Yasuko Kobayashi is well-known writer in Tokusatsu industry but she’s also head-write anime shows like Attack on Titan and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Yasuko Kobayashi is known for lots of characterization: definition, exploration, development in her own shows and her mantra is "Show, Don’t tell" and it will be a main element in her stories. She won't tell you anything outright, and instead convey through hints, dialogues and character emotions. Not to mention that most of her work on Toku shows tend to end on Bittersweet note. (Except ToQger) So, let’s ranked her Sentai/Rider shows from best to worst SUPER SENTAI * Gingaman (Lighthearted) * Timeranger (Dark) * Shinkenger (Dark) * Go-Busters (Dark) * ToQger (Lighthearted) KAMEN RIDER * Ryuki (Dark) * Den-O (Lighthearted) * OOO (Lighthearted) * Amazons (Dark) BTW, This is NOT my ranking just to let you know. NOTE: I still can’t believe the head writer of Amazons is same head writer of ToQger. She went from writing about kids having imagination to beasts killing each other in gruesome way. |

OOO, Den-O and Go-Busters are absolutely amazing for me. All three had such a profound effect on me and I continue to think about them long after I've seen all of them, and that's the magic of her writing -- I may not be heavily into her series as I'm watching them (though I still enjoy them), but over time I find myself thinking more about them and find my opinion improving. I think that's one of the greatest things you can achieve as a writer; if what you wrote is something people will be thinking about long after they've watched it. At one point, I ranked OOO the lowest of the Kamen Rider shows I'd seen (Fourze, W, OOO and Gaim), but now it's become my favourite Tokusatsu show, and right now is probably my favourite piece of media... at all. Hindsight is a wonderful thing when the creative team gives you something to look at.
Shinkenger and Toqger aren't quite as up there for me, but they're still frankly wonderful shows and I loved their casts a lot. A lot of what I just said above applies here, just to a lesser degree. It's literally just "I could go on and on and on about these shows forever, but they're not the absolute tippy-toppiest tier things I've ever seen in my life". Ryuki, as I'm getting the chance to say a lot on Kamen Rider Die's thread; is a show that isn't for me, but is a show that I've found myself growing a lot of respect for and I've even recently been finding I like more about it than I thought. Amazons I tried to watch, but couldn't make it to the end of episode 1. Much later I tried to watch it again, and I couldn't make it to the end of episode 2. Perhaps one day, in the far future, I'll be able to make it to the 37 minute mark of episode 3.

Although, it’s ironically they wanted a dark Kamen Rider show and yet they complain about the show being ultra too dark. I mean they’re okay with Netflix shows like Daredevil being dark but not okay with Amazons. Have you guys watch Joker? |

I heard many people dropped the show due of Amazons being very too dark especially second season with a lots of moral ambiguity, graphic violence and tragedy and it’s get worse as time go by in term of darkness.

(Obviously stuff like Daredevil and Joker is not just fine, but very well done and very important; but everyone wanting to cash in on that stuff means we reach that point where you just want to see a show where someone remembers what a smile is)

The problem with darker tone is that people usually misused it or wasted its potential. Yes, darker stories can be more compelling, but it needs to be done right. I think it's also impirtant that you can't really make the show depressing. Or at least if you want to, make it good.
Batman v Superman was widely criticized because theg are obssessed with dark tones, they ended up becoming too bleak and depressing. To me, if you want to make a dark story, you also need to include optimism. Nothing beats the idea of 'a glimmer of light in the dark', if you understand what that means. On another note, I loved the storyline in Amazons season 2, however I hated that the gore becomes too gratuitous in it. Season 1 is violent, but season 2 felt like a bad fetish.

My favourites out of those are Timeranger,Shinkenger,ToQger,Ryuki and OOO, Go-Busters is somewhere in the middle for me, I haven’t seen either Gingaman or Amazons and least favourite, sad to say it, out of those would be Den-O. For me being overrated is just the worst crime in most media.

Amazons in general is a weird beast. I definitely wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to bail out after an episode or two. For both seasons, it wasn't until the back halves, when I could see the story coming together, where I really got into them.

Oh man, I can relate hard to that. Season 2 had a super compelling narrative that was a lot more daring and clever than the first season (which was already both of those things to begin with), and I find myself thinking back on it a lot more as a result, but my most vivid memories of actually watching it are just laughing at how over-the-top the drawn-out Amazon murder scenes got. Season 2 is literally the one where a guy drinks brains through a straw. I'm just not sure what to do with the tone that creates?
Amazons in general is a weird beast. I definitely wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to bail out after an episode or two. For both seasons, it wasn't until the back halves, when I could see the story coming together, where I really got into them. And later on during that episode where the Amazon's girlfriend was mistaken as the Amazon and she got hurt, and as her monstrous boyfriend visited her, she said she doesn't mind if her boyfriend eats her. His instinct? Bites her head off just because they wanna show decapitated head. That's fucked up for the sake of being fucked up. Despite that, I still love season 2 primarily on how our main protagonist is the main threat of the season, and the fact that he was killed offscreen.

I’m gonna say that Gingaman is the only work of hers that I’ve actually liked or wanted to watch entirely of my own choice (the rest of the time, I just had a slot free and decided to go for a show I hadn’t watched).
