Let's start with the egg laying.
Monotremes are an archaic mammal that retain the cloaca of their pre-mamalian ancestors. Due to some quirk of Australia's niche-ness, the separation of the cloaca into 2-3 different orifices never occurred in the early monotremes. The tail, webbed feet and bill shape are easily explained through convergent evolution found in beavers, otters, certain ducks and the Roseate Spoonbill. The feet evolved over time to become larger and more capable of catching and pushing back water for finer propulsuon and control in swimming, while the tail became wider to aid in general propulsion. The bill is specialized for the aquatic lifestyle of straining water and scanning it through special nervous sensors that are an example of divergent evolution from the common ancestor shared with the echidna, who developed a long snout and tongue for insect extraction. The venom and bill itself I haven't the faintest clue though. |
