Digging the look of this new age J.A.K.Q. team but for me it all comes down to the writing within the show.

This looks so fun. Curious if the robots will have standard Ranger style form in addition to the blocky mecha forms, or if Toei's really shaking up the formula and that's it

My one fear is that what makes grounded Sentai fights fun is how unrestricted the simple spandex costumes are; allowing them to flip and jump and run all over the place and exhibit a LOT of body language. A lot of that is used for humour and we've especially seen just how far they can take it in Ryusoulger and Kiramager. The mech fights however... lose that because the mechs are very blocky and bulky and heavy; there's very little manoeuvrability and there's a lot of slow, inelegant moves. It's part of why I don't like the mech parts of Sentai, but it is restricted to those sections and it does make sense to a degree for giant fights.
... bbbut now we've got those blocky heavy costumes in the grounded fights, too. And especially when we do have Zenkaiser over there who is a much more standard Sentai suit (feels weird to call him that but, you know), it's not only going to be a lot of awkward fights; it's going to be an awkward contrast between Zenkaiser impressively flipping everywhere with a lot of co-ordinated choreography while the other Zenkaigers stumble about and flail their box arms. I don't wanna be negative on this because otherwise I'm all in; I LOVE everything here and I hope Sentai keeps doing out-there stuff like this, but I am a bit fearful for the action scenes is all I'm saying. Maybe they'll pull a Hurricaneger and give them a slimmed down mode?

Maybe they'll pull a Hurricaneger and give them a slimmed down mode? I generally dislike giant robo action in Sentai. About 80% of the time it fully blows. There are some series where it's better than others (Boukenger, Go-Busters), but it's still almost always inferior to the ground combat. My favorite part of Sentai is the ground combat. That's what I crave. There's no way on Earth the ground combat will be good with these suits. Full stop. They're far far far far farrrrrrr too bulky. Will they make up for it by upping the ante on the giant fights? Maybe. We can only hope. That said, from the leaked shoot photos, it does look like they'll have somewhat slimmed down forms as well. I am pretty much completely over Sentai at this point, but this looks just different and weird enough that I'm going to check it out.

Interesting. Normally, mecha are designed as toys and then a suit version is made, whereas the Sentai suits are presumably designed mainly as suits, and then toys are later made of them. I assume that's more or less what happened here, but this is a unique Sentai in which it sure looks like the mecha *are* the hero suits for most of the cast. (I guess it also means that most of the cast won't be involved in henshin sequences, unless casting reveals the mecha will have human forms.)
I can't help but notice the hinges on ZenkaiMagine's wings, which makes me wonder about how the toys will work. We know that they each have an alternate form, and from the start, there will be a pair of two-part combinations, but how they'll work isn't immediately apparent to me. In terms of combining them all together (possibly with an additional, as-yet-unrevealed component), it looks like Gaon and Zyuran's feet are roughly identical, so I suspect they become either the arms or, more likely, the legs of a larger combination. Vroom looks a lot like he folds up to become a lower body. <strike>WashiPink</strike>Magine just confuses me; an arm, maybe? Of course, that's all conjecture. I'm guessing the alternate forms are super-simple and basic, and we can kinda get a sense of how they work from the suit kibble. For the two-part combinations, I'm guessing they must connect back-to-back It looks like Zyuran has an asymmetrical shoulder detail, and I can't quite tell whether Gaon has one for the opposite shoulder. I'm guessing the belt hinges forward, so the gears must be pretty small. Also, I'll give the gears this: they're sleeker than just about any collectible we've seen in years. One thing that surprises me a bit is that none of what we've seen of the core team so far references any Sentai post-Boukenger; I was assuming there'd at least be a nod to something from the past ten years. I suspect the sixth hero will end up being Gokaiger-themed, and I think I'd be a little shocked if we didn't have Captain Marvelous return in some capacity, not unlike Decade's appearance in Zi-O. |

I get they're all references to past mecha, but in that same vein, they also all look like bootleg product versions of those mecha
