Decided I couldn't watch two Showa sentai shows in a row, as they all suffer from the same problem of shoving mech battles in almost every single episodes.
Thus I started watching Megaranger and I'm through the first 6 episodes. So far I really like it and I think it's "teenagers with attitude" done right. However, I can't tell if it's overall better or weaker than PRiS... Guess I'll have to dig into more episodes. |

Finished Megaranger last week and it already managed to be my 2nd favourite Sentai (only second to Dairanger). I kinda liked the whole team but MegaSilver really stood out as an exceptional 6th ranger. I'd put it on par with PRiS as both shows have their own strengths and memorable events (e.g. that one in Space episode where Zhane dates Astronema).
Currently watching Ohranger but I set my expectation pretty low for that one. The problem with this show is that it can't decide whether it wants to be drama, comedy or softcore porn (even though I like the OhYellow swimsuit episode). My favourite so far is the one where a scrap monster tries to exact his revenge on Bacchushund. |

The scrap monster was a good episode. Wait until you get to episode 32. That one is fantastic and an oddball episode because there is no mech battle and the royal family don't even show up in the episode.

I watched episodes 31-34 of Dynaman today. Episode 33 was really damn good and 34 has now brought in a new type of MotW, which had an impressive debut.
On the other hand, episode 32 is the first episode in the series that I felt was a big miss. The whole thing was just a mess as the plot was all over the place and things didn't make any bit of sense. |

Not so much what I'm watching, but what I want to watch. It has been a while since I watched a Sentai, so I think I'm gonna pick up either Dairanger or Kakuranger once I finish Kiva. Can't decide which one though. Kakuranger seems a bit more adventurous in nature, and I like the fact that the monsters are yokai, but Dairanger has some of my favorite suits and mech designs, plus the clips I've seen have absolutely fantastic fight choreography. Help me decide?

In any case, I'd recommend Kakuranger over Dairanger. Dairanger's pretty good so far but Kakuranger is more or less my idea of the perfect Sentai. A comedic adventure show about a group of heroes bonding with one another and getting into wild hijinks along the way. Its not my favorite Sentai but its pretty high up there. |

What are you in the mood for? Kakuranger, while having some serious moments here and there, primarily a comedic show that's very light on story and far more interested in having a good time then anything else. I haven't seen Dairanger in full yet but from what I've seen its a much dark show with a bigger focus on, for lack of a better term, character development. While it technically has more story the Kakuranger, its *story* is less about a bunch of important events happening regularly and more about a bunch of small events that build up to a much bigger one late on. That's actually pretty common for 90s sentai now that I think about it...

You can't go wrong with either series as they are both my top two favorite Sentai shows. I'd say go with Dairanger first since it came first, but ultimately, it doesn't matter, you are going to watching the best of the best. Oh, while Dairanger is more serious, it still does have goofiness to it. It is Sentai after all. The difference is that Dairanger is able to balance its comedic moments with its serious ones, something the shows of today seemed to fail at.

I'm under the firm belief that the 90s, while probably the best era of Sentai as a whole, is probably the strangest one as well. The entire decade feels like one big, awkward growth spurt as Sentai, and Tokusatsu as a whole really, tried to adapt to the changing times and stricter rules of children's TV going into the 21 century.
