Wow is it just me or is this show absolutely amazing?
Perhaps I don't watch nearly enough anime these days, but it feels so different from everything else. I don't think I've ever seen slice of life melodrama and kaiju-mecha battles blend together so fluidly. But my favorite aspect of it all is the young love. We've been treated to all forms of it. We have Koyomi's regretful past love, yomogi's unrequited but respectful affection for Yume. Yume's familial love for her sister which shows how complicated those kind of relationship are, and Chise's love for her friends and senpai. We also get peeks into Gauma's repressed love for something he seems to be longing for (perhaps a woman in his past?) Yomogi thinks he likes Yume, but it's the wrong place and wrong time. Yume could very easily return his affections (and she has begun to do so), but her world is just not in the right place because of what happened to her sister. I often think about how timing is such an important part of a relationship. I'm reminded of a letter written by John Steinbeck to his son in 1958... Steinbeck's son wrote to his father that he fell in love with a girl and is too afraid to say it for fear of rejection. In reply, John writes “If it is right, it happens — The main thing is not to hurry. Nothing good gets away.” Full letter A boy like Yomogi could very easily be rash and judgmental towards the aloof Yume. If he were impatient, he would get angry and frustrated that their relationship isn't taking off or that he's been "wasting his time" with her. But with the time they've spent together he's come to see Yume as a complex human being with faults and concerns far beyond him. Yume, at least from Yomogi's perspective is a sort of Manic Pixie Dream Girl, but we actually see the opposite, and her aloofness and strange behavior actually stems from a traumatizing event. She has had many boys vie for her attention but only one has stuck around and actually tried to get to know her. Koyomi seems to dwell on the past- something very common in interpersonal relationships. The idea of "what if" can haunt you, but by nature it is unknowable. Acceptance of things as they are is a supreme Buddhist belief. Under this lens, regret is often viewed as a selfish attachment to something you were never owed. Understanding this is a path to enlightenment. I could go on for paragraphs about each character and the microcosms they represent, but I'm just happy they are here and not treacly or at the cost of incredible mecha scenes. This show is so good.

Speaking about the episode some more though, can I just say I love the way Dynazenon/Kaiser Gridknight fights? Like there's brief moments of it just doing some cool choreography. Like this time they punch, the Kaiju catches their fist, so instead of punching again the kick so it loses its other hand to catch their foot. And then bam! A blast from their free hand right to the face! I really liked that part. |

So that building where the Kaiju Eugenicists play all day is a spoof on an actual franchisein Japan called ROUND1, a multiactivity arcade facility franchise that supposedly crams as much as they can in one building from arcade style video games to physical activities possible indoors such as bowling and pool tables, karaoke, etc.

Fighting GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD!!!
Now that I have your attention. We've been blessed to another fantastic episode, and it was definitely one of the best. So we got some background on Chise, being alone and neglected in her school days (Props to Enchilada645 for calling it), and not having any place within the team. And now she has Goldburn, and I'm reminded of Gamera the Brave in a way. So the Dragon grew faster than we thought, and not the one resembling the one in the opening, but still cool! I'm now really lost on Kano's situation, unless the guy wasn't telling us the whole truth, but to get a reaction like that out of Yume was still something. I was almost worried she was going to suicide as well. But thanks to our best boy Gauma, who might see a bit of himself in Yomogi, for getting him to bring her back, it's all okay. I was hoping for a full on combination with Gridknight as soon as he appeared, and boy, did they not disappoint. Kaiser Gridknight was glorious, from his majestic theme, to his magnificent appearance, and energy cape, he absolutely stole the show. And of course, can't forget Goldburn, who's now officially part of the team. Looking forward to what combinations he could bring to the table. And to top it all off, there was a real feel good ending for this episode, and I loved it. I also now pieced together that one shot in the opening where Koyomi pulls out the Dyna Striker, opposing someone in a school uniform... Yep, I'm sure we can all guess that's his old crush, Yomogi's boss, I can't remember her name. Anyway, I'm guessing we might get his struggle next week, or at least very soon. |

I don't know if we'll get a definitive answer one way or another as to what happened to her (and obviously that's part of what's upsetting Yume), but I also saw another theory that like Yume did in this episode Kano may have dropped her ankh and reached to far to grab it and fell. Quote:

Hard to make words. I love Chise's background here, as well as her short development along with Goldburn. What a cute little (big) golden kaiju dragon. Isolated from the rest of the class probably because of her own volition or because her artistry set her too far from the other classmates, it's all so good. The drawing part especially, personally, since she makes me think of what might have been if I didn't go in and socialize lol.
The thing with Kano, I don't think the dude is completely lying, but also not really telling the whole truth. Maybe he didn't tell the whole truth since he didn't know, didn't care much (ow), or maybe he didn't want to disclose it with Yume since it'd hurt both parties. It certainly aroused a reaction from Yume since she's probably growing impatient or frustrated with this info hunt, every turn she gets to learning about her sister it's only revealed as some vague understanding, which is not unrealistic and very true. Only the person themselves know their situation. Love that Gauma is growing supportive of Yume and Yomogi, too. Also aaaaaaaa Yume in yukata! I LOVE! King Gridknight? Sorry, Kaiser Gridknight, I love it. I want model kit. |

This episode was fantastic. So much great character building, imagery and dialog.
But... I... actually really hate the new combination? I think it’s awful. I don’t really know why yet, but I despise it. Absolutely didn't work for me. Like, Goldburn is great, I like it. Gives Chise some more exposure and it was just a fun monster that does cool stuff. But then they combine and it all falls flat for me. Nothing about this combination works for me. Again, I can’t properly describe why, but as soon as I saw it I was like "Nope, I hate it". Maybe because Dynazenon by itself is already amazing and adding random armor, a freaking cape and somehow also cramming Gridknight in there feels like too much. Trying to improve perfection and failing miserably or something. I loved this episode, everything about it, but "Kaiser Gridknight" is terrible IMO. |

They might re-do the OP now to show Goldburn behind Chise now. They probably had it in shadow to hide Goldburn until his debut.
I was pretty sure a lot of people thought that Chise was the Akane of this season because of that.

For real. The red eyes and determined face didn't help. And my speculative gears turning thinking she was going to be some sort of Belial reference.
