Anyway, I can agree with the overall sentiment here. It's the same way I'm curious what another Riku Sanjo Sentai would look like if he decided/was told to actively focus on the whole team equally. Quote:
I know it'd be controversial, but every year I hold a secret, futile hope that Toshiki Inoue will come back to Sentai. It'll never happen, but a guy can dream...

What IS Inoue doing these days? I've literally heard nothing about his career after Decade.
I'm not really sure about the Rider thing, as I think he only can go down as far as that's concerned, judging by the way his Post-Agito shows went, getting progressively worse. Doesn't necessarily mean they're shit, but the trend is definitely downward overall. |

Most recently, he wrote the Kamen Rider 1 movie with the Dark Knight-ified Ichigou. Immediately before that he was the head writer for the anime, Ushio and Tora. He keeps himself pretty busy these days. |

I'm a fan, what can I say?
I think he'd be great for Kyuranger, especially given his extended break from weekly toku shows. He'd probably come back refreshed with a lot of new ideas. But yeah, I don't see it happening. There are too many cooks in the Toei Toku kitchen these days. From what I recall, rumor at the time was he had a bad creative experience with Kiva & Decade (something to do with being forced to integrate a whole bunch of toys?) and hasn't spearheaded a Toei toku since because of that. |

Here's my list of 10 things to NOT mess up Kyuranger
10. Try give each Ranger a different personality 9. Make the villain more interesting 8. No Predictable Storyline 7. Hired a more experienced writer 6. Make the show CHARACTER-DRIVEN 5. Bring Back The HUMAN Villains! Back in old school, Most of Lead Villains are Humans! Humans can be a bad guy too! I don't mean actually humans but how about Humanoid Villains? 4. Add Signalman-Type Hero since they cannot add Tenth Ranger. Hello! The show is called Nine Ranger! NOT Ten Ranger 3. Don't rushed the story 2. Try balance the comedy and drama 1. Don't make it too Red-Centric show. Again! You got NINE RANGER! |

As to the former thought, the first Sentai I finished was Shinkenger. I felt it was terrific, but my friend who has a much deeper Sentai background found the show to be mostly shrugworthy. I've seen 10-ish more Sentai series since then, and I think I understand now. I hadn't appreciated how much *cribbing* the show did from its predecessors. This in itself isn't a big deal (which Sentai hasn't done a body-switch episode?), but with the exception of Dayuu and Fuwa Juzo, the villains were pretty bland, and there wasn't much of an attempt to tell long-form stories. (The twist near the series finale came out of nowhere and for me, it didn't have much impact.) I don't think Shinkenger was a bad series. It had a relatively strong cast whose characters were drawn reasonably well, the show oozed style, and it mostly wasn't burdened by toys *too* ridiculous. With that said, now that I've seen Gekiranger and Magiranger, I'm much less impressed with Shinkenger. In my head, I've downgraded it from "terrific" to "good." When I was watching Ninninger (and being mostly unimpressed by it), I nevertheless suspected I'd enjoy it more if I hadn't seen so many better Sentai series. I rank Ninninger not as an irredeemably bad show, but as the worst Sentai I've watched. I nevertheless watched the entire thing, and I enjoyed parts of it. I haven't followed tokusatsu writers enough to know who I hope will be running Kyuranger. Riku Sanjou confuses me, having produced shows I loved and, um, did not love. I don't want Ninninger's writer anywhere near a show I watch again. (This may be unfair. Some of my problems with the show come down to a few weak cast members. Then again, a show with a red hero played by a poor actor probably shouldn't pursue the "fetishize the red hero" trope.) Kyuranger's unprecedented cast size implies unprecedented potential, and I just don't want it written by someone content to produce a show that's mostly filler. Zyuohger's recent episodes (well, prior to the last two, which I haven't seen) has given me some cause for optimism after the last two Sentai disappointed me, and I really want our constellation Sentai to continue an upward trend. |
