The movie just came out today and what is everyone's opinion on the film? It was hardly a great movie or the best Godzilla movie, but it was nice to see a proper King Ghidorah for once. We haven't had an evil KG in over 20 years since Rebirth of Mothra III. The fight scenes and the last battle are a total blast to watch.
Not to mention, the movie did have a good amount of practical effects in it and was not a total CG fest. The worst part about the movie is the main cast of characters and some of the dialogue that they wrote in the movie. They even have a bad cringy joke where someone says "Oh My God Zilla" and I was like As a fan of Godzilla and Michael Dougherty's work, it was a fun pop corn flick. It is worth watching if you are a fan, but don't hope for anything great with story telling and characters. 7/10 at the moment, but that can change over time.

the movie was everything i wanted it to be, and everything i wanted the terrible 2014 film to be. its cheesy and full of fun action, the monsters were done absolute justice (id argue this is the best portrayal of ghidorah in any form, at least in a long time) and i honestly found the human drama parts endearing
its obviously not a masterpiece, but as a godzilla film? absolutely worth a watch |

I liked it, I still wanted more Monsters and less Humans.
The critics saying there's too much monster action and not enough human drama I think are out of their minds. There were quite a few points I was just getting sick of seeing the humans whining and wanted to get to the monsters fighting. in the Toho films I often like the human characters and want to see more of their story, but for some reason in the USA movies I almost always find the human characters to be boring or just sort of unlikable. Brian Cranston in 2014 I found very interesting but we all know how that turned out. So far he's the only Legendary character I've found interesting. I can't believe that girl in KotM got paid over a million dollars to be in the movie and basically do nothing. She really did nothing and really didn't have much dialogue. She ran around a bit, that's about it. What a pay-day for a bit of running around. The monsters looked great. I really liked Rodan and Ghidorah a lot and thought they were portrayed very well. Mothra didn't really get much screen time at all, I feel like if you added up all her screen time it's probably less than a couple minutes. Godzilla of course was great, and my favorite character. |

I enjoyed it; I wanted monster fights, got monster fights. It wasn't exactly deep, but it was fun.

Lowest of all kong and godzilla movie box office wise in ast two decade. Looks like if next year movie dupe and bomb then the rights goes back to japan. 2016 one looks like its setting up an alien evolution or 1998 swarm.

It's a shame that KOTM isn't doing better. I think the critics saying it sucks really isn't helping.
I feel like kaiju movies are a unique genre and either you get it or you don't, and it seems most critics don't like kaiju movies. They say, "too many monsters and not enough human drama",.. and I felt the complete opposite, too many unlikable humans and drama and not enough monsters. So far I don't think any of the USA Godzilla movies have struck a good balance between the human story and the monsters, and worse all three USA Godzilla movies I found the characters to be very 2 dimensional and pretty much unlikable. (where in most of the Toho films I actually enjoy the human stuff just as much as the monster stuff.) It feels like Toho tries to make an interesting movie that also has monsters, whereas the USA is making a movie with monsters that also includes some humans. All that said, Rodan/Ghidorah/Mothra/and Godzilla looked fantastic in the new movie. The designs are great and the action and fighting was really good. I do think Godzilla should have good human characters in them because Godzilla and other monster movies have good humans in their films before. I don't want Godzilla to be brainless like the Bayformers movies (Even Godzilla vs. Megalon has more going for it than Transformers 1-5 IMO).

It's like it's time for an 90/10 godzilla / human film. I feel like I liked kong more than two Godzilla movies becayse more action spread out and the atmosphere of danger in stranded island like first predator movie. I can't see kong winning without super powers like 60s. His primitive abilities and agility only goes so far. Either kong loses as a hero defending humans or he win via help or other circumstances that injure gidzilla. I'm sire there won't be pacific rim or monster verse if kongvGod bomb next year. This one like detective pikachu try to be faithful to lore and myth while westernizing it, but people prefer Aladdin. Disney is banking merchandise and ticket sales with live action remake, marvel, star war, pixar, princesses, etc. I don't know sbout mulan or shazam or Shangchi Bruce lee movies catering china. The marketing for this godzilla movie was pretty bad. |

for me personally I actually found the characters in Kong:Skull Island to be interesting.
I liked 'The Tracker', I liked 'The guy who's been there for 40 years', I like the interaction with the characters and the light humor. Kong Skull Island (imo) is a really good Kaiju movie because like some of the best Godzilla movies you enjoy the human part of the story as much as you enjoy the Monster side of the story. For whatever reason not only do I not like the 2014 and 2019 Godzilla humans, I actually found them somewhat unlikable, (except Brian Cranston who I thought was great, and under utilized.) I didn't care what happened to them and felt they were very one-dimensional and not very interesting at all. and I'm truly shocked that the one girl in KOTM got paid over a million dollars to basically just run around and look scared a bit. Was there any acting done? She yelled, "Mom!"... and uh,... ran around a bit,.. and... laid in a bathtub, and ... yeah that's about it. And as much as I loved seeing the monsters (and maybe it's just because I saw it in 3d?) but I didn't find the fights all that easy to follow. Some were easier than others, and Rodan I thought was exceptional, but there were definite times I had a hard time figuring out what had just happened. All that said I still enjoyed the movie and was very excited to see Ghidora, Rodan and Mothra done up in CGI. Last edited by KaijuUltraFan; 06-06-2019 at 01:34 PM.. |
