I know a lot of us have hot-blooded red phobia, but after a show with a very low key red, it's refreshing to have someone with more energy. And at least the actor is better than Takaharu in the first episode of Ninninger. He's also 1000 times less annoying than Magiranger's Kai, Dekaranger's Ban, and Gekiranger's Jan in their respective first episodes. Plus, his first henshin was baller af.
But on a serious note, I understand the apprehension about Lucky and his character. I'm honestly not too bothered by how they're portraying him so far, there's been worse in my opinion. The actor's definitely got a nice energy around him, though not as nice as Ryo Ryusei did as Daigo nor is the character's catchphrase as nice. I do have a problem with his motivation of becoming a Kyuranger being basically "wow that's cool i wanna join in", even though he does show that he wants to stop Jark Matter from controlling the universe when they talk to him about it. And I feel like they did a pretty good job of setting up the personalities of each of the Rangers while giving some surprising focus on Garu, since you'd think being the Red Ranger the first episode would be focused on him. But it does feel like they do cram a lot into the first episode, whatnot with introducing the first three initial Kyurangers plus Raptor, then Lucky and then Garu, and then KyurenOh (the fight was pretty kickass in my opinion). I have a feeling that we won't be seeing much of the individual Voyagers if they're only using CGI ones for the limbs. Hopefully that won't be the case. Overall, I feel like it's kind of a standard premiere episode of a Super Sentai series. Has a lot of good, has some bad, but as always there's a lot of potential. Can't wait for the second episode. |

So....after taking a break from sentai since ninninger literally have me burned out, I decided to watch the 1st episode of this, then I said I would go back to zyuohger since I stopped at episode 11. Anyway, to this episode, apparently this sentai took a lesson from ninniger because Holy Jupiter and Mars, did it feel like ninninger all over again. I'll admit that the premise is interesting. The fact that these "rangers" are going to different planets and recruiting members of their team is a great idea, but they are going WAY, WAY TO FAST with this. They already brought in 2 new members after an initial 3...and now they are gonna introduce at least 2 more next episode. This is stuff they need to do in like the mid to late 10's, not episode 2. Another thing, while watching the episode, I noticed the way their henshin sequence worked. My first reaction to their henshin sequence was like "What?" With the devices saying "Say The Change" and "Kyu Globe", etc., I literally felt like I was watching a Kamen Rider show rather than a sentai. Also, remember the ninninger remark? The characters aren't that great. Red is Takaharu 2.0, blue is blah, Hammy is an untolerable combination of Kagura and Fuuka (And I LOVE Kagura. Come at me!), Don't remember yellow's name cause he's bland like Nagi, and The black bull is the only one I like so far. In terms of a premiere episode, It honestly didn't impress me. The pacing was so bad that everything flew above my head. The writers need to learn to slow their episodes down, but not to slowly. All I ask for in a recent sentai is to have a well-paced series. We haven't had a truly well-paced series since Gokaiger (haven't seen Go-busters, Kyoryuger's pacing is all over the place, ToQger's is better, but still has problems, and Ninninger's is way to fast, also haven't finished Zyuohger).

I've come to a theory about this episode: The writers planned it out as a two parter but had to condense it into one so the full Mecha could be featured right out the gate.

KyuRenOh reminds me of old school mecha.
Lucky could be toned down. No, he should be toned down. Can't wait for TenbinGold! |

How does KyurenOh remind you of old school mecha?
I'm genuinely curious.

Episode thoughts
Overall I'm cautiously excited. I haven't finished a Sentai series since Toqger and all the things that are being introduced here feel like things that will bring me back in provided they are executed well. Last edited by Byg42; 02-14-2017 at 07:27 AM.. |

With KR and Sentai, they usually are given a bigger CGI budget and everything for the first episode so they can make it show off the toys more, and initial launch sales are the highlights for any company regardless of media. They want kids to nag to their parents "MUMMY MUMMY I WANT THAT I WANT THAT!" right from the start, and the mech's already available, correct?

Is it wrong that I got an almost Futurama vibe from this first episode? Lucky is Fry.

I said in my first post I was happy we weren't introducing everyone out of the gate, but thinking about I kind of wish they either DID just have everyone show up at once, already with their powers, which would have way more impact than hyping "NINE RANGERS! NINE RANGERS!" and then having the first episode give us a standard team of five, and then you can just get to their individual backstories in focus episodes after the premiere, leaving the premiere free to just establish the setting and have some cool action. OR, if you do want to go slow, actually go slow and have the first episode be something like "2 Kyurangers (I guess 4 if you REALLY need the robot that badly) show up to wherever and end up picking up Red while they're there". For the record, I still really enjoyed this episode, but the more I think about it, the more it seems like it was begging for a different script than it got. Well, it isn't made of blocks? Personally, while I sort of see it (assuming "old school" means 2000-2009ish), the big orbs on the limbs make Kyuren-Oh look too chubby and adorable to really seem like a throwback to me.

I gotta say: I love the Jack Matter. This is what the Zangyaku empire should've been.
Overall, the show's off to a pretty good start though I think they should've saved Garu's introduction for later and focused on Lucky. Speaking of Lucky, I don't mind him. He seems like Takaharu if Takaharu had an indoor voice, but I can see his shtick getting old pretty fast. |
