I'm definitely happy to see them try new stuff with Zenkaiger. We've had like 40 seasons of combining interconnected robots.
I actually think the limited half and half approach had good timing, as Dynazenon really blew everyone out of the water with the whole combining robot thing this year. Toy wise, I think we're going to see Bandai spend more time readjusting to the merchandise income model. Sentai has changed significantly in the past few years in terms of earnings and viewership. They really had to mix things up and we'll probably see a lot more experimentation and new ideas.

I feel it's less about having a lot of mecha combining into one big one, and more about the interconnectivity.
Gaoranger's system never allowed for a combo of more than 7 (And that's solely using the semantics of Striker's legs being 2 pieces and the elephant not actually combining. Realistically, it only really allows for a 6 piece combo) So, for every figure you got, your additional figures instantly got more play value, even if you couldn't pile them all onto each other a la G12 Formation. Hell, a common criticism is that ultra combinations tend to be messy, cluttered piles of junk that detract from the original combo's charms. Also, I think going from Ryusoulger's lego-esque combination style that let your imagination run wild to a more bog standard "Piece goes here and ONLY here" combo for Kiramager, with no interconnectivity between any of the main mechs, it can feel like a bit of a downgrade. |

In my opinion, I feel like people much too much stock into the mecha combining with one another? I saw a lot of talk like this during Kiramager and now for Zenkaiger, people saying that the lack of mecha combinations made the toylines inherently worse and that Sentai needs to get back to it asap, which I can't get behind at all.
I confess I'm not into the Cuttaner and Rikki designs, but that's entirely a matter of taste, and Sentai has done sillier mecha in the past. |

What's the difference between the DX, GP and SG gears, besides how you get them?

Well this is... interesting? A Premium Bandai set of all 45 Sentai gears (Lupat has two remember) plus Zenkaiser, all in Die-Cast; for 35,200 Yen. Comes with a special plate/packaging that nicely puts them on display. For reference, this comes to about 765 Yen per gear discounting the plate and packaging.
If you've got the money and you absolutely adore Zenkaiger, the Sentai Gears or both this might be a great way for you to get them all in one package rather than dealing with individual Candy Toy and Gashapon waves; especially when it gives you a nice way to display it! For me personally even though Zenkaiger has already become one of my favourite Tokusatsu shows, it's just a bit too much -- but that's me! https://p-bandai.jp/item/item-1000160548/

And that means there's Dark Gear releases planned for every single normal gear except Zenkaiser! Pretty wild. The blog notes that the SG set contains Kiramager because the normal Kiramager gear didn't make it into the SG line; only being through pyjama pack-ins and stuff. So that's neat!
