I’m not surprised that people find Ghost hollow. His name gives it away: he isn’t all there to begin with.

Those flaws came off very ill-defined to me. He didn't struggle with them, they simply were a behavioral quirk that popped up occasionally. He never overcame them. When he moped, he just moped until an Eyecon popped up.
Anyway, I've probably dragged this out long enough as it is. I've already said all this stuff so much before it's nothing new. Maybe KyoryuGreen can take over ranting about Ghost for a while or something. I may be pretty stubborn about it but more power to you if Ghost just wasn't your thing. An amazing series with the most well-developed protagonist in Rider history. *clap clap clap*

Kotaro Minami and Takeshi Hongo are gods and those Heisei pretty boys aren't fit to lick their boots.

I really loved Ghost. Maybe it's because I haven't seen too many Kamen Rider series, but every single Tokusatsu series has an area where it could improve, and most of them are simply due to the nature of the series. I thought the suit designs were great, Takeru was easy to put myself in his shoes, and I enjoyed the rest of the cast as well. Onari is often criticized for being annoying, but I thought he was funny. In fact, most of my friends that I've shown Ghost to all really enjoy Onari.
The collectible gimmick in Ghost is probably my favorite, as well. The entire first 10 episodes were exciting - Takeru was basically on a quest to gather the dragon balls! The big difference is each one that he collects gives him new powers. It was an exciting race against time trying to collect everything, and Specter raised the stakes even higher. Now, I admit that after the first wish, the series slowed down like crazy, but once it started focusing on Alain's struggle it picked right back up. Which brings me to Alain - I think he's my favorite character I've seen in Kamen Rider so far. His motivations and struggles are all very believable to me, and the takoyaki thing was a funny little quirk that I could latch onto. I watch Kamen Rider for action, cool suits, and just fun characters. Somebody tried convincing me that tokusatsu isn't good if it isn't a feels trip, and I said no. I want good action, cool suits, and fun characters - all three of which Ghost has. It's not perfect - the pacing is really weird and Specter becomes kind of boring for most of the middle of the series, but those are things that I can forgive. If those things bothered me, I wouldn't be able to watch the vast majority of tokusatsu. So much of it has characters I find boring, and weird pacing issues. Especially Super Sentai. None of it seems to want to go too deep into plot developments, character studies, or a number of other things. They just keep it simple enough for children to understand and enjoy. Which is fine, but I honestly think people forget that sometimes when they criticize a show like Ghost. Note: I just kind of puked out ideas onto this post, so if anything is inconsistent or whatnot, I apologize. Don't read too much into it.

See, that's more of that oversimplification that really frustrates me when I see people complain about Ghost. You're implying he just got over his issues out of nowhere but pretty much every time it happened it was his friends or the Heroes pushing him along that got him back on his feet. Most character development in Ghost worked externally like that and I've always felt that was one of its best qualities. The show was always talking about how important connections with others were, and it backed that up throughout by having a main character who, for a large chunk of the series, is hugely reliant on the people close to him to actually get things done. His flaw is that he's immature. He's unsure of himself and occasionally irrational. Note that he dies on 18th birthday. He's meant to be someone who despite being on the cusp of adulthood is still very much a child. Hopefully that description is a little less ill-defined.
If the point is that it's easy when his friends are helping him, then... cool, I guess? Nice Aesop to carry an episode or two, but not a whole series.

I think part of our disagreement here might be semantic, thinking about it. When I talk about how Ghost was all about cherishing life, it goes beyond just the stuff about death. One of your suggestions was having a villain that literally hates life, but a huge crux of the Ganma was their distaste for individuality, while the show was always preaching the exact opposite, for example. I'm not implying that he got over them randomly, just that they became irrelevant and had no resolution.

*ahem*
Faiz is fantastic I could never *get* gaim I never found a reason to finish Kuuga I could use more Decade Fourze would have made more sense as a "Metal Hero" branding It should have been Kamen Rider Mach and Drive being the secondary Rider... They should just let Shocker die already...they have something awesome with Foundation X and use it to tie all the movies together |
