What is the absolute best ultraman as far as the story quality, the characters, and production values?

I'd be interested to see what someone who actually watched a lot of Ultraman has to say to this; only thing I can tell is that I often hear that Max and Nexus are highly praised among fans.
I only watched X and Orb but both are really, really good. So I wouldn't be surprised if people actually say one of those two is the best. As far as production value goes I think you have to say X / Orb, not only because they are newer, but the suit work, models and effects are amazing. Even the CGI is on point most of the time. |

My absolute favorite would be Nexus. It's literally nonstop action and plot progression, with a really epic story. But there are many other really great series too.
Nexus, Gaia, Ultraseven X, Mebius, and Zero related stuff (Mega Monster Battle + Never Ending Odyssey) get the 5-stars rating from me. For 4-stars, it would be Tiga, Dyna, Ginga S, X. (Sorry, while I think Ginga S and X are really great, they just went a little overboard with toy gimmicks) Last edited by xiiliea; 12-26-2016 at 08:27 AM.. |

Personally I love the last few seasons of Orb, X, Ginga S, and Ginga. Along with Nexus and The original series. Ultra Seven X was pretty intriguing. That's all I've seen but all are pretty great.
I'd lean heavily towards Orb right now but I loved that series a lot.

For me, I'm going for Orb. If you want to find an Ultra series that balances its filler and plot, Orb is your main companion. The runner-up will be Gaia, you won't see two Ultras dynamics like Gaia and Agul these days. The plot is as much as dark as Orb. The third will be Tiga. I like Nexus too but the plot got so messy after Ren appeared and the final episode was crammed everything in the last minute. Had Nexus gotten the same length as other Ultras, it would have been a very good Ultra series

I haven't seen every show myself, and I'm generally against saying something is the absolute "best", but I'm extremely tempted to say Mebius here.
It was a show that really understood the "heart" of Ultraman, and was clearly made with a lot of love and respect for the franchise, all while telling its own interesting stories with a really likable cast and quality fight scenes. Episodes like the one with 80 or the one where they go into Mirai's backstory stand out as completely amazing, and even beyond the individual plots there were solidly paced overarching plots and a strong sense of continuity that kept the show from feeling stagnant. It didn't just forget things happened as soon as the episode was over. Basically I have nothing I'd even begin to complain about with Mebius, and that's a good sign for it.

My favorite, as I'll always say to anyone who'll listen, is Max. But in regards to your categories:
Best story: I've fallen a bit behind on it, but I'd still probably say Orb. It has a really good story that centers around a really engaging main character. I think Nexus tried really hard, but it had a tendency to get stuck up its own ass sometimes, especially when it came to the main character's girlfriend. Best characters: Max, hands down. Every Ultra series has its core cast of the main hero and his support team, but of all the shows I've seen so far, Max did the best job of making them all feel really well developed and likable. Production values: Ginga. I really liked how everything was based around one abandoned high school and... nah, just kidding. Ginga seemingly had one of the lowest budgets of any modern tokusatsu series. This is a harder one to judge since the newer shows are obviously going to look better than the older ones, but I think for sheer quality of design in terms of sets, special effects, monsters, etc. I'd probably have to say Gaia. That was a really well put together series that looks incredibly damn good for the late 90s. |

My personal favourites are Ultraman, Ultraseven, Ultraman Gaia, and Ultraman Orb. For some reason these shows just kick so much ass I will watch them to the grave.

Basically, everyone posting in this thread is correct. Ultraman is just pretty great.
I'd rank the original show, Max and X as the bestest shows. I'm not good at ranking things though. |
