Y'know, only the best toku ever.
Onto Buildowa. I thought it was a good opener. I think the Build Driver is both ridiculous and has probably the longest, goofiest henshin sequence in Rider history - so, obviously, I LOVEET. Build, despite having a nominally more traditional design than Ex-Aid, feels even MORE plastic-y than that which, of course, makes sense with the toy motif. So, being that Sento created Build and neither of the villainous Riders have comparable drivers, this appears to be a "one Rider, one secondary Rider" show with the other guys not strictly being Riders. Maybe? The plot seems like it's seeded a lot of fertile ground, making me a bit less worried, so that's good. The fact that all attendees at the disaster were "changed" is big. I love that the Smash monsters are transformed humans. I have a feeling that it was Sento who slapped the box. The Walls are gonna get a lot of use, I'm thinking. Glad to see my theory of Toei taking elements of popular culture was borne out (the walls are remenicent of Attack on Titan). The "science friction" of the henshin and Rider kick with the physical equations floating through the air is freaking bizarre and will take some extra disbelief suspension, though this is a part of most neo-Heisei era shows for me. I typically roll with it after a few episodes (see: LVL1 mode Ex-Aid). The CGI - if they're going to get that goofy on the CGI, I say take it to the extreme with the bike fight nonsense! It just dawned on me - Sento is a neo-Heisei Rider in a Heisei Rider plot. This should get interesting!

Im kind of confused on how I feel about it. I feel like they spent too much time with shots of people looking at pandoras box, build shaking bottles, talking about his amnesia, and talking about the wall. That and I feel the name of the episode to feel odd as there is almost no real chemistry between any characters so far. I can tell you nothing about any of them that I didn't know before I watched it. So far the cast in my mind is Build, escaped prisoner guy, a reporter, a government worker who might be the bad guy, a guy who likes to use french and runs a cafe where build sleeps in the fridge, evil unicorn batman, and some sleepy girl who powers a microwave that lets build use smash juice.
It has a lot of good bits and seems promising but so far my opinion of Kamen Rider Build is some assembly required. Last edited by ColdIron; 09-05-2017 at 01:31 AM.. |

- A pretty likable main character. I was expecting Sento to be obnoxious but he's mostly just enthusiastic, and having a bit of an attitude is a nice change of pace for the lead this year. The whole scientist shtick adds justification to the piles upon piles of possible Forms Build has too. Of course he'd want to try mixing and matching all his toys constantly, how else is going to find what works and what doesn't?

- Toei living up to that article where they said Build would take all the good bits of every Kamen Rider show. We've finally got a cafe again, for crying out loud! And Build's helmet has the "tears" under his eyes! I didn't even notice that until now! Also Build is actually a vigilante who has beef with the authorities. I like stuff like that. Hopefully it makes for some drama down the line.

Build has serious story since beginning. I think Build first episode is more serious than Ex-Aid first episode.
I really curious about origin of Rabbit and Tank Full Bottles. Before first episode, I think Sento already has Rabbit, Tank, Lion, Cleaner, and Gorilla Full Bottles. I love Build and his science finisher Hmm...I has feeling Ryuga will be become Smash. What if Ryuga unconsciously turned into Smash in future episodes? |

I was impressed with this first episode in a way I haven't been since Wizard. That Sento is a little arrogant delights me and partially makes up for his cartoon hair. This episode felt to me like it gave him more of a discernible personality than the last couple of Riders did when they debuted.
I'm also very excited by the relationship between Sento and... um... Claws. (I'm behind on learning names.) A lot of the secondary Rider relationships I've seen have felt samey to me, and I like that Claws is inherently tied to the larger plot and he's around in the first episode. I'm a little puzzled; do we have an official Romanization for KnightRogue/NightRogue/Night Rogue/NitRogue? I thought it was the latter, which seemed bizarre to me until I realize it might not be "night" and "rogue" but rather wordplay of "nitro" + "rogue." The setup of a range of mysteries really worked for me. Like many others, I suspected Sento opened the Box, but it sure didn't look like Sento under that cap. Also, I realized that the show did a blink-and-you'll-miss-it on what's certain to be a major plot point, which is that people immediately present when the Pandora Box opened underwent severe personality changes. Now, let's see, Goatee-Administrator and Underling were both there, right? I'm having trouble imagining a scenario in which Goatee-Administrator isn't Nitrogue. His final scene of the episode definitely screamed "villain." What kind of personality alteration did *he* undergo? (Of course, if Sento was the box-opener, maybe he's also experienced a dramatic personality change.) The only thing that didn't totally thrill me was the fight sequences. The Drill Crusher may have replaced the SunglassSlasher and the Gashacon Breaker as my least favorite modern Rider weapons. |

According to a Ganbaride card, it's Night Rogue. And he sounds like a Dahlek

For me, nothing will ever be worse than whatever that giant plastic thing that Specter and Necrom used. I miss the days when Toei tried to make Rider weapons look at least a little bit realistic and not like obvious toys.
