I was wondering why Gaon was making all vegetarian sushi, but thinking about how much he loves organic creatures, it actually makes a lot of sense that he wouldn't be a big fan of meat
Also, I'm glad they used the message that thinking about yourself isn't inherently selfish. Too many hero series hammer in the idea that if you have a single inkling of bettering your own life over your hero duties, you're just as bad as the villains.

I loved that moment too, and it was also a dead giveaway of Junko Komura's writing to me. I don't know how many also followed the show she was lead writer on last season, Healin' Good Precure, but an important part of it involved a scenario where its protagonist was shown as not being selfish by choosing to put her own personal health first. All of her friends supported her decision, too. I'm glad to see her continue these themes, it feels like a compassionate way for a narrative to to treat its heroes.

Yep, don't sacrifice your own personal wellbeing for the sake of others, it doesn't do yourself any favors and makes you unhappy on the inside. I healthy balance is needed.
Is it just me, or does this show love shilling their own DX toys. |

Oh, the male Kikainoid rangers all sleep on Kaito's floor. That's adorable.
Another week, another crazy MotW gimmick. I'm pretty sure we've had "Rangers stuck together" before. These gear powers are getting really weird. The Kyuranger gear gives Kaito really convoluted good luck And for once the show explains the Japanese cultural reference itself. They actually did a special transformation sequence for Zenkaizer and Gaon stuck together. That's amazing. Some good silly fight coreography too. ...Are those just the DX toys of the mecha? And the Ryusoulger gear gives Kaito a Ryusoulken, that's neat. Now I want some sushi... |

So now VrooMagine can execute a "Kikai! Super Zenkai Time!" without Zenkaizer in the cockpit. Seriously, why doesn't he just do the Gattais and then sit out the mecha fights if he can do all that stuff remotely?
Sucks to hear that Juran got separated from his folks and that it's such a common problem for Kikainoids. But that means the team have a common cause as well. Juran's gives a lot of wisdom to Kaito here and the courage to keep moving forward despite the problems they face. Finally, more than one Gear used in this episode. Interesting how both Zenkaiger and Dino Fury use luck as a plot device in the same weekend and one of the Gears was Dino Fury's Sentai counterpart! The use of the Kyuranger Gear might even be symbolic since Juran telling Kaito not to bear the burden on his own is pretty much the same thing Champ told Stinger. The difference is that Kaito is more willing to heed that advice. P.S. I watched Over-Time's April Fools sub for Episode 4. Humorous.

Now this is what I like to see, right here – two dudes sharing an emotional conversation while cosplaying as food. It really doesn't get much more Sentai than making that kind of contrast feel totally natural. As the inaugural first "normal" episode now that the team is assembled, this sets a great standard for the show to come. It's especially appreciated how much it slows down for those more dramatic and heartfelt moments. (Which is something that seems to be a specialty of the director, Satoshi Morota?) It still keeps the usual momentum up everywhere else, but the time spent exploring the characters more thoroughly is very much appreciated. They don't make a wacky joke out of Kaito's obvious distress at having the issue of his missing parents kicked up, and the result is an episode that made me feel like I know Kaito way better now. If nothing else, him and Zyuran certainly became a lot closer this time, didn't they? ... See, I slid right back into making wacky jokes there, which is something the episode does, too, only probably way better. Like, don't get the impression I'm saying this is some seismic shift into melodrama for Zenkaiger or anything. The usual whimsical humor is still here in full force, and it's great. From sight gags as minor as Gaon cuddling stuffed animals while he sleeps, to an entire elaborate sequence paying tribute to the immortal words よっしゃラッキー! The episode has still got you more than covered on that front. And even though I just said they didn't make a wacky joke out of Kaito's distress, I think my favorite wacky joke was him making a staircase out of Zyuran and Gaon to pointlessly jump into thin air assuming it's some kind of secret portal. I'm telling you guys, irresponsibly earnest. It's a trait the show seems to be outright praising here, with a moral that's twisted enough to give Kiramager a run for its money. Have to make a difficult choice between your own needs and the greater good? Why not pick both! As a message, it's got a similar sort of reckless punk energy to last year's show, and yeah, it's definitely nice that the show doesn't go out of its way to chastise Kaito for having an entirely human reaction to something. He got way too focused on his parents, and that wasn't good, but it also wasn't wrong. Just a real nice angle for the episode to take on a common superhero dilemma. In general, this episode was a pretty great twist on the usual "stuck together" plot that's one of the many Sentai standbys you see every couple of years or so. Zyuran and Kaito have fantastic chemistry throughout, to the point that a callback to a first episode that wasn't even that long ago feels like a totally earned, almost nostalgic moment. Again, I think always keeping in mind the finer points of the dynamics between her protagonists is something Koumura excels at as a writer, and this episode very much gives the impression that Zyuran not only has a particular respect for Kaito, but, as Kaito points out, is the most mature member of the team, no matter how much he pretends to be the cool party guy who's totally "with it". But then, why can't he just be both, right? So yeah, fantastic episode in my opinion. 3 is still the one to top in my (glaringly biased) heart, but this is probably the show's most solid outing yet.

Oh, on the subject of "choosing both" that everyone's talking about, there was a bit of nuance that I really appreciated that made the message even better than it already was, and that was that Kaito chose to focus on beating the Sushi World right away while keeping finding his parents as a long-term goal. On top of the message that it's okay to care about your own needs, it also sends the message that prioritizing something urgent right now doesn't mean you have to give up on everything else.

That "geta" gag got a real solid chuckle out of me. Those cutaways in the fights are so charming.

Cute episode that really makes it why the Zenkaigers should be a team. Kaito can't go soloing his issues about his parents, since he has his friends! Also, cuz he'd look even more like a Kamen Rider like that...
My small issue is that the three didn't really do much to do anything their own other than luring Sushi World out. The latter was still beaten by Kaito and Juran by themselves. Would've been neat what the three could do without, basically, the two leaders. But I guess that's for another EP? |
