Wow, I'm surprised how little discussion this episode is getting, even outside the forum. Guess I'll go first. The first thing I noticed was how pretty it was, with a lot of scenes near the river on a bright day. Very vista. It's also a sweet story about guest of the week Yuna's regret of throwing away her customized doll. Flint gets half of the focus and some rare hero points, as she selflessly resolves to help the girl without expecting any reward. Magine gets the other half and honestly, I think this is her best focus episode since maybe her introduction. It really shows how she has become a lot more courageous and determined. I have to commend her resourcefulness, with how she deliberately got Yuna affected by Daikon Wald's power so the doll would come to her. Risky and extreme, but as expected from a chaotic person like Magine, it paid off and I'm impressed that she didn't even need to use magic other than her broom for transportation. I think it's very important to appreciate the value of sentimental attachment, so these two heroines doing so much to help this girl get a second chance was pretty inspiring.
Daikon Wald's power seems very contrived. I haven't seen the sub yet, but I get the feeling it's not going to shed much clarity on why daikons attract disposable items. It worked for the plot though and after Kaki Wald's homonym powers, it's way too late for me to start complaining about something like this. I'm keeping my disbelief suspended. Ironic how the guy who turns in to a dump truck gets stuck with all that trash. Poor Vroon. He always seems to get the bad luck when it comes to Walds. The Magiranger Gear had an unexpected effect as well. Anyway, that just leaves Gokaiger and Kyoryuger. I'm starting to wonder if the show is intentionally saving the most financially successful for last, cause it seems weird that they haven't been used yet. But maybe the staff are hoping they will increase the merchandise sales in Q4. Does that sound plausible?

Dang it! I was hoping I'd finally get to do that All Magine post, but then Zenkaiger just *has* to go and make her next spotlight episode have a wonderful variety of material for several other characters while it's at it, and now I feel obligated to talk about that stuff too. The audacity of this series. As always, it's even in the littlest things. While this one isn't focused on the ongoing plot at all, I appreciate it making time to check on it through both reminding us that everyone is still looking for Kaito's mom too, and even more than that, I appreciated Stacey's role here. Just that little scene of him proudly proclaiming to Barashitara that him and Hakaiser are buddies only to have Barashitara immediately spin that into a cutting remark... like, man, you can really feel there exactly why change doesn't come easy to Stacey. Even when he's trying something new, life at home is still as rough as always. I also thought Vroom was pretty great here! There's not a ton he gets to do, but his reactions to everything he's being put through are consistently priceless, building up to yet another fantastic spin on the roll call, because Zenkaiger is never out of creative ideas on how to make that part of the fun. For a second I honestly thought it'd just be a four-person job this week! They tricked me real good! And then of course, there's the actual meat of the plot, an extremely straightforward and heartwarming, really traditional kinda hero toku story, in that it's just about helping out a child with some mundane problem. It's pretty well done in this particular case, I thought. The emotions at the core of it are definitely super relatable, and that's always the make-or-break factor for this sort of episode. It's all about what it feels like to have some silly little thing that genuinely means a lot to you, and that probably is something pretty much anybody can empathize with on some level. It makes for a great episode for Flint, of course. I forget how much I've mentioned this before, but I've really come around to her character over time, and a huge part of that is how the show started putting a lot of focus on her being this almost inexplicably gifted gadgeteer who clearly has a real passion for creating things. As you'd expect then, I found her role in this one to be a natural fit. Again, this is a very feel-good kind of story, so it was nice seeing her bonding with someone over the attachment you feel towards something you make yourself. It's also a great episode for Magine!!! I'm still kicking myself for taking this long to mention that, but please consider it as me saving the best part of the episode for last. I'm not sure how much I can even put it in words, so hopefully a lot of it goes without saying. I mean, it's her being proactive that makes most of the plot happen, and this isn't even the first time she's spent an episode selflessly looking out for kids in need of help. It's hard to think of an episode where Magine isn't great, because those don't exist, but still, this was a great episode for Magine! (Also, while she's still the best part, I lied about saving Magine for last, because I definitely want to mention how neat I found the Magic Dial Fighter showing up in the robot fight. I always loved the goofy flair a simple snap of the fingers brought to LuPat's mecha scenes once it debuted, and in retrospect, its wacky powers almost seem like Koumura warming up for how she writes Zenkaiger, so outright putting it in this show feels appropriate.)

Magine said it best. "What a random power, that's magic for you!"
The only disappointment I could possibly say is that Magine could have used the Magiranger gear since it's the team she's based on, but that's just nitpicking, and what they did with it was brilliant. Who powers up the grunts so that they can rest in peace? This whole episode was magnificent, and I can confidently say is one of the best episodes of the season. I never knew Kabuki Radish monster would be something I would enjoy so much, from his design being absolutely nuts and the fact that their power not only did have the potential to give the bad guys a big win, but it even helped out our victim-of-the-week (if that's what you want to call her), Yuna. Not only that, we got to see Magine and Flint take center stage, even getting a glimpse of Pirate World. And of course, the glorious role call, which I knew was coming, and yet I still laughed at seeing Vroom buried in trash knowing when to tune in, with even them acknowledging that he's with them in spirit. Seriously, I can confidently say Zenkaiger is one of my favorite shows of all time, I just can't bring myself to be disappointed with it, even with every missed opportunities, it still manages to be an enjoyable show that I can't help but smile to all the way. Next Episode: It's a Family Reunion featuring the best Pirate ever (so it would seem)! |
