Since it was the 42nd anniversary of Gorenger and since I've been on a bit of a Sentai kick thanks to Kyuranger, I figured why not make a weekly discussion topic on the all the Sentai mechs over the years. Some of these early threads will feature mechas from two series since a lot of the 70's/80's series only had one or two mecha's. First is both Gorenger and JAKQ.
Variblune A very simple looking Vtol style jet. The upside down wind blades and slight bird features gives it some distinctiveness. It's very much a 70's style design so there isn't much to say here. Varidorin The often forgotten 2nd jet for the Gorenger's, it's kind of a shame that the Varidorin isn't as iconic as the Variblune as I honestly think it has the better design. The overall shape and colours on it are just much more interesting than the Variblune and it even has all the same features from the upside down wind blades, the bird features which are more pronounced, to the propellers on the back. It really does look like a natural upgrade over it. Sky Ace It's a nice looking jet, that's really all I got to say on it. I mean there's some interesting design bits like the arch-like design on the back of the jet and colours wise it works fine but after that there's nothing else about it that I can comment on. It's just a nicely designed jet. Next week the first two actual robots of Sentai, from Battle Fever J and Denziman. Last edited by Byg42; 04-06-2017 at 09:57 PM.. |

I'm not really a fan of either of the Gorenger mecha honestly. I'm not sure why though and every time I try and think about it, the only thing that comes to mind is how... silly they look. That's probably pretty funny given some of the designs in recent years but still. I like the JAKQ mecha though. There really isn't anything that stands out about other then the spades that decorate it but its perfectly fine for what it is.

Variblune is okay. I'm kind of disappointed to say that it just looks so uninteresting. Boxy and chunky, it just doesn't interest me. I like the idea of it being a VTOL jet, but it's successor does it a lot better. The white is also a bit overpowering, but I think that's less because there's a lot of it, and more because the red just seems splashed on. No style to it.
I think the Varidreen is my fav of Gorenger's jets. It has a better color balance between the red and white, and the rainbow pattern on the wings pop, even if it's still just a small speckle of color. The more bird like design it has gives it a stylish look, also helped by the sleeker design as a whole. I wish this was the first (Or only) jet the Gorengers used. Just looks so cool~ Sky Ace also one ups the Variblune. It just looks and feels like a flying battleship. I know, scale wise, it's about the same size as the Variblune, but visually, it looks like it could obliterate it in a fight It has a good distribution of bulk, making it still feel like it could fly, but also looking like it's a fighter.

Design-wise the Varidorin probably gets the majority vote compared to the Variblune but I love the Variblune more because I think a flying bulldog is much more frightening than a basic eagle. Eagles are frightening too don't get me wrong, but a bulldog that flies? That is gonna mess with someone's head. If you ever see bulldogs that are jacked like Brock Lesnar I am gonna run like I have the speed force. Plus the fire decal looks cooler on Variblune and I like how clunky and rugged it looks. Plus I think JAKQ got the avian gunship on lock with their design. Clearly a much better rendition.
