but still having a gap to jump across. Also the "every human is important" element in the self-help tapes, with also some inverted aspects in how he's not the best of humanity with his petty revenge moment. Mork and Mindy style clothing at the end. With a rainbow emblem on the shirt like X-23's rainbow shirt in Logan. Also got a shade bit of Spider-man in there with Grace acting a lot like an Aunt May type character with an added uncle Ben twist type element. Which tbh, also seems like a callback to Clara and how she ignored what the doctor said, but did so to help save people, and put her life on the line for others. Little more tragic though because, unlike Clara, she did so without any thought of the Doctor saving her. Making her more heroic really and also setting a tone of this Doctor will have casualties, and also expressing the lengths a parent figure will go to protect others. The overall ending also shows directly how the Doctor literally pulls others into adventures too, sometimes by accident. Also seemed to be some nods to Lost, Insterstellar 5555, and some other random nods. Loved that train in blackness near opening shot too. Also the bike riding thing, that was a bit pointed for a metaphor about life, but noted. xD And that's only a quick overview, I'm sure I missed some other deeper nods in there too. This episode was really jam packed with nods from all over and callbacks to previous episodes. Overall, really enjoyed it and loved all the references throughout too. How they made every reference feel seamless and part of the story without being a hammy forced easter egg but was still there was top notch. And the new sonic is tops. Best one yet. Looking forward to more episodes. Looks like next week is going to tackle a little bit of Enemy Mine, some indie scifi, and some tattooine star wars stuff. Also digging the "Twice Upon a Time" reference in the title to how Once Upon a Time first started on Sundays, and this is now the new Sunday family adventure drama. So, those new Doctor Who figures. A mix of some great, and some really odd choices. Assuming I can find them before the scalpers / distrubution chain screws me over, I'm gonna try and get the Daleks, especially the Seventh and Eighth Doctor ones. I love me some Daleks. Especially ones that look as good as this.

I have mixed feelings about these new reveals.
On the Dalek side of things, the Big Finish Doctor/Dalek packs are pretty underwhelming. The Dark Eyes Eight and TV Movie Seven are nice figures, but the Daleks are all very basic repaints because Character Option are beyond doing any new tooling apart from heads it seems. I mean I'll get them because it's me and I buy every Dalek, but there were way more iconic Daleks from the audios they could have used. Would it have hurt to use the classic mould in at least one of them? 4th Doctor/TARDIS (Shada) and 5th Doctor/TARDIS (Caves of Androzani) sets are nice. I still need a TARDIS so I might pick up the Shada one because the style is quite different to the rest of them. 3-Packs: 7th Doctor/Cyberleader/Cyberman (Silver Nemesis) - Pass since all three figures are re-releases. Great for people who didn't pick them up before, but an Earthshock Cyberleader or Attack of the Cybermen Controller would have been way better. 2nd Doctor/Peri/Stike (The Two Doctors) - Pretty neat set overall. Will probably pick it up. Harry/Linx/Styre - Hands down the best reveal of them all. Getting a Harry figure is fantastic news and I passed on the original releases of the Sontarans (was not prepared to pay for the spaceship they came with), so a budget release like this is fantastic news. Doctor Who fans are going nuts for these reveals and I get that it's the biggest news we've had in AGES, but at the same time....we're at a point where the only mass release figure (13) is a shelf-warmer, everything else is exclusive to B&M Bargains (a budget store of all places) and Character Options will do the bare minimum when it comes to new tooling. Given how popular the franchise is the toy line is in an extremely sorry state. Also Akiba hit me up if you can't find any of them - my B&M is always well-stocked with Who stuff so I'm not worried about them being scarce.

I get why the Daleks are such basic repaints, since presumably, for a line going to BnM of all places, the budget wasn't amazingly high for retooling. Especially since mainline releases were dying back in 2014, and the toy scene hasn't really picked up since, considering what I've seen in Smyths. Seriously, they still had a Dino Charge Megazord proudly on display a couple of weeks ago.
And I don't know what it is, despite the fact this is such a weird, small release, but I can't help but be positive. Maybe it's the Dalek kick I'm on right now, but I'm happy to see some weird varients that aren't just "bronze Dalek, again". Even if, for 2/3, it's just the head and globes. But that TV Movie 7 makes up for it. A classic Dalek would be cool, and probably objectively better, but something is better than nothing. And cheers for the offer, my local one is decent, but sometimes a little dodgy. And I might be back at uni when they come out, and I've no idea where the closest one there is.

So uhhh. Did anyone else get Capaldi vibes off of Ruth's Doctor suit?

I recently got the Gen II episodes dating back to Rose in the 2018 re issue of Doctor Who through the
12th Doctor. Also the 13th Doctor year 1. I was missing a bunch of specials and the whole of the 12th Doctor on DVD. That said currently watching the 11th Doctor on DVD. |

Something else that comes to mind is the Sixth Doctor. Crazy, loud colours present but also his much more subdued blue coat and suit from his Big Finish appearances.

I at first thought Ruth was a new incarnation of River.

What's interesting to me though is that... a lot of earlier season mysteries lead up to a returning big bad. Bad Wolf culminated in a showdown with the Daleks; Saxon ended up being The Master. But this season's been throwing out all those big returning antagonists left and right; The Master's been at the start of the season, we've already gotten Cybermen confirmed by Jack so it's not a surprise; Jack himself is back; the Judoon and Time Lords were in this one... we're leading up to either something original or building on something that was already there, rather than letting the substance be "oh shit! They're back!", and that's super great. I just hope they don't mess it up.

Well I saw the last series on DVD and it was good. I'm looking forward to this new run in March with the next 10. I wonder however if somehow in Series 39 Jo might become the 14th Doctor. We still have 13 next year so I wonder if as well we get another time lady.
