Can't find a thread like this so I wanted to make one.
Here's some backstory, course you don't have to read it & just skip to the question: After getting some Kamen Rider Figuarts I ended up unhappy with them since they're so detailed, have lots of lose-able accessories & are a higher cost so I can't really play with them. You have to be careful to an annoying degree or keep them in box. And the hand popping thing, no matter how many people tell me otherwise, always feels like I'm breaking them. So I'm looking elsewhere to show my love for the franchise. Right now I'm choosing between the DX Henshin Gear or the Gimmick Figures. Now I'm weighing the pros & cons & deciding should I collect everything in its line or only picking my favorites but then losing functionality. Next I thought I wanna get Super Sentai stuff & see what's available. Should I choose DX Mecha, DX Henshin Gear or Candy Toy Mini-pla Mecha? Then I had the idea to support Digimon toys that I enjoy. Do I want Digivolving Figures or the Digivices? As I went on making lists I knew that I wasn't alone in thinking like this before. So I wanted to ask: How do you choose what to collect & why? Have you had to change your mind? Why or why not? Did you decide on your own or have help? Thanks in advanced! |

It's hard to really come up with any rules for myself because I enjoy everything, I've bought so much from Kamen Rider, from figures to henshin devices, just because it's all so cool and interesting, have you seen drive's belt? Fucking beautiful.
Which I guess is a rule in itself actually, only get the really interesting and cool stuff. Like I love kamen rider but I'm not going to get all the belts because the functionality of some of those belts is atrocious, Blade's belt does like two things. From what I'm reading I'm guessing your dilemma is one of role play vs figures, if you're the type who really gets a kick out of cosplay or just the idea of being the hero on screen then always go for stuff like digivices or rider gear. If you like playing with figures all rough and tumble go for gimmick figures. And if you want pieces for your shelf go for stuff like Figuarts, which in my opinion are more akin to art pieces than play things because it's such a highly detailed collectible line or perhaps the DX sentai mecha which do bugger all except for standing there looking beautiful. It ranges from person to person I find, as I fit into all three I tend to get everything and in the end the only choice I find making when it comes to buying things is if it's interesting or not. Oh also you could take into consideration the cost and worth of those things, like recently I saw a model of the robot from the anime suisei no gargantia which looks amazing and is really the only figure of him available but it was around the 100-150 range and while I can afford it, when taking into account the size of the figure, it's accessories and so forth as well as comparing it to similarly styled but cheaper figures, I chose to leave it alone.

I wish I had a long, drawn out process, but it honestly boils down to a sliding scale of "Options" and "Pricing."

My only real advice is that the "Highest quality, super expensive ultimate amazing collector's figure" isn't always the best choice to pick up.
They eat up space like nobody's business, they are often teeth gnashingly fragile, and often times, they don't fit in to the general collection as a whole.

I only buy FiguArts when it comes to Kamen Rider, I don't really play with them, I like to display them. When it comes to which ones I buy, it's about how much I like the design and the character. That's it.
With different franchises it's similar: I buy what I like, but I usually go for more expensive stuff with better quality if it's an option. |

I collect on what I want to collect based on things I like. For Kamen Rider, I tend to stick with figuarts. I don't have a job and I only get money from working with my neighbor during the week. So I tend to skip out on web exclusives unless it's a form or character I really like. Since I don't have a job, I do my best to save up my money. The more I save, the more things I can buy.

I don't share your Figuarts objection because I don't mind storing them in their boxes. With that said, yeah, I've managed to ding up a couple of mine; the tip of one of Hibiki's horns broke off and went missing after a shelf dive.
Since others will bring up the gimmick toys, I though it might be worth mentioning some of the candy toys. Specifically, there's a version of the candy toys - at a minimum for Gaim and Drive - that are smaller, articulated, MOSTLY unpainted, and pretty much duplicate the gimmick toys at a much lower price point. They're the size I think I remember from classic GI Joe figures. A friend picked up Ichigo Gaim, Kamen Rider Duke, and the various Drive forms for me. Each toy comes with maybe two colors of paint applications and a sticker sheet. (If you disassemble the package, there are instructions for the sticker placement.) Once the stickers are applied, they actually look pretty great; they fill in the unpainted details. The figures are surprisingly well-articulated: ball joints at the hips, shoulders, and ankles, with swivels for most of the rest. The Gaim toys came with the arms gimmick, although parts-swapping was used instead of hinges. The Drive toys each came with both the form's default tire and then another (Justice Hunter for Type Speed, Rumble Dump for Type Wild, and Fire Braver for Type Technique.) There's cross-compatibility between Speed and Technique, although Wild's tires don't work the same. I tried researching these lines but didn't have much luck (probably due to not speaking Japanese), but I got the sense that this candy toy line has been around for some time. Also, it's really easy to get them confused with the sofubi candy toys, since the packaging is the same size and extremely similar. |

That's pretty interesting. I've seen those figures for OOO too, but only pieces for them & never the complete figure. It's like the Sentai Mini-pla line, only the other pieces are harder to find. It's also annoying that I can't find any other season. And I'll have to change my tune about the gimmick figures since many aftermarket prices for Decade's, Double's & OOO's actually exceed their Figuarts. ^^; Oh well. I'll just have to be extra careful then.

Articulation, attachment to character, quality and nostalgia are my driving factors. The Legacy zords are bricks but I bought them for nostalgia and I love the new sculpted details, diecast metal and paint. Figuarts are the best looking Sentai/Kamen Rider figures on the market so I have a few.
Honestly I would LOVE a 6" Power Rangers Legacy line that was as articulated as Marvel Legends/Star Wars Black Series but without the roided up look of most BoA Ranger figures. Easy way to tap into a current/popular market trend(fully articulated 6" figures) while standing apart from Figuarts and Armored Might figures. Also the whole roided out look is played out, this isn't the 90's anymore.
