Is this what entertainment is reduced to, cheap brownie points. I don't particular like it when something like this is geared towards kids. Kids want entertainment, not have progressive politics in it.
Funny, if memory serves I don't remember seeing a big post about when Trini in the 2017 Power Rangers movie was supposedly gay. I'm sick of it seeing it in media entertainment, it loses it's value and just following a cheap trend and tokenism just to feel good about yourself. I don't need to kiss up to this stuff to fell like a better person, when I'm confident in myself and right and wrong. Last edited by IndigoArms; 09-09-2021 at 04:16 PM.. |

So if simply walking away with a character at the end of an episode is too explicit and too brownie point-y, how would you go about making a gay character instead?

No one is sucking up to anyone, they're just making it so it include *everyone.* |

But let's be honest, Power Rangers and tokenism go hand in hand ever since the beginning. |

Kids wants representation. Full stop.
Entertainment is meaningless if you can't even relate to it.

I cannot relate to any of the characters or scenarios in Devil May Cry but they still have meaning to me. Entertainment doesn't and shouldn't have to be relatable in order to evoke investment or emotion from your audience. |

Cringing at the "fans" who think this is legitimately a bad thing... lol yikes. This isn't the look you wanna have and be remembered for.
Super happy they did this! It's about time. Hopefully this will pave the way to more representation (: I can't speak for all of us gay fans but I sure do know I appreciate it.

People find can find meaning in entertainment that they don't relate to. Relatability does not equate to being meaningful. I do think representation matters, though, and that what we're seeing with Izzy is a perfectly fine example of it being done in a kid's show. |

Honestly, as long as it isn't in your face or takes primary place of importance over actual character traits, it doesn't bother me if a character is LGBT or not.
I don't think representation is the problem, but rather the way the issue is presented within media circles. It seems as if some people are more concerned if a media property has the correct amount of representation in it rather than the actual quality of the work itself, subsequently calling those who disagree bigots in the process |

Representation in media is never a problem.
It's how it's done that lands it in either the category of tasteful or ham-fisted. In this case, it was tastefully done. No huge deal made about it, no big speeches, just a natural occurrence that could happen for anyone anywhere and was treated as cute like any other relationship would be shown as. That's what works. You can only call it a problem if it's done with literally no substance or soul other than checking a box on a list to please investors. Then it does nothing for anyone and only makes the community you failed to properly represent look bad because you couldn't be bothered to approach the topic in a way that didn't feel like pandering to suits and that community ends up paying for it as a result.
