I feel like something about Faiz that isn't pointed out nearly enough is that it's a show about emotionally damaged people. Nearly every single main character has some kind of traumatic backstory that directly explains their usual decision making process.
I can absolutely sympathize with people who find the melodrama too much (or too cheap), but I've never viewed Faiz's characterization as being particularly arbitrary. The guy who transforms using a cell phone has communication issues. That kind of irony can't be accidental. I really don't understand why so many of the Heisei Riders are honestly just dumb. Rider #1 Hongo had like a 600 level IQ and was still "cool", "brooding", "stoic", "tough",..etc. Riders v1,v2,v3, Black, ZO, J, Shin,..none of them were dumbasses. Then I watch Kuuga, Agito, Ryuki, Faiz, W, OOO's,...and I just don't understand why all the Main Heisei Riders are so goofy and stupid. I mean I like the shows and I like the costumes and the higher visual quality (compared to Showa era), but with the exception of Build (Sento is smart), I don't understand why so many Heisei Riders are just goofy and simple-minded. I love the look and quality of the Heisei shows, but I seem to like the actual Riders (when they're not in costume) a lot more in the Showa era because they just act like 'Guys',..not 'Simpletons.' Though I admit Kuuga, Agito, Ryuki,W,..they weren't unlikable characters,..but they were definitely simpleminded compared to someone like Hongo. Hopefully Gaim, Ex-Aid, Blade, Drive,..some of the other Heisei shows I haven't seen yet don't all continue this trend of goofy simpletons as Riders. I think it was episode 15 or 16 last night watching Faiz I was like, "Why would you not just TELL THEM HE'S LYING!?" ....sometimes I get too caught up in these shows. Yeah, that's what I meant. Communication issues are way too obvious in Faiz, intentional or not.
As to why heroes have changed... I suppose it's due to how we changed as a society and how we view heroes differently today. Back then heroes needed to be perfect, nowadays they make them more relatable by giving them simple flaws that we can identify with. Being a bit lazy, simple-minded or naive is okay as long as you do the right thing and don't hurt anyone basically. |

ok a few more episodes and I'm starting to see why people get annoyed with Fiaz. It's one thing to be stoic, it's another thing to be sort of dumb and uncommunicative. He needs to tell them that 'purple rider #2' is a bad guy who's scheming. But he's not saying anything to anyone.

Of course, if you think characters like Shouichi or Shinji are bad, try watching a modern Sentai sometime and see what the Reds are usually like. |

I have some Sentais (Showa and Heisei), saved on a drive but I haven't watched them yet. I've seen Captain Marvelous in the Sentai VS Rider movie but that's about it.
Still trying to make my way to Sentai and Garo but there's so much Kamen Rider and Ultraman to watch first. ..and Godzilla of course. (though I've seen all those movies a few times at this point.) |

In unrelated news, I just watched the Brave and Snipe specials from Ex-Aid. I liked the Snipe one, for the most part; it was a good fleshing out of his backstory from the show and a great reminder of just how evil Kuroto really was before he became a living meme factory. I felt that the ending was a bit of a letdown, though, being mostly made up of clips from Ex-Aid (and I have no idea where the Snipe vs. Genm fight is supposed to fit in chronology). The Brave special was... certainly a thing that happened. Seeing Asakura again was great and it was surprising to see so much focus on Hiiro's nurses (even though I think this came out after they'd already disappeared from the show). But the whole thing just felt really weird, likely because it apparently was a tie-in to last year's SHT (an acronym I am just now realizing could be easily/justifiably pronounced "shit"). Also, Night of Safari is easily the worst looking thing Ex-Aid ever shoved onto a suit actor and that show set a high bar for terrible costumes. God damn, was Asakura great, though. Super-1, Episode 17:
Another great example of why I love this show: Episodes like these really are like short martial arts movies with the bonus of a few Rider-fights in between. Generally cool stuff. This time we also get traditional Japanese swordsmanship in the mix which is great. I really dig the martial arts-theme of this show, it really meshes well with the Rider-formula. At the same time, I'm quite sad that the astronaut-theme has been completely dropped after the debut episode. Super-1 is built for space exploration, but so far nothing really revolved around that. I'm afraid it will never be a thing again, although if they do shoot him up into space to destroy Dogma's moonbase in the finale or something then I will cherish this show forever. I'm also quite surprised how fleshed out the monsters in this show are, so far we have quite a few baddies who flat-out betray or simply fail Dogma so badly that their life is on the line. Also, honorable mention to Kazuya remembering that his Radar Hands are a thing for two episodes in a row now. He kinda forgot he had him for quite a while. |

that's the impression I got. I'm looking forward to it. Glad you confirmed it.
Problem is whenever I carve out time to watch I almost always watch Godzilla or Kamen Rider. Even Ultraman I still have a bunch I need to see, (like Orb.) *sigh* ..It's like this whole 'Work' thing keeps taking up time. Hahahaha |
