-new Rider debut! I wish they gave her literally any other name than Aguliera tho, feels a little weird to make your hero name after the name the cult that groomed you gave you, no?(Like there's the element of reclaimation that you could argue that they did, but still!) There's something really cathartic about a female Rider making the "our MC will obviously need his final form to defeat him!" villian back down, I must admit! It'll probably take me a while to get used to the suit, but it's a fun debut.
-Surprised at how.....unimportant??? Genta's return ended up being? Nice to see him back though! Apparently the girls are getting their own Legacy special next, let's hope they dont suddenly disappear out of the narrative when that happens. -Ngl, if Tamaki's role in this plot merely ended at "I recongize there are things that only I can do (as a non-Rider), so I intentionally led our heroes toward Vail!", I might have been sastifated. However.... As much it is partially amusing to see a dude fail a henshin for the girl to step in and save the day....i think they were a bit too cruel to Tamaki? Like even if he's *totally* going to get that mass-produced Demons Driver, it's still quite mean to pull something like that montage! -So, essentially, Daiji's role in the Director's scheme that he'll play the part of the martyr to Fenix's cause to convince the masses to get stamped, if I'm interpeting this correctly? How interesting...(Also everyone goofing around while Daiji is getting his ass beat is hysterical!) -Speaking of...Um. I don't know how to put this subtly, but like. Maybe it isn't a good idea to have the story say that the treatment to a potenially cataphrosic event to be actually the scheme of an evil conspiracy of a goverment-affilfated organization, in this current climate? (I know, I know, that's probably me being too anxious about things and reaching where I shouldn't be, but still......) |

But this episode could've been so much more, if only they'd realized Tamaki's potential worth to it. Having Daddy tell Aguilera not to be ashamed of that name is weightless, compared to what they could've done instead. You literally already have Tamaki refusing to call her Hana, and it would've been so easy to turn that into something meaningful. If Aguilera needs convincing that name can be more than just the name of all her mistakes, who better to inspire that change in perspective than the literal living proof Aguilera can bring hope to people too? This was such a missed opportunity to present this same theme in a much more complex and character-driven way, where you could recontextualize and redefine the relationship between those two characters. Tamaki's obsession becomes more than just a joke if you give him the chance to explain himself, and Aguilera would have the chance to maybe even rethink how she views Tamaki. And I'm not even asking her to fall in love with her stalker here! What I'm saying is that, if the episode had bothered to more genuinely explore the motivations behind why Tamaki is in a rush to grab a Rider belt and protect someone who matters to him, it could've ended up being a really touching turnaround when Aguilera resolves to be the one doing the protecting instead. ...But that whole notion is consigned to one throwaway line at the end that immediately gets undercut with a gag about Tamaki still wanting to transform, and I'm sorry, but it feels like a waste. I always hate to criticize a story in this fashion -- "it'd be so much better if it were this completely different thing that *I* want to see!" -- but I feel like I'm acting in good faith here? I'm seeing what the story was going for, and I'm saying how I feel like it could've accomplished that more effectively. I've been actively trying to not tear into Revice too much, but this particular topic gets me particularly fired up. I just... I love stuff about names, I guess. Like, in real life, we all have them, and we probably don't think about it that much, but every name is like a prayer. They all hold meaning, and when I see a story that makes a point of that, it can end up leaving a real impact on me. I could go on a whole rant about how beautiful Akira's introduction in ToQger was right now, or Ultraman Geed, for example, but that's all beside the point. What's bugging me here is that when we found out about Julio's past as Tamaki-kun, those episodes of Revice left such an impact they made me never want to call him the former name ever again. When Sakura suddenly called Aguilera-sama "Hana" a few episodes back, all I could think was "wait, who the heck is Hana?". It's like... this episode did a lot to make up for the failings I thought that one had, but it did it in a way that also had some similar issues. I don't know. I don't want to just dump all over Revice like it's some bad show. The only reason I'm even complaining is because I already do like it enough that I want to see it do even better. But among a series of little missteps it seems like the writing has lately, the way Aguilera's change in name happened was a particular sore spot for me. Still, this really was a solid debut for a new Rider, all things considered.

Anyway, 1000% agree on your take about Tamaki and Hana, it would've been lovely. |

At the very least, the episode finally made me like Daiji in a form of pity for what the writer is doing to him. There's no Hiromi to humiliate anymore, so Daiji is next target.

I miss Hiromi. His departure really left a hole in the series that hasn't been filled.
Sakura and Hana's plot failed to connect with me because it forced Tamaki to become an annoying gag. The entire point of their growth from frienemies to friends/partners was that Hana needed a chance to be normal and have a friend...Except Tamaki tried that. The plot forced her to be a cold bitch to everyone but Sakura, removing any subtlety to how she viewed their relationship. Tamaki lost his only friend, then got betrayed by an ally, lost his only friend again, was forced to choose between the heroes and Aguilera, and then finally when Hana left Giff behind entirely, she was utterly cold to Tamaki, making him feel useless since he can't fight anymore. I know it might sound sexist or something to have wanted another boy in the predominantly male Kamen Rider club, but it felt like Tamaki's character arc was headed towards this direction. It also feels like Hana was never Tamaki's friend wish how she's been towards him ever since Olteca's death.

There is that announced spin-off of Jeanne and Aguilera with a supposed new Rider (which could be Tamaki). Hopefully, the guy gets his own Weekend belt and his own Wolf Vistamp back to transform.
And then Hiromi comes back and becomes the de-facto field leader of the Weekend Riders (Hikaru and Go).

It may just be an alternate version of Aguilera, an evil version probably. |

I forgot to comment on this thread yesterday when I watched the episode, but I got to think this over a bit more this way.
I've been trying to put my mixed thoughts on Revice into words, because it is a very unique show with lots of great aspects, but I often feel like it fumbles the execution of its ideas. I like this episode, but seeing Fish mention an alternate scenario where Tamaki gets to play the role of getting Hana to accept her past and old identity? That sounds so much better for both Hana and Tamaki's arcs! There is a noticable roughness to a lot of aspects of Revice where I just wish they handled things a bit differently. It isn't enough to make me dislike the show by any stretch, but I do feel like the show fails to reach its full potential. I digress though, I really do like Sakura and Hana's dynamic and it was a nice episode overall. Greatly enjoying Daiji's pain train too.
