Alright guys my thread title is a tad confusing but hopefully this post will explain it. For Pacific Rim Toys we have NECA whom I think has a master license for the movie. I is NECA or Del Toro mentioned that the property is ripe for toys. I mean it's giant monsters VS giant robots, that right there, no matter what age I am, gets me excited. If I was 5 I would want a toyline of that. If I was 109 that would still excite me.
So I'm betting NECA will go for "A" Pacific Rim 2 toy license should Guillermo Del Toro's plans for a sequel go forward. However NECA primarily caters towards collectors. With possibly more monsters and Jaegers in the sequel, what toy company do you think would do a great job for a MASS MARKET PACIFIC RIM 2 TOYLINE? Mattel is a big company but I don't think they would be a good pick. Actually most of their action figure lines haven't really sold well in the past few years IIRC. Dark Knight Rises, Green Lantern, et al. Man Of Steel was popular but the toyline aside from the Movie Masters sits, and MOS premiered a few weeks back. Not to mention their toys just don't seem like a lot of fun(aside from Movie Masters). Hasbro ....I used to think they would do great but lately they seem to be scaling back hardcore and emphasizing cheaper made toys while maintaining the same pricepoints they've used through the years. I think Bandai Of America might be a good choice. They're used to sculpting monsters for Ben 10, Godzilla, et al. Vinyl Kaiju and Jaegers to fit in with their existing vinyl toys. Who wouldn't want a 4" human figure with a giant Jaeger to pilot? That would be AWESOME. Also ever since getting a PLEX employee to work with them since 2011 or 2012, I've noticed some more innovation within their lines. Some like Ben 10 and even Power Rangers Samurai have incorporated some plamo elements(figure kits for Ben 10 at TRU, and the transforming Samurai Morphers from last year). Jaeger figure kits anyone? Discuss! Also this is under the assumption that NECA would still be making collectors figures like they are doing now in 7" and 18" scale, this thread is mainly for a mass market Pacific Rim 2 line catered to kids.

I think NECA is eaxctly where it should stay. Their toys tend to have fantastic sculpts 50/50 paint jobs and poor articulation. But they look so damn good that I love them. IF DCUC and MOTUC have taught us anything it's that Mattel is a bunch of cheap bastards, Hasbro has stepped their game up with Marvel Legends so it's possible but not likely, and BOA. Don't get me started on why that would be an awful choice.
NECA has demonstrated that they have a secure following of fans who collect their stuff. Sometimes no matter what the property is. And while series 1 of the Pacific Rim toys is a little lackluster it looks like things will pick up with series 2. Their toys tend ot break rather easily being made of vinyl plastics but I've yet to hear of any serious issues with their Rim figures.

We deffinately need something. Hasbro's products are improving (TF 2013 Generations oh my God) so I would like to see them get the license. We'd probably get various size classes of varying articulation and itricacy, which would mean more variety of characters that we can mingle to get and accurately scaled line up. Hell, we'd probably even get the barely-seen Kaiju and Jaegers. Mattel is a joke in the toy business these days, and BOA is, well, themselves. I don't know where you get this idea of giant pilotted Jaegers from.
For a property ripe for toys, we so far only have three. And they're not very good. And the next wave includes a retool. This is not how you handle a property like Pacific Rim. I don't even own any of the toys out because they're exclusive to TRU. I'm a collector and I still can't get them! That's crap, man. There might as well not even be a toyline considering how small and limited it is. Last edited by SPLIT LIP; 07-14-2013 at 12:19 PM.. |

What about Bandai Japan's lines? The Kaiju and Jaegers seem perfect for MonsterArts & Super Robot Chogokin.

There is a ridiculous amount of potential there. With all the different accessories the Jaeger used it was basically screaming "TOY ME!" The 8" figures are totally meh and the 18" with no Plasma Cannons or Rocket Elbows or swappable hands and what doesn't seem to actually be a huge amount of articulation just isn't going to cut it. Great suggestions for Monster Arts and SRC's guys but those would also fall under collectors' lines. Nonetheless I'd love to see tamashii make them!

Mass release toy lines for movies haven't been doing that great, even when the movie's a hit.
Though to play along I'm going to say Hasbro. They're good at vehicles and figures. |

And this movie doesn't exactly appeal to children. Concepts are waaaaaaay too big. A mass market line would fail miserably for something like this ala Avatar, The A-Team, etc.

I actually would like to see bandai america efforts in this kind of line, Hasbro would be ideal, but they haven't made many movie tie-in lines for licenses that they didn't already had.
