Sena's athletic career is suffering due to her Kiamager duties, so her sponsors request she test out some new gear.

I'm really curious as to how and why this impromptu Gekiranger nostalgia-fest going on. It's definitely not unwelcome! It's just I figure there must be some story behind it happening.
Even that aside, this was really fun. The camera-work doing all sorts of neat things while Sena is forced to run is really neat. I feel like there's probably been a movie with the concept of someone who can't stop running, and it'd probably look like this! Is it just me or are these mecha fights getting shorter and shorter? They just come and go in a flash! (Not counting that one time where they literally said they were going to finish off the giant monster in one second.) |

The inclusion of Rio and Mele in the flashbacks made me smile. Hell, just having Natsume and Miki make a return is making me want to rewatch Gekiranger again
More Geki love from Toei itself is never unwelcome. Anyway, fun episode. It's cute to see that Miki and Natsume have incorporated Jan's speak into their daily lives, especially since it seemed that Miki was only doing it to help Jan understand things. Sena's a joy, as always, and it was cute to see Garza protect Yodonna.

This episode was so wakiwaki you guys! Really made me feel all howahowa inside. Like hanging out with some old munimuni you haven't seen in forever. Kind of a dekadeka amount of Gekiranger fanservice to just throw out there all of a sudden, but it's really hard to complain when I love that show so much.
...As you can probably tell. To put that above paragraph in terms people will actually be able to understand, I'm not sure why an episode of Kiramager suddenly decided to do this tribute, or why it's inexplicably by Gekiranger's main writer Michiko Yokote, who I don't believe has written an episode of Sentai since Goseiger ended, but the end result is a fun detour of an episode that's probably going to be a lot less enjoyable to people who aren't big on the material being referenced. Putting the homages aside, it's a very standard episode of Kiramager, which isn't a bad thing for sure, but there's not much exceptional about it to praise. Sena is a great character (they all are), so it's fun to see another episode focused squarely on her and her ability to run really fast all the time, but it doesn't do anything particularly clever with the premise, nor does she get some good character arc to tie things together. I think my favorite beat in the whole episode was probably Mach coming in at the end feeling dejected about not being involved in the story until that moment. The thing that gives the episode that extra punch is very much the Gekiranger bits, and while two random side characters coming back may not seem like a big deal, people who have watched Gekiranger ought to know that there were no small parts in that series, so having Miki and Natsume back is as good as anyone else. It was cool seeing them again, and if the clip show history lesson inspires the kids currently watching Kiramager to go back and watch Gekiranger, I'd say this entire episode is worth it just on that alone. I mean, Gekiranger is just the best, you know? It had a very memorable cast with some great development, arcs that played out in really satisfying ways, a few good twists in the plot here and there, crazy strong theming centering around those sweet martial arts influences, which of course meant tons of stylish action with amazing choreography... Wait, what show was I talking about again?

And then there’s another problem I’ve had pointed out to me: The show‘s plot focuses on the villains too much, to the point where the heroes feel unnecessary. I kind of agree with that, because while the villains are preparing for a final assault on their eternal rivals, the heroes are stuck babysitting an obnoxious kid in a plot that could’ve easily been cut with nothing of value lost. And when that final assault does begin, it’s immediately interrupted with yet another pointless filler episode that could’ve easily been cut with nothing lost. The final arc is a lot better than the rest, but it still has some problems, namely the reveal that Long is behind EVERYTHING bad that happened in the series, which just feels like a contrived reason to forgive the bad guys who were so dead set on destroying the city during their tenure. And then it insists Rio has a love for Mele that makes his redeemable, which he has not displayed in any of his scenes alone with her, which consist of him either ignoring or abusing her. Which means the fact he becomes a good guy feels unearned and makes his death more satisfying than tragic. But unfortunately, Long is robbed of getting an equally satisfying death, which is also annoying, since he’s really not a villain that I’d want to see more of. I don’t hate Gekiranger, despite what this post might indicate. I just think Goseiger did everything it did better. |

I gotta disagree with a lot of that
I felt it's pacing was well done, slowly introducing Jan into the real world while also building up Rio and the Rin Juken. It moved at a steady pace so that it felt believable without dragging. Concerning the upgrade plots, it's nothing amazing, but I think they did it well. First being that they each gained a unique weapon, there only being 3 of them keeping it from being a non stop rut, and each skill they learned complimented their fighting style. This ties in well with their Super forms, which they had to learn a skill that went against their normal methods. On the villain side of things, Long being the master manipulator behind all the things was something I can slide, but I can see why it'd be frustrating, since it does lead to some contrivances. However, after Maku bites it, they really started to sprinkle in that Rio did feel something for Mele. It didn't feel like it came out of nowhere during the final stretch, to be honest. And I'm now curious as to how Goseiger could do "Everything" better, when Goseiger didn't do much of anything at all
