I didn't mind having the Rangers use their suits and Zords until the final act. It was nice build up since it give time to developed the rangers. I think having Dino Rangers million of years ago was cool. It was a nice homage to Zyuranger.

This movie made my mom cry. A lot. I think that says a lot about some of the touching characters scenes that really took me by surprise. All of the rangers were well done in my opinion, and most importantly of all, they legitimately felt like real teenagers to me. The petty issues they had, or they way they dealt with the more serious ones. The way they played, teased, and joked around with each other, and the rashness of some of their decisions. I found it all pretty relatable. Their chemistry was great too, I thought.
This movie did a lot of things I wasn't expecting, and I loved that. It played with cliched expectations at least twice. When their van is being chased by the quarry security vehicles towards an oncoming train, and you just know they're gonna make it in the knick of time and cut off their pursuers? NOPE. They get hit by the damn train in such a brutal way that the entire audience didn't even know how to respond. When Rita supposedly drowns Billy, and after a beat of suspense you just know that he's going to cough up water and everyone will laugh and cry tears of joy? NOPE. "Guys, he's dead!" He straight up dies for real. Whoa, what? I mean - I put the whole "Zordon gives up his 1-Up to save the kid" thing together pretty quickly - but even then, I was not expecting that kind of scary and very real heaviness from this movie. I'll say that the mecha action definitely left a little to be desired on a lot of levels. It was fine; definitely passable for the Ranger's first outing as a team in their Zords, but it still had me wanting a little more. The robots themselves didn't feel heavy enough. Their punches, and blasts, and rams didn't carry enough weight to them for me. I guess what I'm saying is that they didn't seem powerful enough. Honestly, when I heard that the Megazord combination was fairly under-glorified, I was super bummed out. That said, personally, I didn't have much of a problem with the sequence for what it was. What I AM bummed about is that instead of giving the Megazord an actual power sword, they just use the Pterodactyl wings as dual blades. I was hoping for something similar to Daizyujin's signature attack for finishing off Goldar, but maybe they'll give us something like that in the sequel. Definitely hoping we also get weapons for the other rangers and an actual morphing sequence (using the buckles; away from the Morphing Grid room) in the sequel as well. I friggin' loved it when the Power Rangers theme started playing (complete with lyrics no less! ) as the Zords rolled into battle, but I really do wish that the song kept going on for longer. I feel like they cut the theme short right before "Mighty Morphin Power Raaangeeers!" is said - perhaps to distance this movie series from specifically the "Mighty Morphin" TV series in the long run, or something like that. But if that really is the reason for this decision, it's certainly a mixed message all things considered. Not sure. Oh yeah, also? I loved when the soundtrack would go completely TRON every once in a while. The techno beats really worked for me. Definitely worth seeing though. It's good fun and has a surprising amount of genuine emotion and heart. I thought the same thing, yeah. Last edited by IXRollOutIX; 03-24-2017 at 10:58 PM.. |

It's pretty weird that I find the third act to be underwhelming. Other than that, the thing that this movie have, is heart. Something movies like BvS, Suicide Squad, Transformers and Ninja Turtles don't.
But man that Tommy Oliver tease is actually pretty awesome.

I really dug the bit about how everybody hated Kimberly because of what she did with the girl's nude photos.
It sounds like a petty, dumb issue to an adult, but then it reminds you that these are legit teens and to them, that kind of stuff is just tragic.

While it was really cool seeing Amy Jo and JDF show up right at the end I hope the other 3 original rangers were offered cameos as well and just didn't do it for whatever reason. Always makes me feel a bit weird when only so many members of an ensemble cast get cameos.

Y'know, I'm certain that the second movie would fix a major complaint from detractors, more fight scenes and suit action. After all, Tommy should kick their asses first. I also hope that the other rangers get their weapons tbh

I thought this movie was pretty great when it was being The Breakfast Club-meets-Chronicle, which fortunately was like 75% of the movie. But once it became a full-fledged Power Rangers movie, it was disappointing.
They only used their martial arts fighting skills for like, 30 seconds before jumping in those horribly designed Zords. The never got proper henshin sequences. They totally skipped what could have been and awesome gattai sequence. They never combined weapons to form a mega canon. They never used an awesome finishing attack -- instead opting for a weird body slam move to kill Goldar. None of these things would have been hard to add to the movie. I guess I just felt like it became apparent in the last 20 minutes that the movie was not made by a genuine fan, and it was not made by someone who is good at, or cares about, super hero action. I mean, I'm glad we got Go Go Power Rangers and the Zord rollout homage -- the theater went nuts for that -- but it was one ten second shout out. The whole third act should have been stuffed with moments like those -- instead, we got ten seconds. I now understand why some of the reviews say that the movie is embarrassed to be a Power Rangers movie. Criticisms aside, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the character work and teenage stuff. All that stuff worked so well. As did the movie's humor. If the next movie can build on that stuff, while improving the action a ton and embracing it's PR/Sentai roots, I think we have a winner of a franchise on our hands. Just please, for the love of god, redesign the zords and ranger suits, they're hideous. Last edited by Kamen Rider Lucha; 03-25-2017 at 12:00 PM.. |

I personally loved the action, but I am certain the second movie would have more fights because it's Green Ranger
