i put this here becasue even tho PR is a huge part of this debate, it's not the only thing i'm going to mention.
Ok, so, i'm one of those guys that seems to be stuck in his childhood with his hobby's, thinking that the stuff i grew up with will never be matched and being unable to enjoy newer versions of my beloved franchises as much as i did the originals. i'm the kinda guy that could spend a fortune building a collection of childhood stuff, like mmpr and turtles stuff, and really keep enjoying that and keep riding that nostalgia wave....only to then realize that it's kinda sad to keep living in the past, or is it ? my childhood,in the entertainment field, was: MMPR,Turtles, reading spiderman & xmen comics, watching the tim burton batman movies and the animated series, and playing nes, snes and megadrive all week long. now, for all that stuff there is an equal these days, pr are still going, turtles kept going, comics kept going, games kept being made...you get the point,my favorite hobby's/franchises evolved with time, yet i keep harking back to the "classics" in all them category's. i think about classic games, tv shows and other old stuff all the time, and always looking online to see what new cool stuff i can find on it ( like new figures or statues based on the classic stuff) , then occasionally i pick up a new comic or watch newer pr series and i like it on a superficial level but it's a long shot of how fondly i remember "my" versions. i can go watch a mmpr or turtles episode and still get into "that" zone, then when it's over wondering why i can't do this anymore today and create new magical fan moments to look back on 10 years from now like i do today with the old stuff. i'm only 27 so it's not as if i'm a senile old bastard lol, yet sometimesi think my nostalgia indulged mind is rather a curse than a blessing, since i know the old series was not better than what is on today yet in my mind it always seems to be. |

Nostalgia has it's bad and good points.
Example - I bought Captain N and the game master on DVD a few years ago. Worst purchase i ever made. Some things are better left in the past. But it can help lead you in the right direction to new things and experiences. Power Rangers lead me to Sentai and that lead me to Kamen Rider , which lead me to this forum , that is helping me meet new people and go to places i have never been like New York & Philly just because they have stores that sell Japanese toys. I am scouting martial arts classes and talking over plans with my wife to possibly get me a motorcycle down the line. I would not have thought to do any of these things with my life if it wasn't for my hobby now.I would hate to imagine how bored i would be if i didn't discover tokusatusu. it's been the best thing for me Maybe you just have to respect to past and use that as your guide into the future. |

Nostalgia is fine. It's when you start applying nostalgia glasses to everything is when it starts to become a problem.
For example, it's fine to love and enjoy Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. The problem comes up when you watch one episode of In Space then drop it because "It's not MMPR." The fond memories you had as a kid while watching these shows are pretty much never gonna be usurped, but you shouldn't let those memories stop you from enjoying newer versions of your favorite classics.

Things have a way of making certain impressions on us when they're novel and when we're young. We see new things and we are totally amazed with them and they stick in our memories forever. We associate those memories with the emotions we faced during that time and we'll always fondly remember them.
That's not so easy nowadays because firstly, we're older and less easily impressed and secondly, there's too much of a good thing with entertainment. While something like the first Christopher Reeves Superman movie was a marvel back then, it's now very commonplace. Thus it's far too easy to say that they did it better back then when contemporary stuff has progressed a lot as well. Like Matrixbeast said, it's problematic only when you start applying nostalgia glasses to everything. Saying something isn't good because of legitimate problems with the production is fine, it's only when you ignore similar problems in the originals that it becomes a flawed perspective. For example, MMPR does almost as much wrong as Power Rangers Samurai but most people conveniently forgot how corny the acting in MMPR could be, or how bad the lines were, or how boring some episodes could be. I don't wish to start a debate on whether MMPR or Samurai is better, I'm just saying that people ignore the faults of MMPR that they accuse of being present in Samurai. However, I feel it is important to keep to nostalgia, memories are part of our identity and who we are. Just make sure that you've an open mind to realize that what's available now is not the same, and may just be enjoyable enough if you stop comparing.

oooh..I like this topic...some things are always better how you remember them then how they actually are...*eyes g1 omega supreme* and then there are the things that always will be that amazing *looks over a fully armored g1 jetfire* (now is smug that some of you cursed me for having them lol). The mindset I guess is knowing what you took from it back in the day. For example, the Fall of Cybertron game makes the Transformers as cool as I THOUGHT they were back in the day. For the hell of it I put on Call of the Primitives (TF, Season 3)...first 5 minutes were everything that made transformers amazing...then the plot started...and a part of me died lol.
At the same time I can watch an episode of Dr. Who and still find everything I loved back then. Same with Robotech actually... |

Once I'm done with Power Rangers I'm planning to rewatch Masked Rider (as I said in another thread) and Beetleborgs, both of which I don't expect to hold up very well. What will make it interesting is I might watch VR Troopers too (which I hated as a kid) and part of me expects that to hold up better than the others

I'll make this short and sweet.
When people can look back on what they love but understand that it was never perfect then it's all hunky dory. But when people only see the good and lash out at anything they feel threaten their views then we have a problem. |
