DS' Final Thoughts on Legend Heroes: Three Kingdoms Oh man, I wasn't exactly sure what I expected when I first sat down to watch Legend Heroes, but lemme tell ya, I don't think anything could've prepared me for it. And I mean that in the best way possible! This show was fantastic! Is it perfect? No, but there's alot to love about this low budget toku from South Korea, to the point it's become one of my favorite toku ever. But first, let's get the singular big negative out of the way... The Weakest Aspect This is weird to talk about, because Legend Heroes' biggest weakness is directly linked to and parallel to its biggest strength; And that's its character focus. See, here's the thing, the characterization and interaction in this show is so strong that whenever the show does fumble on the focus some characters get, it really stands out. And I feel like the biggest victim of this is Sun Ce, and by extension, Sun Qian. The Sun family is meant to represent the third "kingdom" in this adaptation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, so it's such a shame that they are so out of focus compared to Liu Bei and Cao Cao. Granted, the original story is also guilty of this to an extent, and plenty of other adaptations are too, but there was still way more than enough material that I really felt they could've used. Heck, at least the SD Gundam adaptation was nice enough to give Sun Qian a super mode like the other Emperors! I guess what it boils down to is that I wanted more of these already interesting characters, and hey, that's not so bad of a complaint to have, is it? There were also a few moments from the original story I would've loved to have seen them keep, but admittedly it'd be hard to recreate some of those so it's really not a big deal at all. THE GOOD STUFF I just noted the character writing, and oh man was it ever great! I absolutely loved this cast overall, and this show is incredibly full of great character moments. From the silly antics of Bulk and Skull to the heavy drama in Cao Cao's' story, this show has pretty much everything I could ever want out of its diverse cast. The overarching lesson of the show was one that I also never would've expected coming from a kid's' show, but is one that I highly respect the writers on doing: The lesson that some dreams can't be achieved, and that not everyone can be truly happy, but despite that, you need to keep moving forward not just for the good of the world, but most importantly for your own self worth. I feel like Gongsun Zan showed this best. She might've lost her dream of being a grand martial artist, but she found an all new dream in business and is every bit as happy as she was before; If not more so. Outside of those, the action could be surprisingly good when it wanted to be, and alot of the suit designs are some of my favorites that I've ever seen in a Toku. If this show ever gets a high end action figure line, you better believe I'll be buying a ton of it. MY FAVORITE THINGS Favorite Character: Without any sort of doubt, LIU BEI!!! I never once felt that they messed his character up, and his actor made him an absolute delight to watch ontop of the excellent characterization that this show had to offer. And in the end it made me really happy that this toku decided to deviate from history in terms of the final outcome, as it only felt like the proper conclusion after all was said and done. Favorite Episode: Episode 6. I'm a huge sucker for friendship tropes, especially when they're done well, so having an entire episode dedicated to the friendship of Liu Bei and Gongsun Zan and highlighting how the two complete each other was absolutely top notch. And with the added bonus of keeping their relationship entirely platonic too! It hit me right in the feels in all of the best ways and was the episode where I knew I was hooked. Favorite Suit: Ma Chao. This is a first for me actually, as in most adaptations of Three Kingdoms I tend to love Zheng Fei the most. But what can I say? Not only is it a great design in its own right, but having it tied to my favorite two-parter in the show(Episodes 26 and 27), as well as making sure that Liu Bei focuses entirely on boxing whenever he uses the Ma Chao piece made it an absolute highlight every time it showed up. FINAL THOUGHTS Seriously, if anyone's been reading this thread without actually watching the show itself, you're doing yourself an incredible disservice. It's free on YouTube for pete's' sake! Go give it a shot! I really do feel like this is a show that has something to dang near everyone. In the end, despite some minor fumbles here and there, Legend Heroes: Three Kingdoms is a fantastic ride full of great characters, an engaging story, and is overall just a ton of fun to watch. I was highly entertained and it's become one of my favorite Toku, right alongside the likes of MMPR and Kuuga. And if the same mind behind this show should ever make, say Legend Heroes: Warring States, you'd better believe I'd be there to see it. I give Legend Heroes a very strong 5/6.

I appreciate how each suit had an animal motif and unique weapon. Especially because I felt this show basically pulled off Ryuki's original concept: a new hero every episode (or, well, a new hero every fortnight).
I love Imperial's sword and just GAH ITS SO GOOD On the topic of Sun Ce and Sun Qian, I would loved to have seen a combo of his three suits; form coulda been called Legend Hero Dynasty or something. EDIT: I also find it impressive how this show got, like, 2-3 nighttime fight scenes. Those seem like a rarity in other shows! I love this show a lot Last edited by MangaArtist18; 08-04-2021 at 09:57 AM.. |

I was always lagging just a bbbbit behind the thread for most of the back half, unfortunately, but I have very much been eagerly keeping up with this show, and now I'm at the end! Crazy to think we're finally here, huh?
I'm going to refrain from trying to go too in-depth on my overall thoughts, because I seriously need to give myself a break sometimes, but as is apparent from what posts I did make throughout, I feel this is a genuinely fantastic series, and I'm genuinely grateful to GrandComplete for making this thread, because I'd almost certainly still be sleeping on it otherwise. If me talking about Kuuga in any way lead to this, well then that's just one more reason I'm glad I made that thread. It started out pretty casual; speaking very personally, I think a huge part of the fun for me at first was simply the nostalgic feeling of watching tokusatsu in a foreign language, which Japanese only kinda feels like anymore with how much I've surrounded myself with it. But yeah, for me too, somewhere along the line, Legend Heroes became much more than that, and I realized how much I was being entertained by it entirely on its own merits. It's a series clearly made with a ton of heart that surprised me with its legitimate storytelling chops and strong grasp on what makes a hero tokusatsu show click. It's blatantly aping a number of other shows, but it's doing it intelligently and in a way where the end result is something truly unique. This show made me laugh, it warmed my heart, broke it a few times, kept me on the edge of my seat throughout, and it even educated me a little bit, as weird as that is to say! I had an epiphany about how much of an impact Legend Heroes has made on me a few weeks back. See, I'm as big a fan of Gundam as I am of tokusatsu, and had been sleeping on the recent SD Gundam World series because the whole Three Kingdoms theme was something I wasn't familiar with that didn't hold any appeal to me... but then it suddenly hit me that, uh, that's not exactly true anymore! Which lead to me finally watching Sangoku Soketsuden, so that's actually two shows this thread has gotten me to watch! (And while I'm on the subject, if anyone else would like their Three Kingdoms fix with cute but cool robots, that's also freely available on YouTube subbed in multiple languages!) So that whole experience was something of an affirmation of how much I'd gotten out of deciding to hop on this train nearly a year ago. I'm pretty sure I'd never heard of this show beforehand and now it's something I can't believe used to not be in my life. Thanks again for making this thread, and for having the dedication to see it through to the end.

Jumping in on this now since there's probably not gonna be any other time after this.
I also watched Legend Heroes and greatly enjoyed it (surprise surprise). Technically, I had actually seen it 2-3 years ago (I think it was when Battle of the Red Cliffs first came out) but I still remember a fairly large chunk of it due to the show being my first real exposure to the Three Kingdoms in media. I remember being legitimately surprised it came out, as the show's predecessor series SFX Fantasy Rayforce sadly never got past the initial planning stages due to lack of financial investors: Obliviously you can see that several elements from Rayforce would eventually find life again in Legend Heroes, so admittedly no real loss there. Anyhow, back to Legend Heroes. As others have stated, the one of the show's best qualities is absolutely it's characters. The show probably has more recurring characters than the entire cast of some rider series, and while not all of them are developed as Liu Bei, the show still manages to get you to care about them. Like, they had an episode about one of the Mi Zhu's buddies. Seriously! An entire episode centered around trying to get you to care about one of the side character's best friends, and y'know what? It totally worked! I still remember everything about it from the guy's Skunk themed armor, to his stink grenade launcher, to the scene where Sima Yi tries to be deadly serious as he presents a regular gas mask to Cao Cao acting like it's some epic counter measure to the stink grenades. Speaking of things I remember in great detail, favorite suit (excluding the supers like Imperial and Sima Yan) hands down: Legend Hero Yu Ji/Zhang Lu (the blind Peacock guy). I immediately gravitated toward it when I noticed it during the dream sequence in ep 1, and it is still my favorite of the regular suits. The black and orange/yellow(?) color scheme, the long coattails/skirt thing with matching capelet, the spiked fan weapon, the giant spiked fans on his back, and the added detail of the eye guards on his helmet being massive since he's blind and therefore wouldn't need to see out of them, god there is so much going on with the suit I totally dig all of it. |

No, but that's only because Zhuge Liang ended up being even more to my tastes. (And like, by far. I adore that man.) Cao Cao was still my second favorite guy the whole time, even as he was making some *extremely* boneheaded decisions.
I think it really ended up coming together for me in the finale especially, where Liu Bei draws a comparison to what's happened to Cao Cao and his initial trouble with Imperial. Liu Bei is surrounded by people who care about him and support him, but Cao Cao spent like 75% of the series brooding in a dark room kept company by a guy actively trying to twist his goals to his own ends. When you think about it like that, the whole final arc definitely makes a lot of sense, and, you know, Cao Cao ends up in a good place, so all's well that ends well, right?
